Paris - French fans in Paris groaned and booed for their own team on Tuesday and even cheered for South Africa as they watched a critical World Cup match that came after the squad's public infighting left the nation ashamed and aghast.

Several thousand people, some wearing or waving French fans, showed up to watch the match broadcast on a screen across from the Eiffel Tower. But hopes lost ground as South Africa began scoring, and the mood turned against the French team, which lost 2-1 and was eliminated from the tournament, while Uruguay and Mexico advanced from Group A.

The crowd cheered loudly when France's Florent Malouda scored the team's first goal of the tournament. But people had also cheered when France's Yoann Gourcuff was shown a red card, and there were loud applause mixed in with the boos each time South Africa scored.

"Lots of people are for South Africa now," said Angelique Jurquit, 23, a radio journalist. "The French are disgusted with the results of their team, so this (cheering) is a bit to make fun of France now."

"It's funny, France is worthless," said Victor Malamoud, a 17-year-old Parisian. He said he came to "see the match, watch Les Bleus and hope."

Trouble started for Les Bleus when Nicolas Anelka crudely insulted his coach and was expelled from the French squad Saturday. Then the players protested against his expulsion by refusing to train Sunday.

Sports Minister Roselyne Bachelot, in South Africa until the end of the match on orders from President Nicolas Sarkozy, said Monday night that she spoke with the team and told them they had "tarnished France." She also said they cried.

Ahead of the crucial match with South Africa, newspapers implored the team to rise to the occasion: "A Bit of Dignity" read the headline on the daily Le Parisien. "Respect Your Supporters" read France Soir.

Even the famous head butt by Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 World Cup final, which tarnished his image as a youth model, seemed to pale amid the current drama. The captain of the 1998 World Cup champions was as incredulous, and "saddened," as the rest of France.

"They're being spat upon. Maybe they deserve it," Zidane told a news conference Monday in Johannesburg.

A salesperson at the largest Paris store of major sports chain Decathlon said sales of France team T-shirts had fallen off to a trickle since the drama began. Sales were "continuous" until mid-June with 113 sold between June 11-18, said Christelle Couleuvre.

Since the team refused to train, they are selling "almost nothing or very little", she said.

Coach Raymond Domenech is a top target of fans who feel betrayed. Facebook pages like "Goodbye Party for Domenech" were popping up. That one had several hundred thousand people so far saying they would attend. Location: "all over France."

Dude, at least we left the bloody WC with some dignity, unlike you and your attitude! You are right, Bafana isn't the greatest team ever, but I can guarantee you that all the WC spectators here in SA are having a absolute blast! Well done to the French team and all the other teams in the WC so far. I am sure France will redeem itself in time, as for the France coach... F you buddy! :P

What a sad puppy you are!! Bafana bafana rocks and has done us proud. So what if we did not move to the next round! We are going to prove ourselves the best world cup hosts ever.. Go back underground where you came from.

Well done Bafana! When crunch time came, you delivered. Thank you for silencing those negative, foul mouth South Africans. We may have exited the SWC but we do so in style nogal.

The only thing I can say is" Ek is gek oor hierdie plek". Bafana Bafana made me proud. I will wear my soccer shirt, blow my vuvuzela and the SA flag will stay on my car. Although you did not make the 2nd round you contributed in uniting this nation. If you can keep on playing the way you did last night you will play in the next world cup.

Bafana Bafana played very well and SAFA should appoint someone to coach on merits so that we can have a better team to compete in 2012 afcon.Well done Parrerra for building our team and for bringing back the winning spirit

I am sooo proud of you Bafana Bafana. You made my day by beating these arrogant French people. Keep it up.That was fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ho hum6/23/2010 8:29 AM
Somehow I don't think ANY of the French players will be representing their country again in the future. France will be building a new team from scratch after this world cup. Frankly, it serves them right. The world will not see the likes of Thierry Henry, Anelka, Evra etc. on the international football stage again. The players have tried to show their unity as a team, but the team does not only consist of the players on the field. There is a lesson there.

we as South Africans and i speak for a huge percentage, are very proud of our palyers. We had prayed for a miracle and God has given us a reason to celebrate. If only poeple would stop being negative and embrace their nation. Big ups to BAFANA BAFANA!!!

