Parreira: Give Benni a chance

Cape Town - Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira is adamant the strike-partnership of Benni McCarthy and Katlego Mphela will come right – despite a second successive game without a goal.

Speaking after the goalless draw against Jamaica in Bloemfontein last night, Parreira said McCarthy’s fitness was one of the contributing factors.

“The problem with Benni is he is not getting enough game-time at his club, Blackburn Rovers, and isn't fit. But I have confidence Benni and Mphela will develop into a good partnership.”

However, Parreira insisted it can’t only be the strikers who are to blame, sating the midfielders should contribute as well.

“Our midfielders such as Teko Modise and Siphiwe Tshabalala, who are not at their best at present, need to start scoring and creating chances,” he said.

“Also we need to work more with our overlapping full-backs to get more crosses in and therefore more chances to score.”
