FIFA gives SA eight out of 10

Cape Town – With only 100 days before the World Cup kicks off, FIFA has given South Africa 8 out of 10 in terms of their readiness to host the tournament.

“We have to get to 10 out of 10 by June 11 and we will. Everything that still needs to be done will be,” FIFA secretary-general Jérome Valcke said at the Cape Town Stadium on Monday.

He said that work was required on the areas around the stadiums. At some stadiums, including Soccer City in Johannesburg, work is still required on the paving and parking areas.

“There is still work. It has to be perfect inside and outside the stadiums. We have to get it right. Look here, we can play a game here tomorrow,” Valcke said in reference to the Cape Town Stadium.

“If you can build stadiums, how can you doubt that a few bricks will be laid or a few trees will be planted?” said Valcke.

The Cape Town Stadium is incredible in his view. Tickets for matches at the stadium in the city have been sold out.

“I won’t say that it’s number one because then I will be in trouble with the other eight host cities. It will be perfect for the teams in Cape Town,” he said.

He has also noticed that there is an increase in excitement in the country.

“The spirit is terrific in most cities and it’s time for that. I don’t want to fly back to Zurich. I would rather stay in South Africa until the World Cup,” he joked.

“The World Cup is here and everybody realises that. The feeling is very African and very different. In Europe you have to wait for the first game and see how the host team fares before the glue sticks. Here it has already started.”

Valcke said that all the criticism directed at South Africa of late did not surprise FIFA.

“It was the same with Germany. There was criticism. We’re not surprised. Criticism is part of the organising (of any tournament),” he said.

He had a simple message for the doubters: “Jump on a plane. There are still tickets.”

Good luck to 1. the fools who will be wasting there time on following the SWC spectacle - may there be endless problems, murders, crime and embarresments, 2. the large corporates buying up thousands of tickets to stay in Gov good books, 3. the thousands of free tickets to school kids to fill empty standions, 4. the only sport channel who will instruct the cameramen to portray a "positive" image of events and not showing the public what's really happening, etc. Make's one sick .....

stadiums above power stations, soccer above true economic growth.... oh well, I can see why I am out numbered. Enjoy the month of soccer, and the many years of economic woes. @commentators - I will be proud of South Africa when children don't go sleep hungry and when people don't have to live in fear of crime. That is more important than being proud of hosting a soccer world cup.

The FIFA Local Organising Committee needs to create some visibility around the WC in all the major cities. Let's have street banners, giant footballs, flags in shops/restaurants/houses/flats. That's how its done in Brasil. This is a major sporting event and not many countries get to host it (some dont have the capacity to do so). We must be proud of our achievement so far!!!

Bopa comrades CitizenZ and all other anti-2010 counter revolutionists...Yada yada yada blah blah blah...it is happening with or without your support...whatever you say or even thinking its ur problem...SA 2010 is on and ignore at your own peril...Never again, will SA be controlled and ruled by the ignorant white supremists...we supported RWC 2005, the cricket world cup, etc, but you have not supported the Nations Cup in 95, the All Africa Games,etc.--Some of us don't even understand the rugby concept, and yet we supported the Boks from 95 to date, and will still do so next year when they will defend the RWC in NZL, because we are a better & forgiving people...So stop the nagging and start supporting...

I am a Namibian and truly I have never seen a more negative nation than SA. Stop only seeing the negative and focus on the positive for your country and for Africa. All those other 1st world countries have crime but they dont blast it out like the newspapers in SA. This is where the problem is they only report on the negative and the crime start reporting on the good and good will follow. I know the SWC will be a huge success like all the other W/C that SA hosted

Christelle's correct. +- R60 billion. Add the road upgrades and the Airports to showpiece the SWC but not the Gautrain. That's +R60 on it's own. You know your African country's in trouble when they start to talk a billion here and a billion there. But you really are in trouble when like South Africa's big mate Zim you start talking trillions. Ag really what's a trillion here or a trillion there really? African countries are lucky I guess they just print more money when they need it and make billbords with the old notes!

I am immensely proud of South Africa for fronting up to the challenge of hosting the World Cup and pulling it off. As for the doubters out there - sorry but you're outnumbered. Happily the voices of all those who believe in South Africa will be far louder and cover yours up. @ Christelle - the soccer supporters from around the world will be coming and spending money which will bring money to the people of South Africa. The heightened awareness of South Africa will increase future tourism, which again will bring money into South Africa. So please try to see the positives of this, as a long term benefit. Development happens a step at a time - not overnight. As the saying goes "Rome wasn't built in a day".

60 thousand million equates to 60 Billion rand... And 60 Billion was NOT spent building stadiums, Im not entirely certain of the figure but i can tell you that 60 Billion is more likely the entire cost of upgrading ALL facets of infrustructure. Just to put it in perspective, Soccer city cost 3 Billion, Cape Town 5 Billion and the first phase of upgrading Gauteng highways is 5 billion...

Stadiums maybe........what about transport, crime and all the rest.........I think not

@ CitizenZ..Sorry mate you are on your own this time around. Everyone is happy to see the world cup succeed. Irrespective of color. Just be happy for your beautiful country for once. This will add value to your kids in the future. I’ll pray for you

Everytime I see one of these new bling stadiums I want to weep. These huge excesses in the face of the dire poverty in SA. The champagne parties. The fancy cars. The designer clothes. Seems the SA leaders and FIFA are totally out of touch with the reality in SA as they sweep themselves up into a frenzy with this bling event in the name of soccer. As a gesture if really concerned about South Africa and it's plight perhaps Mr. Blatter and FIFA will donate all the income from SWC2010 to build the desparately needed houses and infrastructure for the 30 million poor South Africans. Oh and it would also be mandatory to rebate the +- R60 thousand million - yes R60 thousand million spent on building these soccer mauseleums.Or does FIFA just play soccer while Rome burns? Because burn South Africa surely will if the needs of the poor continue not to be met

I am a die-hard rugby supporter, was last at a soccer match 40 years ago. But guys, for goodness sake, let's get behind our team and stop complaining and casting doubt on everything! First the critics said tthe stadiums cannot be built - they are. Then they said the tickets will not be sold - they are. Let's get with the spirit - this is tremendous for all of us! GO BAFANA!!!!!! GO SOUTH AFRICA!!!!!

Its incredible to see the people still being negative about the world cup. Its a common argument but I still stand behind that money must be spent to get money. With the showcasing of the SWC it will show the rest of the world the true South Africa and not the perceived nature of lions and elephants running around with locals in loin cloths. The infrustucture upgrade has created thousands of job opportunities and skill development, the same skill development that will help people. So start looking at the fact that SWC is going to be a spectacular event! Cant wait!!

What a stupid comment! People like you are living in a wrong country and hence you will always moan about everything under the sun, you are the first person i've heard moaning about infrastructure being built. From the tone of your comment, i can tell you want to make this a DA v/s ANC and BLACK v/s WHITE issue.
tman3/2/2010 8:36 AM
citizenZ what do you mean by 5 million tax payers, let me guess white tax payers get a life we all pay our taxes most of us are aware of corruption and money wasting so please go and do your research on how many tax payers are there in s.a

It's great to see a positive attitude and good news report w.r.t. South Africa hosting the world cup. Keep it up SA!!
CitizenZ3/2/2010 4:52 AM
Wonder who is going to pay the debt for all the stadiums and infrastructure which was developed. Who is going to look after the stadiums and feed the bill? Let me guess... the non soccer enthusiast. The 5 million tax payers left in the country. That is why I am against the soccer world cup. With the rugby and cricket world cup, the tax payer did not had to pay for stadiums, parties and other expenses.
