Hunt never in the race

Johannesburg - SAFA has revealed that Gavin Hunt was never considered a candidate for the Bafana Bafana managerial post.

The SuperSport United mentor has won three consecutive Premier Soccer League titles and is widely regarded as the best coach in the country.

However, the governing body overlooked the 45-year-old's credentials because he has not been involved in the national fold.

Pitso Mosimane has been 'unveiled' as the coach-elect and SAFA president Kirsten Nematandani insisted this was not under guidance from Carlos Alberto Parreira.

When asked by Football365.co.za if the Brazilian had a big role in Mosimane's near appointment at a press conference, he said: "No, we have not yet received Mr. Parreira's technical report yet and when we do, that will be subject to analysis.

"But this process is based on a history that we have as a country.

"In 2007 we appointed an understudy who happened to be Pitso and the other one was Khabo Zondo, who unfortunately took up a position at one of the clubs and couldn't continue.

"The issue of Gavin Hunt - he has never been an understudy for this process."

Hunt is now poised to take up a lucrative offer from FAZ President Kalusha Bwalya to become Zambia's head coach.

Hunt has already admitted it will be interesting to mentor the Chipolopolo and South Africa's loss is almost certainly going to become Zambia's gain.
