Cape Town - South African media reported on Saturday that two foreign television crews were robbed in Cape Town on Friday ahead of the draw for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The Argus newspaper said that a BBC crew filming on one of the scenic routes in the city had expensive camera equipment stolen by a group of robbers who smashed the windows of the camera crews' car.

BBC producer Andrew Bell said that they had reported the incident to the police.

"We weren't that far away, but they were so quick - in and out like a flash," he said.

Meanwhile two German journalists, who were walking to their car in the centre of town, were accosted by a group of men armed with knives and told to hand over their valuables.

They gave them their wallets, cellphones and air tickets.

Earlier on Friday, journalists had to abandon the Cape Town International Convention Centre after a hoax bomb scare.

The scare, which forced the evacuation of the entrance to the centre for under an hour, was the second in the city before the draw, which was attended by thousands of prominent guests and media.

A journalist was arrested after claiming he had an explosive device in his bag, which he dropped and then tried to run away.

Also on Friday, a South African was arrested over two hoax calls outlining a threat to Cape Town international airport. The man was tracked down "within minutes" via the cellphone he used to make the calls to a Cape Town suburb.

Security issues are one of the main concerns at the World Cup.

Those okes robbing the tourists, were the same MUPPETS jumping up and down like clowns, at the parade when our name was drawn as hosts 6yrs ago!! Funny though, surveys show that "WHITES" arent looking forward to the SWC.......... NOBODY wants to see thier country humiliated, and by the looks of things, it didnt take long!!!!

J Blogg, your uncles could not achieve what SA is achieving now and you expect the worst to happen in such a beautiful country. The world cup will go on and you and yours can pack and leave us to enjoy!!!!!!!!!!
viva anc12/7/2009 11:49 AM
hahaha and the best part is the thieves voted for D.A
Sipho12/7/2009 11:45 AM
This is just the tip of the iceberg: next come the arrests of foreign visitors for retaliating against attacks by South African locals and all the mud-slinging associated with that. Stick your tickets where the sun don't shine, Danny, Irvin and the rest of the SA thugs.

this type of criminal activity shows us that the needs of the people who live on the periphery of society had not been taken care of since 1994.if these criminals could have taken some vocational courses after dropping out of school,we would have facilitated that their dignity and self esteem be restored and they would be a benefit rather than a liability.
@ J.Blogg12/5/2009 9:26 PM
Fool - if it was that bad those tickets wouldnt have been sold - use your marble muppet
Matt @ Lesley12/5/2009 7:50 PM
You fool and are a walking mistake! You have a chip on your shoulder the size of the grand canyon - dont you see the benefit of this event? You are a poor disgrace of a South African! If you not South African go and put a shrimp on the barbie you tool!
J.Blogg12/5/2009 7:47 PM
Thanks for that article.!!! .l have just sold my tickets for a few bucks. Who wants to come to such a country where the comments about this article can't even agree, and the journalists make false bomb hoaxes, and l am going to mugged, murdered etc.?? Who? What a shame to see such a country go to seed...it used to be one of the greatest. You can't trust the Gov, you can't trust the journalists. you can't trust the 'liberated' and you can't trust justice.
Lesley12/5/2009 7:06 PM
All I want to say that I wish FIFA will see that the football cup was a big mistake and I would be the happiest person if FIFA gives the football to a more trustworthy host like morocco. I don't c lots of people coming to sa because I woulnt come if I knew I had a chance of my camera etc being stolen or if I might be hijacked. I am also sick and tired of the world/media feeling sorry for poor sa.
Common Sense12/5/2009 5:49 PM
Firstly to the BBC Crew - In no country in the world do you leave expensive equipment visible in a vehicle, DUH. Secondly, look at the positive that a Hoax caller was tracked down in minutes by our forces! Well done guys!! South Africa is a beautiful place and of course with the good there will be bad! i have lived incident free in cape town for 28 years!!! Come on! Sh$t happens-- dont stereotype!
LM12/5/2009 5:16 PM
No worries u negative lot. U must be praying for bad things to happen. Look at all the other countries and tell me truthfully that the grass is greener. I love my country (i'm not black african) and we will prosper SWC and and beyond. Sorry for dulling ur miserable day!!
Mogotsi12/5/2009 4:38 PM
Is it me or are these robberies of these journalists staged to destroy South Africa reputation Just like the Tibets riots before the olympics
peter12/5/2009 4:26 PM
Viva Zuma, viva Balter ( FIFA ) viva all ANC Supporters, now lets show the True SA as it is to the outside world, from the herdboy holding hands with the money grabbiing self opioniated head of FIFA ( Sis ) on stage, to all the crime riddled members of the ANC heres your last chance, plz dont f--- up, next time World Cup around we will be another buried Zimbabwe ! AFRIKA ADIEU !!!!

