Parreira: Bafana will surprise

Durban - It will be a 100 days to go on Tuesday and Bafana Bafana head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira is confident of Bafana being the surprise package at the World Cup in June, despite injury concerns to key English-based players, Benni McCarthy and Kagisho Dikgacoi.

Speaking in Durban on Monday ahead of Wednesday night’s friendly against Namibia at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Parreira said the key to Bafana doing well in June lies with preparation and fitness.

“That is why our three camps in Brazil, Germany and at home in May are vital to prepare the squad. Three camps gives me time to prepare properly.

"This I have learnt through many World Cups.”

Parreira, who won the 1994 World Cup with Brazil, laughed off suggestions by the coaches of Uruguay, France and Mexico, that Bafana would be easy meat in the Group A clashes starting on June 11 when they host Mexico at Soccer City in the opening match of the finals.

“We want to be the surprise team of the World Cup. That is our target.

"And if the other coaches in our group believe we will be easy to beat, they are in for a big surprise. We will be ready for Mexico, France and Uruguay and if they underestimate, us they will be punished.”

Parreira said having 100 000 fans supporting Bafana in the opening Group A match against Mexico would be a major factor.

“One thing is for sure, Bafana are going to fight and in front of 100 000 home fans will not be easy to beat. “I have been to many World cups as a coach and observer where the pre-tournament favourites failed, and teams nobody gave a chance, did well.

"Football is unpredictable and that is why it is such an exciting game.”

Switching to the game against Namibia, the coach said he was not taking Namibia lightly. “It is decision time for me on certain players.

"I realise Namibia are not Brazil, but this is an important game and we must do well against them. We are also using it to celebrate an important milestone of 100 days to the World Cup kick-off.”

The 100 days to go will be celebrated with the arrival in Durban on Tuesday of Fifa president Sepp Blatter and top Fifa and Local Organising Committee officials.

“From now on the focus is on me as coach and the players. The Word Cup preparations start now in Durban against Namibia.

"We will do the country proud.”

Parreira said the major decisions he will take after Wednesday’s clash against Namibia will be on the two European based fullbacks, German based left back Bradley Carnell and Greek based right back Bryce Moon, who he has brought back after a long absence.

“We need cover for both fullback positions. I have watched Carnell at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and was impressed. He has lots of experience and is a good player, but is injury prone.”

On Moon Parreira said he wants to use this game to have a good look at him. Parreira is also waiting for doctors’ reports on the injuries to McCarthy and midfield anchor Dikgacoi. “I know only what I have read in the papers. If it means travelling to England to speak to the players and their doctors then I will. I need both players fit for the World Cup.

"It would be a massive blow if either or both are not available due to injury.”

Meanwhile Teko Modise who will captain the side against Namibia, appealed for support from the Durban fans.

“We enjoyed tremendous support when we beat Zimbabwe (3-0) at the same venue in January and hope we can rely on the fans to support us against Namibia and help is celebrate 100 days to go with a win.”

I want to agree with"Liraliwele" u guys are probably less intelligent South Africans or Africans, even Korea suprised everyone when they were hosting the world cup,it's 11 vs 11. besides Bafana proved that there is some hope during confed. what do u self proclaimed coaches suggest should be done then, shut up and wait for June 11

Not that it will take much to surprise anyone.... seeing that "everyone" expect them not to win even a single game. One thing that I am sure about is that those that are not used to africa will be surprised and thats not in a good way

You are all stupid idiots who have never even kicked a ball. Perreira's Bafana did beat Paraguay 3-0 in a friendly recently. If you don't know who Paraguay is, ask Brazil. You are so negative, you must all be sick and miserable! Most of you have no basic understanding of soccer and yet you dare berate a coach who took four teams to the World Cup. Bertyboots, what does England have to show since 1966!? It's been 18 years since our re-admission. England has been a member of FIFA for over 100 years! Good luck with your support for them.

@Eric: and where is jomo's team now. He is fallen away and is still living in the 90's. I was taken aback by the Winter Olympics and the effect it had on the people of Vancouver. We really had a chance to make this World Cup ours, but sadly, our team is not like the Canadian olympic team who finished top (And added to the mystic and charm of the olympics). Had SA been in better shape and world champ contenders (like Rugby,Cricket [chokers and all]), this world cup may have been the best ever; but instead we are insiders on the outside and can watch our colonial masters go away with the spoils....again.

