Cruyff blasts 'dirty' Dutch

Johannesburg - Netherlands legend Johan Cruyff has slammed the Dutch team for playing 'anti-football' in the Soccer World Cup final.

Spain emerged victorious in Soccer City on Sunday following a 1-0 win after extra time as Andres Iniesta scored the crucial goal to earn their first ever world title.

Cruyff was part of the Holland team that was famed for playing 'Total Football' in the 1970s, but the 63-year-old was highly critical of the 'vulgar' display at the weekend.

The Oranje had a gameplan to unsettle Spain with tough tackles but Bert van Marwijk's men were lucky not to have more than one player sent off during the 120 minutes.

"Thursday they asked me from Holland, 'Can we play like Inter? Can we stop Spain in the same way (Jose) Mourinho eliminated Barca?'" Cruyff told El Periodico, in reference to the way Inter Milan defended their way to a UEFA Champions League semi-final victory over Barcelona.

"I said no, no way at all. I said no, not because I hate this style - I said no because I thought that my country wouldn't dare to and would never renounce their style. I said no because, without having great players like those of the past, the team has its own style.

"I was wrong. Of course I'm not hanging all 11 of them by the same rope, but almost. They didn't want the ball.

"And regrettably, sadly, they played very dirty. So much so that they should have been down to nine immediately, then they made two (such) ugly and hard tackles that even I felt the damage.

"It hurts me that I was wrong in my disagreement that instead Holland chose an ugly path to aim for the title.

"This ugly, vulgar, hard, hermetic, hardly eye-catching, hardly football style, yes it served the Dutch to unsettle Spain. If with this they got satisfaction, fine, but they ended up losing.

"They were playing anti-football."

Holland were openly critical of referee Howard Webb after the Englishman dished out 14 yellow cards.

Cruyff was also unhappy with Webb's performance but believes he could have been even harsher with his decisions.

He added: "When we say, often, that we do not like talking about referees, it is true and, above all, because only refereeing like that last night by the English Howard Webb can create in us a state of such indignation that then yes, it is necessary to comment.

"Because you can referee wrong, make a mistake, but what you cannot do is create your own sense of justice and, even worse, invent a very personal application of the rules.

"Not only did he not send off two Dutchmen (including Arjen Robben who deserved the second yellow) but he also looked the other way at times when he should have involved himself.

"A World Cup final deserves great refereeing and, above all, deserves a referee who dares to do everything it means to be a judge."

Sithole, that is not how soccer is played. Read the rules of the game. You cannot tackle from the back, you cannot tackle studs up and you certainly cannot 'kung-fu,' tackle an opponent. Added to this if you intentionally 'dive,' you can eventually end up been red carded. oh! by the way - tennis players at least don't dive..........Nortier - you are just sour grapes that Spain won the game fair and square. Not only did they win the final against a bunch of thugs, they also won the the World Cup. To think I was supporting the Dutch to beat Spain. What the hell was I thinking?

Holland was in the final and you were not, do not take it out on the Dutch! I have seen players from all countries making dirty attacks and others fall over when you look at them, unfortunately it is part of modern footbal!
vp sithole7/14/2010 9:07 AM
well thats how football is. its the game plan to frustrate your opponents. Soccer is not for sissies. This is not tennis

Are these not the same 'Orange' sausages that castigated Brazil for playing dirty when looked at closely it was the same 'Orange' sausages that kept on diving and nicking players of Brazil and other teams they faced. That Robben chimp of a man is such a sucker for diving and he might as well swing his arms in breast stroke next time he ploys the turf. Cheats never cross and the ref of the final might have picked up on Chimp Robbens dives in the previous 2 games. It's also good that they ignored him like a broke guy ignores debts coz divers kill the game. It's amazing that one team can have both diving chimps and kung fu kicking gorrilas. The Matadors really gored the Lemons errr i meant Oranges.

I went into the match wanting to support Holland, but when i saw the way they were playing, there was no way. Had I been refereeing that match, Holland might have finished with six men instead of ten. Their performance was a disgrace. Had they done the same things outside the stadium as they did on the pitch, several would have ended the night in handcuffs.

