Parreira backs Aaron to lead

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has backed Aaron Mokoena to lead the hosts at next year's World Cup.

The Portsmouth man has been persistently criticised for his inconsistent form for the national team, prompting calls for him to be dropped from the squad.

Parreira, however, has leapt to Mokoena's defence, insisting the heavily-capped skipper remains an integral member of the Bafana cause.

"In every organisation there has to be hierarchy. The team needs support and experience and Aaron has it, having played more than 90 matches for his country. He would not have achieved all this if he did not have something special within him," Parreira told the Sowetan.

"We cannot play with a team made up of young and inexperienced players."

The Brazilian-born mentor added: "We believe in our own ability, in our own technique and we will claim our right to fight for a place in the second round."

Personally I dont think Aaron should be the captain. He really does not perform like a captain should, both for Bafana & Portsmouth. Unfortunately I cannot think of a suitable candidate now but Aaron is a definate NO for me.

Sjoe, I don't see why Aaron is still kept in the team .Walter Mokoena said it during the CONFED Cup let the coach and the Captain go then you will see results!

@anonymous: of those 7 years in england he has probably played less then a year worth of football. That is without being injured, but warming his @r$e on the bench. How the guy got his last 60 caps only these stupid Brazillians will be able to tell us, because to date we havent got nothing to show for it. His experience doesnt count for Sh!t on the big stage, because he cost us in the confed and prior to that. Benni and Pienaar show their class and difference when they come play for BB unlike this useless prick. Pick anyone but this useless fart. Portsmouth had to drop him to win. He plays midfield for that useless team let him compete against for that position in BB.

I always compare Aaron Mokoena to former president Mr. Nelson Mandela due to his dedication towards his work. People may say whatever they want to say about Aaron, but the fact remains He is the true leader who never backs down. You may ask Aaron's team mates (home and abroad). Aaron is a teacher, motivator, preacher.... Anyhow say whatever you wanna say about Aaron's.. but the fact remains Aaron Mokoena is the best!!!!!

There you go, confirmed we'll go out in the 1st round..What does this tell the aspiring defenders, consistent and talented players? That whatever they do will not be good enough as long as Mokoena is there? So i can play crap and still know i'll be in the team, as long as i have experience? Exprience is overrated sometimes.
kunsta12/7/2009 4:03 PM
He sucks big time, look at what he did in the english league.. tackling pienaar like that....NOT COOL
kunsta12/7/2009 4:00 PM
That guy is old& tird, with all the years his got playing oversees he should'nt be scared when confronted by strikers. Ooooooh the freekicks every time, penalties etc.. he bad news drop him now while we still hv a chance...His like Pierre Issa in France in 1998

The coach and Mbazo must go. Perreria is here for the money. He can fool eveybody but certainly not me. He publicly tipped Brazil to win the 2010 world cup. If I am wrong then it could be that the coach did not watch the Brazil Bafana game in the Confed. He can only put Mokoena in the team so that he is the one to give away goals and freekicks so that Brazil and other countries that are free of politics continue to be on top even when they do not deserve it. We almost beat Brazil in the confed, if we had a south african coach we could have done it. If you give Steve Komela this job of coaching Bafana Mbazo wont be in the camp for 2010 and Mabizela will be in the line up.
Dumisani Xulu12/7/2009 3:29 PM
Bring back Mabizela. What Mabizela has done outside the field of play is forgivable compared to the blunders that the current 'muti' captain has been doing in the field of play since joining Bafana Bafana - Bafana Bafana were winning before Mbazo was selected. You can ask Jomo he will tell you. Let's play the vidieos of all the games that Mbazo has played for Bafana you will see that he has a 5% good record and a 95% bad record. He is a blunderist, fumbler, cow and everything hated by a soccer fan. How many freekicks, corners, penalties etc. must he give away before he is dropped from Bafana. I can do better than him.

So we dont have a choice Parreira? Mokoena is nothing but a robot i can smell disaster woza 2010.
anonymous12/7/2009 3:25 PM
Spot on Parreira: Mokoena is one player who has distinguished himself with commitment and disciple to Bafana Bafana. He has played in the English Premier leauge for how long? 7 yrs? He has played for Bafana how many times? He is now captain of Postmouth. Only Lucas Radebe, Fish and Bartlet had had the hounor of captaining English sides. That should mean something about the player's capabilities. He is not the most technically gifted player in the world. However he has more than made up for that. thanks God a world cup winning coach recognises that.
Dave12/7/2009 3:25 PM
@mapale elias: What the heck are you trying to say?
German12/7/2009 3:21 PM
Oh hell no, please make Steven Pienaar captain. Bafana will fail dismally under Mokoena's leadership.
Dumisani Xulu12/7/2009 3:21 PM
As long as we have Mbazo in the team we must forget winning anything in the world cup. We are not football minos but politics make us look like we do not have talent. We played a fairly balanced game against Brazil in the confed and had we scored first we could have won the game. Mbazo is the one who gave away a free kick and Danny alves scored. Mbazo is the one who gave away a penalty agaist spain which was saved by Khune. Mbazo must stay away from football. I am now doubting the Parreria's capabilities if he sees anything good in Mokoena. Mbazo and the coach must go. Do we want to regret playing Mbazo after we lose against Mexico or do we want to the angry fans to ensure that Mbazo gets an English citizenship. Wake up and smell the coffie.

oh please. not aaron mokoena! i cant see what he is doing in the pitch. i think he is better as a spectator not a player for 2010. this si just to boos t his ego and for him to think he is the better. we've had captains but this one is the most non-performing i have evr seen in bafana bafana

Coach i support you, but when it comes to Mokoena you are wrong. 90 caps, under coches like Jomo and so forth, but you have better class, surely you can recognise a poor player?
Sello "Two-Two" Jelle12/7/2009 2:47 PM
There we go...loosing even before we start! Mokoena is the weakest link...he should be dropped. Mabizela will do the job far much better than him - forget his behaviour! We accepted Benni and we can also accept Mabizela. I do not condone his behavious off the pich - but certainly, I have lots of faith in his football skill! Let Parreira be guided properly and he should let go of Mokoena! Experiance is important and so is the right man for the job! Mbulelo is the right man for the job. There are many other defenders who do a bettr job than Mokoena - at least consider them - let them get a game or two and let us assess and be satisfied!
Sganja12/7/2009 2:30 PM
Stupid backing stupid.
mapale elias12/7/2009 2:29 PM

Russell Thomas12/7/2009 2:26 PM
Parreira will see his gat if he does not back Aaron. Selective spine by Parreira, this soccer is run from the inside and not the coaching team
anon12/7/2009 2:16 PM
Oh please. I'm surprised teachers pet Benni McCarthy wasn't made class captain.
