Private security for NZ at SWC

New Zealand - New Zealand has hired a private security firm to guard its players during this year's World Cup in South Africa, New Zealand Football told local media on Wednesday.

Chief executive Michael Glading told the New Zealand Herald his organisation had engaged a South African contractor whose firm had previously provided security within South Africa for the All Blacks and the Wellington Hurricanes rugby teams.

World Cup organisers have spent an estimated $220 million on security around the Cup and have assured competing teams that every step will be taken to ensure their safety at the tournament. Glading said New Zealand would be among a number of countries which had put in place additional arrangements.

"We have hired a South African to oversee our security," Glading said. "He will link with the security FIFA provide and liaise between them and the team.

"We have hired his company so we are not sure if he will be by himself or comes with an army, but he has a reputation as one of the best in the business," he added. "FIFA are encouraging countries to have their own security as well as what they provide."

New Zealand will be based near Johannesburg throughout the tournament and will fly to the venues of its pool matches against Slovakia, Paraguay and Italy.

Italy and Germany are among nations that have already indicated they will have private security throughout the Cup, and Australia has said it will use "some local resources."

Glading said the use of private contractors was prudent.

"Since the attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team (in Pakistan last year), all sporting teams have to be aware of their security," he said.

"It depends on where you go, but Africa would be one of the main danger areas. It's no great secret that South Africa is a country with a high crime rate so security will be important."

Glading said the New Zealand government might also send a small detachment of police to South Africa to assist in the protection of players, officials and their families.

Well, at least the security companies will make some money out of the SWC. Pity so few of us poor buggers who have to live in this country can't afford private security for ourselves!

HOOONESTLY PEOPLE! Of all things you can whine about, you want to make an issue of something that MOST LIKELY happens on a regular basis anyway. We whine and complain about our crime, now we whine and complain that people are cautious about our crime, and we assume that the article includes a full analysis of past practices of foreign teams to our country. And EVEN IF in the past they did not use security, this IS the Fifa world cup, and it doesn't matter if you're the worst team on the log, or an eager foreign supporter, if you're foreign, criminals are going to like running into you. Be realistic, WOULDN'T YOU want protection if you got sent to the DRC now for a pleasure visit? And what the hell is it with you assholes slating Bafana Bafana? YES they are in because they are a host nation, YES they have a pretty crap track record, but they're OUR BOYS and they could really use your support and encouragement. This is a GREAT opportunity for SA to stand united once again, and give your heart to your home team, no matter what their chances! If you can't handle being patriotic for the guys who actually play the games that carry our flags (most likely because you're a bigot, or holding a grudge because of the stupid politics in our sport) then go live in Orania or someplace foreign. Otherwise suckup your anger at the politics of our sports, and do what you can to encourage OUR TEAM, OUR BOYS! AND FOR CRYING OUT LOUD WOULD SOME OF YOU LEARN TO SPELL PROPERLY!!!!!!! "e&oe"

"especialy non white visitors, was also warned not to enter into ceratin areas. because of the risk of being attacked by NAZI's." HUH??? Rather watch out for the lions and tigers roaming the streets of our cities.
rbgguy @ Goalie1/27/2010 2:34 PM
Only because the played against a bunch of island teams to qualify. They would not make it in Africa.
@expat1/27/2010 12:57 PM
I'm glad to see that you do have hope that things go OK. However going the townships wont be such a bad thing. Infact Soweto has become a huge tourist atraction.Foreigners want to see and experience the township, they want to see what was living in townships was, basicaly they want to see what we had to deal with during apartheid. With regards to they safety, tourst have been adviced by their own gorvermants and tour operaters not to venture into townships on their own. FYI during Germany 2006 visitors, especialy non white visitors, was also warned not to enter into ceratin areas. because of the risk of being attacked by NAZI's.Same goes for other non crime areas.and lastly did you know that in Germany the created a area where people can get prostitutes, Now this was doen to prevent people from venturing into places where they would becaome victims of crime.
gloria1/27/2010 12:33 PM
Good shot and congrats to the All Blacks(soccer not rugby)for providing security so that they do not leave this country minus their cellphones and laptops. They will roam the streets free knowing that the private eye is watching and hopefully they will not wander off to brothels
Confed Cup1/27/2010 12:10 PM
on the positive note, hiring local security companies is one way of bringing money to South Africa, people wake if you dont capitalise on making money using crime you wont get a cent, i'm going rent out my appartment and promise the fans top class security to and from stadiums for an extra $1000 hows that for 2010
Petrus1/27/2010 12:09 PM
Suport the idea 100% SA is unsafe & the stats are their to prove it. Those that do not agree, take out the emotions & show the facts!
alan1/27/2010 12:07 PM
At least they can go home after 3 games unlike Bafunny Bafooney doomed to soccer wilderness after 3 games will never see another swc/afcon aa bbbeee ss hh ii tt

