Johannesburg - FIFA World Cup 2010 local organising committee (LOC) chairperson Danny Jordaan has praised the Nelson Mandela Stadium for its hosting of Bafana's game against Japan.

Jordaan feels the Port Elizabeth stadium showed that it was ready for next year's World Cup after successfully hosting the international friendly.

Jordaan told the Herald Online: "We are happy that the stadium is ready for the World Cup. From the (LOC's) standpoint ... everything went off well.

"The stadium's operational readiness had to be tested because we wanted to check if everything would work well under a maximum crowd."

Jordaan went on to praise the 44 000 people who attended the game (a record crowd in Port Elizabeth).

"I must say, the crowd was wonderful.

"History was made in Eastern Cape soccer when we had the biggest crowd ever during the international friendly, and it bodes well for the metro to have the game here. The media, the public and the business sector have played a huge role," he concluded.

what planet are these people on, read some of the blogs about the nightmare in getting home and the attempts of mugging not listing the traffic issues let alone the amount of Hookers that came out of every hole around the ground. The staduim might work but once again is it not about the full safe experiance. The only way anybody will make a penny out of this world cup is if u in Jordaans pocket. Good luck u will need it

Gavin, before you go mouthing off about 2010 success, wait until it has happened. I am still not convinced that enough has been done by our government to ensure the safety of the millions of spectators that are going to be visiting South Africa. In my opinion, our local crime industry is going to have a field day. That is the embarrassment I am concerned about. Let us not forget the last event held at the Port Elizabeth 2010 World Cup Stadium, criminals in the guise of police uniforms robbed one of the vendors in the stadium………..

"realist" has got it right. How much of FIFA profits are the giving back to S.A.? 44000 attended, how many paid & how much? S.A, cities will gain practically nothing in income, the residents will pay for the upkeep out of increased rares & taxes, if maintenance is ever done! Gunnar

Well, maybe those who were mouthing off last week about PE will now shut up. We may be Gareth Cliff's "armpit" city (his opinion as if it counts), but at least we can deliver. Unlike the Mother City - where it takes 9 months to deliver - I suppose it's because of the mountain!

It is really pleasing to see that our preparation for the big event in 2010 are going smoothly. It was a good thing that Japan demanded that the game be played in one of the venues which will host the WC games because will be able to identify problems and correct them immediately. We have to prove sceptics wrong and prove that Africa can deliver.

Congratulations to the people of PE. They came out to support Bafana and I was impressed by their dedication
