Mexico steal march on Bafana

Johannesburg - While the Bafana Bafana cat, so to speak, is contentedly sharpening its claws against an assortment of clubs in Brazil, the Mexican mice have seemingly been at play and stolen a march on South Africa for the critical opening World Cup match at Soccer City on June 11 by arranging warm-up friendlies against soccer powerhouses England, Holland and world champions Italy.

Mexico's intensive build-up immediately before the World Cup would now seem to contrast markedly to that of Bafana Bafana, who have only a tentative fixture against Denmark and nothing else to show as far as opponents are concerned in late May and early-June before the World Cup is launched.

And what must be particularly galling for Bafana's Brazilian coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira, right now is that he made a special request to the South African Football Association (SAFA) to obtain England as pre-World Cup opponents.

Instead, Mexico will be playing England at Wembley Stadium on May 24, before the tricky Central American combination go on to play Holland on May 26 and Italy on June 3.

"The big problem for us," said a SAFA official, "is that most of the teams competing at the World Cup will be arriving in South Africa at a late juncture shortly before the start of the tournament - and, in any case, they are not keen to get involved at that particular time in an emotional contest in which the host nation is involved."

Bafana complete their current training programme in South America with a game against Paraguay in Asuncion and then proceed in April to another training camp in Germany - where further practice matches will be played against scratch club combinations.

"No fully-fledged internationals have yet been confirmed after the Paraguay game before the World Cup," said the SAFA official, "but we will obviously be trying to find suitable opponents to satisfy Parreira's request for tough opposition immediately before the big event itself."

And he further revealed that Argentina were among the teams that Safa were currently courting - although there was no definite confirmation from any of the proposed opponents.

In the process, the impression may justifiably have emerged that the World Cup's host nation should have lined up their final dress rehearsals some time ago instead of hustling to make arrangements right now.

Everyone here in Mexico respects South Africa's chances of making it past the first round. We understand that Bafana are at home, and that this is a clear advantage, I am happy the WC is in South Africa, I believe it will show people your wonderful culture. I will be rooting for Mexico, and the only thing I hope is that it is a clean match. VAMOS MEXICO!

I would like to hear what will these doomsday prophets will say after the first round when Bafana Bafana will be marching to the last 16. There were a lot of them before the Confed Cup. But they were so quiet after they realise that we are now in the semis. They will always have something to critisize. See you in the last 16!!! Doomsday Prophets.

Well playing against such strong nations for Mexico may dent their confidence. If they get unfavourable result. And in soccer, confidence is everything. Bafana Bafana should just keep on working and concentrate on their goals.

When every team was playing international friendlies, the samba boys were building endurance and mental strenght. They were on month camp playing beach football, bonding as team not individual stars and they brought the trophy to Brazil. Hands off Parreira!!! Media must now stop confusing middle class with their analysis and comparing us with G8 countries who failed to save themselves during recession. They boys will do us proud.

As I said before Bafana needs to get the early goal against Mexico and then through the kitchen sink at them by closing them down and don't give the f*^kers space to move cause they'll kill yeah. Also Bafana must manmark hard in the box 'cause Carlos Vela is a crafty bastard around corner times I watch him play for Arsenal as a sub and everytime he likes to needlessly fall over for penalties and such.

It really does not matter who mexico plays in the friendlies come the 11 june they will be up against an unstoppable bafana bafana & they are going down.

God be with you Bafana Bafana, you surely will need him. I don't want to hang my head in shame pre-maturely and I will give you guys all the opportunity to prove me wrong but, if soccer SA is as useless as the Government I don't have much hope. Can't wait to hear the excuses afterwards...

Just for once understand the reasons being certain situations before throwing the same old line. "they are not keen to get involved at that particular time in an emotional contest in which the host nation is involved." So what can SAFA do it England would rather not waste their time with Bafana Bafana? This goes for other teams that are mostly top 20. Why waste precious time and risk injury of key players playing team at pos 85?
Marc3/18/2010 6:48 PM
Nice to see that SAFA is as organized as our government!

Bad or the lack of planning !! Good luck Bafana Bafana