Please don't make me laugh. Bafana must still learn to get the basics right. A simple pass with the ball to each other, is something they cannot do. My advice for a good sqaud is, to go the Cape Flats, offer those unemployed youngters R2500.00 a game and then we will have a winning team.

bring back Jomo. Parreira is smoking Durban zol. Khoza and Danny made Teko captain. At the end all these fat cats will make money and our poor will still suffer
Bet Your Possesions3/1/2010 7:45 PM
Bet your house or car or even a toaster that they will not score a single goal. Guys as you are making these stupid comments keep your soccer knowledge in mind. Bafana IS THE WEAKEST in thier Group. NOTHING to do with ANC or Trasnformation. Bafa will need a a miracle to beat France or Mexico or Uruguay, then come back and draw with one of them. No real shame in loosing this time around.
Bertyboots3/1/2010 7:44 PM
Well...I reckon it's simple, as a South African, I wish Bafana the best but thats about it... I'd be stupid to expect them to even score a single goal... I will choose a team that has a chance to win and will support them, like England, Brazil, Spain or Argentina etc... That wont make me unpatrioctic, simply realistic...

People, this man is sending you a message! In the same way that certain influential people including Blatter influenced the draw for the host nation, the very same people will influence the outcome of this event. One day after the world cup Danny Jordaan will reveal all.
bob3/1/2010 5:32 PM
Well said Spartan. One day when they decide to transform soccer the way that they have tried to transform every other sport, we may have a hope in hell of winning something. Firstly, GET RID of the STUPID name, and call them South Africa, not pissy little boys!

The surprise is that Bafana will be the first host nation tean not to make it beyond the first round.
nigel3/1/2010 5:23 PM
If Bafana surprises, it will be despite SAFA's constant bungling, govt. interference & general incompetence. Agree with Spartan, they will be lucky to score a single goal.
Spartan3/1/2010 5:19 PM
it will be hard to dissapoint, most expect them to fail miserably, personally I will be surprised if they win a single game. They dont deserve to do well, you cant stuff around for years on end, neglect development despite having all the opportunity & facilities at your disposal & then suddenly appear out of the blue & beat the worlds top teams, please, this isnt the ANC where there is no competition & you can get paid for failing, no this is international competition, like exports, like trade, if you do not prepare & get good, you cant expect to do well against those that do. Bafana will be lucy to beat any one of the teams in the WC. Sorry, miracles seem to be over in SA for now
tman3/1/2010 5:04 PM
What nonsense is this, you'd swear it's not south Africans commenting here..but then again phew..here's one for you haters, hate the game not the players..pity you can't choose when you were born..nxa!!!
the little cherub3/1/2010 4:53 PM
"Bafana will surprise", Benni McCarthy - "a key English-based player ................what the fuck are you smoking, Parreira? Whatever it is, I'd love some!
Siviwe3/1/2010 4:52 PM
I guess most of you are whites or confused blacks wishing badluck on soccer. Bafana Bafana I am behind you all the way, I've got my vuvuzela with.
The Prophet3/1/2010 4:41 PM
Parreira has to say that, for 2million a month salary, I would also say that. Time will tell.
Hlamulo3/1/2010 4:41 PM
Pereira, you are very right. They will surprise the world of being the most useless host team in the world
Riaan3/1/2010 4:39 PM
The surprise is the sum we paid in stadiums to buy our entry into 2010
Benzo3/1/2010 4:39 PM
I like surprises :-)) Parreira is one of them.
zama King3/1/2010 4:38 PM
Wish parreira success in his dream, just hope tht its not a nitemare tht will shock the entire country- early exit of BB frm the Wrld Cup
bryan3/1/2010 4:34 PM
If they score a goal it will be a surprise.
Bafana3/1/2010 4:33 PM
Surprise or not. its SAFA that should be EMBARRASED. What did they do will all the money? What a shame to be South African at the SWC
Johanymous3/1/2010 4:25 PM
LOL! i wonder what the surprise will be. Maybe they'll all turn up for training?
Bongani Ncube3/1/2010 4:22 PM
Bafana Bafana will certainly surprise at the world cup...if they manage to win a single game!
mojo3/1/2010 4:14 PM
Wow, what's this guy been smoking ?????????
wayne3/1/2010 4:09 PM
LOL they dont have to do much to surprise us. At this stage scorring a goal would be a start and a half, winning a match is almost unthinkable. Ill be watching so please dont dissapoint.
Mdlambila Mandlanduna3/1/2010 4:01 PM
I'm starting to lose faith in Parriera and his selection criterea. Teko went AWOL at Pirates,he was not even on the bench when his team played yesterday and that very person will captain the National team,How's that possible??Based on what, form?? Teko didn't deliver even at the Confed cup let alone post the Confed at Pirates,he's been on and off the starting line up why is he getting regular call ups for Bafana? Teko does not qualify to be captain of BB and doesn't deserve to be in the team. Not only must Parreira look at the medical record of Benni but also his perfomance.
Villianous Batman3/1/2010 3:56 PM
If the surprise is one goal in the SWC, then it will truly be a surprise.