To all the idiots that state that the RSA is the worst place to live in. yes we have the highest crime rate when it comes to gun related crimes. Crime is bad especially when you are effected by it. However stop punting RSA worst place to live in because RSA is place to live in .Check out this website http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_tot_cri_percap-crime-total-crimes-per-capita then you see that When it comes to all types of crimes we rank 7th in the world behind countries such as the UK and America, France , Germany. What’s more interesting is the fact when you look at rate of crime per every 1000 people guess who is in second place, New F@#$%^N Zealand. All non believers watch a programme called Crime in NZ which plays on the crime channel on DSTV.
Cas1/27/2010 11:25 AM
On a positive note its, Good for the guy who got the contract at least he is from RSA. On the flip side I hope nothing really happens to them only because these idiots will not blame him but they will blame the black government instead of they white brother. They will even blame the black security guards.

Do some people here even read the article before they comment? It says "a South African contractor whose firm had previously provided security within South Africa for the All Blacks and the Wellington Hurricanes rugby teams". I am not aware that NZers have any illusion about the fact that this is 3 games then the plane home, and I don't doubt that FIFA will be looking to review the format that allowed NZ such a 'soft' ride to the finals. But I did notice NZ was ranked above Bafana Bafana and North Korea! And I have a vague memory of reading that the Egypt and Brazil teams both lost most of their stuff in hotel robberies during the Confed Cup - maybe not crime of the century, but with only 8 participating teams, a 25% strike rate does not look that good to me. Last time I checked the bookies here they were paying $1.70 for NZ to score a single World Cup goal and $0.67 for none. I did not check for > 1! That would be silly.
jhet1/27/2010 11:13 AM
you just hate NZ, you sad stupid a$$holes... How safe is SA when a girl is raped and hanged or torchered? should I tell you again how many people are killed in SA every day? oh yes do not forget that there was a bloody f**ken threat on TV from criminals? One more thing, this event is bigger than the olympics (that is when all the world counties come together) the swc (only 30 something countries) attracts more tourist and more tourist mean the chances increases for someone to get killed (god forbid) so really do not try to bring the rwc or cwc in this, they have nothing on this event!
Tiego1/27/2010 10:43 AM
I want my that job because i will be not doing nothing the only problem it will last three games if they are here for holiday its ok.
Gustav1/27/2010 10:36 AM
"a South African contractor whose firm had previously provided security within South Africa for the All Blacks and the Wellington Hurricanes rugby teams." I guess this quote means that the all blacks did hire a contractor to protect them. Yet we moan everyday about the crime, but some of us judge teams when they are taking extra measures to protect their lives.
Goalie1/27/2010 10:35 AM
Don't knock the Kiwis folks - they got into the SWC by MERIT and not by DEFAULT (a 'la Banana Banana). They deserve to be here and if they get knocked out early, well, that's sport....
Sox1/27/2010 10:28 AM
Who care's! they can hire SWAT if they like we dont give a rat a$$ what they do, they must be forced to play most of their matches in Angola.
fern @ Expat1/27/2010 10:28 AM
LOL you have no clue. Don't comment if you aren't here anymore.
Hilarious1/27/2010 10:21 AM
Good on the security contractor. Quick profit for less than 2 weeks work! LMAO
SA FAN1/27/2010 9:59 AM
hahahahaha this is so funnny, ignorant asses, they play Super 14 and Tri-Nations every year in SA... anyway it will be a short contract.
clinton1/27/2010 9:58 AM
over the years we have hosted The Rugby World Cup,CAF Cup,Confed Cup The IPL, Cricket World Cup and numerous international conferences...please tell me because i must be be stupid i dont recall a single serious incedent!!!
AJ1/27/2010 9:51 AM
Most visiting teams will err on the side of caution.
Lucy1/27/2010 9:49 AM
Kube$: Maybe it's because they are mostly ALL WHITE that they need extra security!!!!
rbgguy1/27/2010 9:43 AM
This is so lame. Lame and New Zealand go along hand in hand. Don't worry fools. You'll be knocked out in the first round and then you can leave our shores quick quick
Len van Heerden1/27/2010 9:42 AM
@Expat No SWC came will be played in a township. Soccer City is not in Soweto and none of the other stadiums are in a township. I have no problem teams using local security companies (often, robberies are undertaken by security linked people anyway). I doubt if the SA government will give authorisation to anyone outside to carry arms as a security in the country and so, statements being made do not necessarily carry weight. Again, have no problem with teams adding to security, however, I wonder if New Zealand should be concerntrating more on football as they are likely to be wht whipping boys of their group. If they score one goal, it will be an achievement. New Zealand Rugby attracts more interest because unlike their soccer brothers, they can play rugby, which is not something New Zealand can be accused of being capable of doing. Let them bring the army, but chances are that their party will last less than 2 weeks
