Johannesburg - Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz believes that Bafana Bafana will progress past the first round of the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The former Bafana Bafana coach also stated that the hosts will impress at the showpiece next year.

"There's only one way for South Africa and that is to improve and progress. Carlos Alberto Parreira is a world-class coach who has won the World Cup. I have worked here before and have seen the current team play. There is potential," Queiroz told reporters.

"With the support of the home fans, Bafana Bafana can impress. This is a specific competition where the hosts always do well and with a good manager and the fans, everything could go their way."

i agree with you about rugby fans not being patrotic. all the rugby fans have been nothing but nasty towards our football and seem not to want the SWC here. maybe because they cant stand the fact that Football is a better support sport and more of a skillful sport or maybe because they associate it with a race, I for one find it weird they say they love their county but have been totally ugly to bafana.
Bas12/7/2009 3:26 PM
mhlubuki you are such an idiot, don't think i've ever seen such a stupid comment like that in my life. Lets give Mr Parreira a chance and the supporters to get behind our boys on home soil and i'm sure we can cause a few upsets...
Paul12/7/2009 2:51 PM
Watch the movie INVICTUS and you will see how a sad, pathetic, disgrace of a team - with no chance in hell... beat a world super power in the opening game of a world cup on home soil - and then with momentum and an enigma of a leader... went all the way. Black South Africa backed the boks... it's sad to read the trash from some contributors on this site. I am South African, I am white and proud of both facts... I will be supporting Bafana to the very end!
Scaramouche12/7/2009 2:30 PM
Hei MHLUBUKI, hold on a moment with those generalisations! I am an avid sportsfan (including the Springboks and SA cricket teams) and have not hesitation to say that I will lose my voice next year when cheering on Bafana Bafana (as I have always done). I am sorry if your view of supporters of other sports codes are limitted to what they support, but don't judge all due to your unhappiness with some! In addition, I am not gay (my wife can confirm that), but I find your homophobic comment not only very offensive but also completely unrelated to the article that your commenting on. I would much rather us having a beer together while cheering on OUR team than to have this conversation...

Bafana is gonna make the last 16, there is no way that South Africans can let us down now, most of them will be looking at contracts in europe so, you will see Khune/Josephs, Gaxa, Modise, Mphela shine this coming world cup, so we don't even have to motivate them they are already motivated.
Expat12/7/2009 2:14 PM
Hahaha! You South Africans are so pathetic in your desperation to prove that your primitve barbaric banana republic doesn't suck at everything. Sorry folks. Ain't gonna happen. Those bright yellow bafunny-banana jerseys should have banana and clown logos on them. (And maybe a couple of dead bulls too. Killed bare handedly. But ofcourse)
hertz7812/7/2009 1:28 PM
Guys guys guys...come on! Lets support South Africa here, the country that educated us, the country that gives us a job, medical and everything else. Lets back Bafana, regardless what their world ranking are, but on the grounds that they travel with the same passport that we all travel on. Lets support South African sports, including netball, hockey, swimming and all the rest!
Rob12/7/2009 1:12 PM
the pessimists will be the first ones celebrating a victory. Low lives..
Jo12/7/2009 1:06 PM
I truly hope with all my heart that Bafana beats Mexico in that opening match - this is not beyond the realms of possibility! See the support swell then! Maybe then the pessimistic South African fans will give them a chance and get behind them!
Andrew12/7/2009 1:05 PM
I cannot wait for World Cup. I am very confident that Bafana are going to surprise MANY. Lets get to the quarter finals boys.. and maybe even further! I hope Africa shows everyone how talented are continent is. I am rooting for Africa!!

DREAM ON.....!!!!!!
Menezi12/7/2009 12:19 PM
The lawn and the fans is ours, so why Bafana can't make it and Pareira is gonna make us proud!!!!
Black12/7/2009 12:08 PM
@ Shaun – I have to congratulate you on your response to Mhlubuki, you are a perfect idiot. This is not a political platform for Terre’Blanche it’s about soccer – only gay stupid people like yourself always find political views where the is no need to. Maxelele Mhlubuki – By the way Shaun that means you are an idiot.
Menezi12/7/2009 11:58 AM

