Ghana 'need' support of SA

Johannesburg - Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac said he hopes his side will have the support of the entire African continent when they take on the United States in Rustenburg on Saturday in the Soccer World Cup's round of 16.

Despite suffering a 1-0 defeat by Germany on Wednesday, Ghana still went through to the knockout stage as Group D runners-up where they will face the Americans, who won Group C after beating Algeria 1-0 on Wednesday.

Ghana now look to be Africa's sole representative in the last 16 in the first World Cup played on African soil, barring a near-miracle from the Ivory Coast in their final match on Thursday.

"To qualify is really very important for us and for Africa," said Rajevac.

"I am really very emotional and moved. I hope we can benefit from the support of all of the South Africa people and the continent of Africa.

"It's not really the time to rejoice over qualifying because of the match against the USA. We don't have much time."

Ghana were slayed by a super strike from Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil from the edge of the penalty area on the hour mark which proved decisive while Australia's 2-1 win over Serbia in the other Group D match was academic.

Ghana defender Hans Sarpei, who plays in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen, said his side face just as tough a battle against a USA side buoyed by their late win over Algeria, than if they were facing Fabio Capello's England who instead play Germany.

"We are in the next round and we are happy with that," said the 33-year-old veteran.

"Of course it was a defeat and the mood is a bit flat, but we are glad, nevertheless.

"Only dear God maybe knows why we will play now against the USA, but I don't know whether this game will be any easier than if we had played England."

For midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng Wednesday's match was an emotional occasion against the country of his birth, especially with younger brother Jerome playing for Germany

The brothers, born in Berlin, are feuding after Kevin-Prince's tackle on Michael Ballack in the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Portsmouth ruled the Germany captain out of the World Cup with an ankle injury.

"It was already something special for me to to play against Germany," admitted the 23-year-old Portsmouth star. "I have thought the whole day about that."

If it was Zim that went through to the next round would the same sentiment then also be applicable????? So why then now? @Zion, you are so right my man!
Zion Pay6/24/2010 7:02 PM
Would it be perfidious and treasonable to support say Germany or England. The fact that Ghana forms part of the African continent does and cannot impinge upon the sporting sentiments of an alien to that country. Africa and Africanisms should not dictate an individuals policy or perceptions to direct advantage to itself. In my own case I hope Germany or Brazil take the cup home. I cannot and refuse to be dictated to in that respect. When Ghana drops out who do South Africans support then. The whole issue of Ghana is bulldust and we know it and reminds one of the voting practices of the majority South Africans. A bunch of lapdogs.

ttt News24 is not biased its Africa. Listening to your tone, I dont think you know much about sports (football in particular) or politics. I advise you join the French team tonite, in France. I am sure their coach will shake your hand as you sound alike. Metomtam (et) The hebrew dictionary will tell you what it means.

jupiter6/24/2010 1:58 PM
If there happened to be a white football team from somewhere in Africa instead of Ghana, I am pretty sure none of the new Ghanain fans would support them - Africans indeed, this support is based on the same reasons they vote for their political party.
PaddySaffa6/24/2010 1:54 PM
Ghana, South Africans & Africans all over the world will be rooting for you!!
Miss Ego6/24/2010 1:52 PM

@Abrey and Sons: Just like political support, support for a team should be my own business. So please support the ANC next time it will mean a lot to them.

We were there last night with painted Ghana flag faces and flags, It was great. I was surprise how many South-Africans surported Germany. Please guys support Ghana as they continue to play for Africa. You have no idea how much it means for the people in Ghana. Many of them can not come to S.A., coz they cant afford it, but they will treasure and appreciate the support from all the Africans who are here. GOOD LUCK GHANA!
Gina6/24/2010 12:10 PM
You have my support , Africa is our continent and we do want one of our teams to go as far as possible, I am sorry they are playing the USA as I would have liked to see them get through gain aswell, but I will be rooting for Ghana.

Ghana - you have our support. Go on and do us proud!
Mike6/24/2010 12:03 PM
I think it's safe to say that the majority of South Africans are and will support Ghana. Last night, at the Ghana vs Germany game, a group of us (South Africans) set in the stands among a strong hold of Germans, and made more noise then the outright majority (and loved it)
Minnie6/24/2010 12:02 PM
Go Ghana we in SA are so proud of you and support you all the way.

Dee6/24/2010 11:28 AM
Ghana u good things make us proud
wormwood6/24/2010 11:24 AM
you certainly have the support just please tell your players to believe 100% in themselves this things are possible stop fearing you've got nothing to loose attack and attack and attack and attack stop worrying about defending but keep in mind that when you loose the ball then fall back and defend for death and get the ball run forward attack this what Brazil, Portugal, Germany do why is it difficult for Africa to do that? You certainly have the support but support does not play soccer your players are the ones who play and stop thinking that without support you won't win just win the support by performing all we want is the trophy to stay in Africa and unfortunately Ghana is the one only African team so think SA think home thats all you must do SA = Ghana so just kick the damn round thing behind the keeper stop defending you've got nothing to loose...
Jono6/24/2010 11:21 AM
Saffas will support Ghana for sure!