It's funny that the nationality of the UK and German journalists that have been robbed is mentioned, and that of a South African who made hoax calls, yet the foreign journo who made a haox bomb scare is not. Name and shame him too. There is a foul play here. Cape Town has had a number of shoots going on, without any incidents. Politics will now be brought in too, typical South Africans. But, who is going to take the blame: DA and Cape Town City Police or the ANC and SAPS? I also bet that the race card will also be used, saying those criminals were from the townships and squatter camps! Mudslinging will continue going on, but this world cup is for Africa, and it will succeed like the cricket and rugby world cups.

If you come down to the South next year, You're in for a big surprise. If you come down to the South next year, You'd better be very wise. For every criminal far and wide, Will welcome you with pockets wide. They'll gather there together because, That's the time the criminals have their picnic.
Lydon12/5/2009 4:12 PM
I was at the Fan Fest, we walked block after block to our car and not ONCE did I feel remotely unsafe. I had my cellphone out, as well as my wallet and cameras etc. There were police everywhere (who were very helpful after we found out we lost our car keys)

eish, where was julius...oh, sorry, da boy got protection.
Saffa in London12/5/2009 3:27 PM
Here we go...the negative onslaught begins. Thefts and muggings happen on a daily basis not - not just in SA. I live in a decent part of London and the local paper this week reported 4 or 5 muggings and break-ins. Its not the media but the readers that blow everything out of proportion with the below comments. My biggest fear is that the masses of tourists will fall in love with SA and esp Cape Town and buy up all the good property!
Brendan12/5/2009 3:27 PM
I Have requested all my friends and family abroad to stay away. Safer to watch the soccer at the local pub
Priester12/5/2009 3:26 PM
The first world cup on African soil will be soiled by Africans. Kill the criminals as they wish to kill our country! But then of course if they don't succeed to destroy the ANC will show them and lead by example!
Joanne12/5/2009 3:01 PM
I think that it's especially foolish to steal from foreign journalists (not that it's bright to steal from anyone else) as it's their job to report, ahead of time, what's going on in SA. Maybe we need a minister of crime - that way he/she could send out a memo?
travis beukes12/5/2009 2:58 PM
excellent! let them get robbed. let them experience the true danger in SA! did nt that guy with the website a few years ago predicted this is going to happen? there you have it!
bessie de kock12/5/2009 2:54 PM
And the government and Danny Jordaan said, nothing happened no cases of theft was reported. Shame on South Africa. Do not cover the robbers, catch them and put them on Robben Eiland in a cell
Devon12/5/2009 2:46 PM
And that is only for 1 night with a very few overseas visitors. The tourists should hold this Government and Sepp Blatter liable for each and every person that will be murdered.
JP12/5/2009 2:45 PM
WELCOME 2 THE JUNGLE
Thabo12/5/2009 2:37 PM
Roll on the SWC. Wait till all the tourists arrive, then it's open season for all the "scollies." its going to be fun
George12/5/2009 2:32 PM
So the 'fun' begins!
GT12/5/2009 2:31 PM
Bloody tourists, if they dont like it they should just leave.
Matt Nel12/5/2009 2:29 PM
Dissappointing....Cant these theives just F&^k off! Police should also use shoot to kill for these guys too because in my view they as waste of breath and a huge burden to us all. ANC has truely failed us all! Mbeki rule has taken this country many years backwards and AA policies will keep us there for the long run. As for the SA hoaxer - he must be sentenced to jail!
frankstar12/5/2009 2:27 PM
"Earlier on Friday, journalists had to abandon the Cape Town International Convention Centre after a hoax bomb scare." What? abadon - some of the media were standing next to the danger tape which had been used corndone off the area while the others sat blisfully in the media centre carrying with their work. The fact that some journalists were robbed is obviously of concern but you have ruined this story by inserting a flagrant exaggeration of the truth.
Chris12/5/2009 2:25 PM
Welcome to South Africa.
David12/5/2009 2:23 PM
If those were the only incidents we were fortunate, as these did not make it into the foreign media yet. Lets hope incidents like these does not deter the overseas supporters who are probably deciding to buy their tickets now.
Reality12/5/2009 2:23 PM
.... And so it begins... Do NOT even think of blaming the DA government, remember the ANC followers promise to make the Western Cape ungovernable.... and to make the DA look bad....? Well, there you go...
SA & Proud12/5/2009 2:18 PM
Welcome to S.A. dear friends. Hope you have a wonderful stay! My advice is find out from locals, the areas to avoid and u should be just fine.
paul12/5/2009 2:15 PM
It didn't take long
billy bob12/5/2009 2:10 PM