Although there are tears because you are out of the SWC, there is joy because you won against France. My faith in your ability was rewarded. Thank You Bafana Bafana .

@ A Name - You sound like the happiest person alive? Do you always have such a happy, positive outlook on life? Why are you not part of this fantastic vibe going on in SA at the moment? Or are you just too busy moaning and being SO negative to notice the great excitment and pride going on around you? Get a life, smile and enjoy life - you might actually enjoy it !!
build now for world cup 20146/23/2010 7:50 AM
I suggest we in the momentum of soccer building and use the platform NOW to start building. Can we keep sports and politics separate please and appoint a good non corrupt soccer body starting at grass roots (I know we harp on cricket and rugby but why are they excelling so much more than soccer). Cut out qouta trash go for experience, we 15 years into our democracy choose accordingly, that is , the right people for the job who are in it for the passion NOT the money. Go talent search in the poorer communities (look where Brazil is today) and start development today!!!!
well done6/23/2010 7:47 AM
To A NAME you must be a FROG and support frogs. Why dont you leave with the French. Well done you make us proud. We must look to the bigger picture and plan ahead for 2014.
sixstring6/23/2010 7:41 AM
I find that most people who say Bafana Bafana suck, were not true soccer fans to begin with. They got caught up in the hype and now that we are out, they bad mouth the team only because their own egos have been tainted. You made us proud boys, let's go from strength to strength.
Earthian6/23/2010 7:09 AM
A fitting conclusion for a non-representative South African team ! No surprises really ...
New Mantis6/23/2010 6:43 AM
The biggest failure of the French team comes from the coach for his inability to hold the team together. What a loser.
B Meyer6/23/2010 6:38 AM
We lost but I am still proud of our team Well done Bafana
Jugadambal (Jackie)6/23/2010 6:34 AM

Gillchansam6/23/2010 6:02 AM
Eish.....Sorry Son. my hopes rose and my heart raced when i saw how well bafana was playing, but, i guess it was not to be. I cried a little for my country. Its a sad day, but we still made history. GO BAFANA. - from one proud South African
ntaivic6/23/2010 4:04 AM
Had Bafana not have lost a game against Uruguay, things would have been much different this time around and our Boys would have prepared for a big fight of their lives against the Best in Group B.Turf luck guys but at least you made us proud. Next time .
chan6/23/2010 1:21 AM
Bafana is ranked in the World no...... the FROGS ARE RANKED IN THE WORLD NO? They were beaten today by the best of Bafana. I say well done Bafana!!! Good Riddance to the BLOODY ARROGANT, RUDE FRENCH!!!! GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY AND TAKE YOUR NEGATIVE EUROPEAN ATTITUDE AWAY FROM MZANZI!! MZANZI FOR SURE!!!! PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN!!

Dog6/22/2010 11:22 PM
Now we will see the true soccer fans, and not so much noise
andrew6/22/2010 11:02 PM
Bafana had one bad game and that cost them in the end. It should also be said that all 50/50 decisions in this game went against them. They were not disgraced and I am proud of them and so should all South Africans.
@ A name6/22/2010 9:34 PM
Look at your life then you'll realise what trully sucks...
Tom 6/22/2010 8:34 PM
France let themselves ,,and fans around the world down, Anelka is a DISGRACE!!!
Slimey6/22/2010 8:27 PM
Bafan can keep their heads high! Now from the ASHES of 2010, lets hope they approach Lucas Radebe as the NEW coach, to build a team that the WHOLE nation can support! Well done Bafana, a wonderful time was had by all... you were simply out of your depth!
Elizabeth @A name6/22/2010 8:15 PM
lol is that the best you could come up with? How well do you play soccer? Can you even play? Oh wait. No. You can't.
darkwing6/22/2010 8:07 PM
Hey,SA fans, hold up your heads. We did a lot better than was predicted. I actually feel sorry for the French players. Do they still have the guillotine in France?
A name6/22/2010 7:55 PM