PASSION: It is time for all South Africans to show their love for the country by supporting Bafana Bafana, wear Bafana Bafana jersey on Fridays, be more proudly South African, play vuvuzelas in many occassions, create and play songs by vuvuzelas.
Gunnar Strom12/7/2009 11:33 AM
It's very simple. Only pay them if they win! Not too much for the first win, but increase it 25% for each win! Gunnar
Malcolm12/7/2009 11:18 AM
I think its time we get behind Bafana. Yes they're in a tough group and they face an uphill task against Mexico, Uruguay and France, but with millions of South Africans behind them and especially in the stands to cheer them on, they can do better than expected. They did well enough in the Confederations Cup to suggest they can improve and not merely make up the numbers at the World Cup.
Michael12/7/2009 10:40 AM
I respect his confidence, however, it will not help. Banana, Banana will get no points and will therfore be stone last. These damn vuvuzelas will hopefully then die down completely
Cape Bafana12/7/2009 10:39 AM
Let us start by giving bafana bafana R2 million apearance fee and R 250 000.00 performance fee for every game they win then they will progress rto the next level.
@John12/7/2009 10:18 AM
I think you are embarishing yourself John. What kind of spelling is that???
Sox12/7/2009 10:13 AM
Bafana must i say must beat Mexico no draw if they lose their first game their morale will be low, so for once Bafana Banana make us proud we still support you anyway but you all know no one backs a loser that's reality of life, go Bafana!
Metla212/7/2009 10:06 AM
Nothing is impossible, its just that it has never been done before. Bafana players and the country at large should instill that belief in their minds. The previous Bafana teams have not progressed past the first round before. That does not mean its impossible to progress. Stop the negativity.
Mr Whaks12/7/2009 10:04 AM
Mr. Queiroz thanks for vote of confidence. As we can see on this list, there is not a lot of confidence. As South African's I can't believe that we do not support our own team. I know Bafana Bafana have not have not performed, but we must be positive and believe that they can progress to the second and even to the final!!!!! Come on South Africa let's stand behind our team.
elton12/7/2009 10:01 AM
@ Mahlomula...I am not a cricket or rugby fan but face facts my friend....they need Internationaly based players and not only black people can play ball....the best players in the world are not black if you have not noticed....infact most of them come from Brazil and they are colored.
Manota12/7/2009 9:59 AM
Bafana will make us proud in the field of play and the least we could do is to make them proud by filling in those stadiums, fan parks, shebeens, tarvens, local spazas, tv rooms, lift our flags high, paste Bafana posters everywhere and FLOW THOSE VUVUS non stop.
realistic12/7/2009 9:58 AM
This optimism is great, but lets be real Mexico will play their hearts out. Let us hope the noise of the Vuvuzelas will get the better of them. I guess that is the divine intervention Mahlomula is talking about. Ku World Cup, kuyadlalwa akudlalwa !!
Goblin12/7/2009 9:58 AM
The important thing is to stay positive about Bafana Bafana's chances. I wish them well in a tough group and they will yet suprise us :) With good home support, we will do well.
Lets Get Behind Bafana12/7/2009 9:58 AM
Now the time to get behind Bafana. We know we are not as good as we would like to be - maybe this can be the start of brighter and more successful South Africa.
shaun12/7/2009 9:54 AM
@MHLUBUKI. You are a moron. Rugby/Cricket fans are gay? You are a prize idiot ,and the reason why our soccer is such a mess. Lets rather knock the successful sporting codes in our country, than look for ways of fixing our national soccer team?? Bafana Bafana are a disgrace because our soccer is run on the same self-serving lines that our govt is run. Best we focus on trying to save ourselves the humiliation that will come around in June, than attack sporting codes that have already proved themselves. Numbskull.
Thembalabantubonke12/7/2009 9:48 AM
What fascinates me is not that some people express their views, but the vitriol that accompanies their comments strikes me as bitter people who have nothing good to say about their country. I am realistic about our chances, but we do have two issues in our favour 1. Support from the fans and neutrals 2. Altitude 3. Preparation knowing we face all teams better than us. 4. Mexico play the same style of football we play which has seen us compete well with South American teams. If we can keep the score at 0-0 for about 1 hour, then I think we have a better chance of winning. conceding an early goal will be what Mexico will target.
@mhlubuki12/7/2009 9:46 AM
Wow.. mature comments. See that chip on your shoulder is getting bigger each day. Must be tiring.
cj12/7/2009 9:46 AM
John and Jack sound like the same person, both are complete idiots. Any person who can't wait to see his national team being embarrased should leave the country immediately. Mhlubuki, the overwhelming majority of South Africans, including the whiteys, are very firmly behind Bafana, I assure you.
james12/7/2009 9:37 AM
Has he wagered his house on it - I doubt it!
Waste of Time12/7/2009 9:29 AM
What a joke! Banana Banana wil probably go on strike a week before the tournaments starts. Carlos you are in Dreamland. Go Brazil, Go.
John12/7/2009 9:28 AM
Thank you for the vote of confidence. I still cannot wait to see Bafana Bafana embarish themselves in the first round!
MHLUBUKI12/7/2009 9:27 AM
That's the spirit Mr Queiroz. But it's gonna be difficult from the word go for us,Mexico is a difficult opposition and so are the rest of the opposition in our group. It's interesting that we have support and well wishes from foreigners when our own rugby and cricket fans have nothing but disrespect for us.The good news i have for these traitors is that WE DON'T NEED SUPPORT FROM THESE PESSIMISTIC RUGBY AND CRICKET SUPPORTERS, FOREIGNERS WILL SUPPORT US! MAINLY RUGBY AND CRICKET FANS ARE GAY ANYWAY.
Mahlomula12/7/2009 9:24 AM
Before the Confed Cup there were many people who were commenting negatively about Bafana Bafana's (BB) chances but in the end BB proved them wrong by reaching the semi-final. A mind troubled by doubt can not focus on the course of victory.I know BB have an uphill battle ahead of them but victory belongs to the most persevering. I have been looking at the World Cup match schedule and even if BB do progress to the second round they will have tough battles cause in the last 16 match they could either face Argentina or Nigeria. If they survive that, in the quartfinal they might meet either Spain, Brazil, Portugal or Ivory Coast. We need committed players, a miracle from Perreira and a divine intervention.
hand of god12/7/2009 9:05 AM
Thanks for your vote of confidence Carlos, but even the older Carlos, Bafana Bafan's coach, can't even get himself to make statements like that!!!
Jack12/7/2009 8:47 AM
Yea progress to the spectator stands for the rest of the tournament