me1/27/2010 9:40 AM
Very good point, expat. Didnt even think of that. Guess I got so naive with Rugby and cricket games. Hopefully those 2 sports can also transform to that subpar level very soon.
Kube$1/27/2010 9:33 AM
Joke of the year, who the f*&K is gonna attack the All Whites, gimme a break, they going home in the first week, gees like....
lungisa in PE1/27/2010 9:21 AM
NZ is going no where they wont even attract crowd they definately wont be center of attraction even criminals wont even be interested in robbing them....but they brilliant because all this hiring an army of secury pessonel is just to try and fill their group games after that they gone.
Matt1/27/2010 9:06 AM
Have people gone mad?? This is plain thick and all those south africans who think so are thick too.
Expat1/27/2010 9:04 AM
Remember the Cricket & Rugby World Cup Finals in SA were not played in SOWETO or other townships. Thats the difference! Most people coming over think the transport system is the same for Europe or any other 1st World Country, they are in for a surprise. You wouldnt find rugby or cricket supporters going to the places that the soccer fans are having to go too. I just hope that the Police force is up to the challenge. Here's hoping to a great World Cup & that Bafana play above themselves and get into the next round.
Bert1/27/2010 9:02 AM
Thank God the world is aware of the crime statistics in South Africa and are taking preventative measures for the SWC. If only the South African government and SA police would now emerge out of their daily state of denial and do something more for the citizens of SA than talking and finger wagging and pretending that all is well some of the time. I hope the SA hirachy is a little anoyed and embarrased as SWC contenders organise their own security. My advice. Be careful, be VERY careful.
Kiwibok1/27/2010 8:58 AM
Typical, already specimistic. Now what do you think will happen to BB (not blue bulls). They were lucky to be in to SWC, no need to qualify as they are the hosts. They dont deserve to be there. At least the All Whites (hehehe - no polictical issue over the name yet) are there om merit.
Mfana41/27/2010 8:58 AM
@Only 3 games-I quote you,"Wonder whether you had a need for pvt security... for your All Blacks team, " THE ARTICLE SAYS "..had previously provided security within South Africa for the All Blacks and the Wellington Hurricanes rugby teams." I'll say no more.
Marius1/27/2010 8:56 AM
Joke of the year. The only protection that the All Blacks,Hurricanes and other NZ S14 teams required in South Africa over the last few years, was a good supply of condoms.
DebMM1/27/2010 8:53 AM
Seriously!!! The All Blacks never seem/ed to have a problem. Really what makes this world cup different to any other we've held, apart from the fact it's soccer. Seriously?
Obvious1/27/2010 8:51 AM
I don't see their super14 teams with personal security, what's with the soccer?
Mfana41/27/2010 8:50 AM
Well who cares in anyway NZ will bomb out in the 1st round, this ain't rugby or by the way even the world cup rugby you only won it once and RSA has two trophies.
Only 3 games1/27/2010 8:49 AM
Well, we all know NZ are here only for the 3 matches they will play, but anyway, since they will be using local company, its all good for the country in terms of tax. Hire the whole army for all i care, you are a goner after three matches, maybe if it was rugby, it might have been in for a long haul. Wonder whether you had a need for pvt security when yu were here last for the Confed cup and also for your All Blacks team,
Meyer1/27/2010 8:44 AM
I understand the need to be safe but really, of all the teams at the World Cup, NZ really need not bother with extra security. They will be out by the first round so no need for tight security!
chris1/27/2010 8:36 AM
No problem with this ,Bafana gets escorted to where they go as well and it is not even SWC yet!
Joeman1/27/2010 8:30 AM
The All Whites were in SA for the Conf Cup and they never had any security problem. This make me wonder! Why are we being sabotaged in such fashion? The club world cup recently was held in the Emirates and no one raised any security concern despite being an arabic country.
Marcus Daily1/27/2010 8:26 AM
Stupid, what about the Rugby guys when they come here, they never have security okes looking after them. Anyway, who cares about New Zealand, they'll be back home in the first week!
Gerad Botha1/27/2010 8:23 AM
Good on you!!!! Now go show those Bafana Banana’s how it’s done!!!
awww1/27/2010 8:13 AM
let me guess all u south african's are going to be up in arms cos they got security... all cos sa has zero crime... bwhahah
citizen1/27/2010 8:12 AM
Would these security personnel please stay on to protect the already ravaged and savaged South African citizens!!! At least the international folk are not wearing dark glasses or rose tinted spectacles. The truth be told .....
US1/27/2010 8:08 AM
We need to be realistic and realise that the world knows that we have incredibily high crime levels. The only thing is, the ordinary SA citizen does not receive the protection that overseas players and visitors will be given.
Sandra1/27/2010 8:01 AM
It's the sensible thing to do.