Can an excellent footballer like Johan Cruyff really turn his back on his country of birth making comments like these on the national team he once played for? If possible I understand why they failed winning the SWC while he, being nothing less than a traitor, was still playing for them... The comment receiving a bribe also make sense. What Webber said about whatever, it remains clear that Vettel by video evidence is clearly responsible for the accident between the Red Bull team mates.... Finally, the 1st tackle that was just yellow carded... there was indeed spanish tackles with the same intent... Always note it is about intent not the result. De Jongh should have been red carded. There was a beautiful attempt in open play missed by Robben, the spanish did not once in the 90 minutes created such opening... If Robben really acted that much Puyol would have been of the field with the second attempt. Spain won because 11 played 10 not because they outplayed the Oranje...

Well done Spain you did your country proud throughout the tournament. Just a pity that Torres was so out of form. As for the Netherlands, the majority of your players are a joke. If there was a best acting award Robben would have got it for all his obvious dives and he together with de Jong should have been sent off for is 'karate' tackle. While we all enjoyed the spectacle of the soccer World Cup, the Netherlands were an absolute disgrace and did soccer/football a diservice. The other negative was the general standard of refereering and linesmanship which for a World Cup Tournament never mind league fixture was a disgrace. The Dutch giving a knighthood to their coach is beyond understanding as they are condoning his cynical behaviour as well!
srsh7/13/2010 12:15 PM
Dutch team was a total disgrace. They purposely built a game plan to take advantage of the fact referee would try to avoid giving red cards to avoid influencing the game. Except for England-Algeria .... I have watched every game this World Cup & the Netherland's performance is by far the worst performance any team put out in a game. Yes, Spain dominates the ball. The only way to beat them right now is to sit back & counter-attack on turnovers or big goalie saves. It's was everyone was trying to do & actually the gameplan that made Span lose their first game this tournament. Is it easy ???? NO WAY !! Spain is extremely good. The final was the first time in this World Cup, I felt football was a dirty sport & understood why the Americans can hate it so much. Football played like this is dirty/painful/ugly & just plain disgusting. For any Dutch players to even consider bad-mouthing the referee makes me want to vomit. They should be fined or temporarily banned for all the crap they got away with during the Finals.

Soccer is a sham, an act, a disgusting pretence at sport where the best actors get the most advantage. It's not a sport for real men OR women. The whole soccer industry is dirty.

I was there, at the Final Game on Sunday. I must admit that I had hoped for a 'wow' game from both teams. However, what we saw was a Dutch team that went all out to make sure that they did their best to disgrace themselves and the beautiful game. I certainly think that the better team won in many aspects. The Spanish played hard to win and displayed good sportsmanship throughout, the same cannot be said for the Dutch. It is sad to see grown men argue with the referee about a decision and then 'throw their toys out of the cot' when it did not go their way. It is important for sportsmen and women to remember that when they play their sport on this great platform, that not only are adults watching the game - but millions of aspiring children who have dreams to do the same. It is even more saddening to watch the Dutch coach remove his medal and grimace. Where has good sportsmanship gone?? Both teams in the Final Game were role models to millions on the day.....the only team that deserves to hold the title of World Champs is Spain. Welldone SPAIN - VIVA ESPANA!!! VIVA!!
Dean7/13/2010 9:53 AM
I saw the game and I don't think the dutch played dirty at all. They did play aggressively though but they had to try break through the possesive Spanish style of playing to create scoring oppertunities. There were also a lot of questionable incidences from the Spanish side. I didn't care who won because I think they both did very well in the tournament.
RICARDO7/13/2010 9:53 AM
i agree whole heartedly with Cruyff, a team that is playing such ugly football does not deserve to win the game. They were really out to play the man and not the ball. Shameless!!!! I am Dutch supporter but with what they displayed on Sunday i was ashamed. I was expecting total football from them but unfortunately Spain were the ones playing that type of football.

I am not a soccer expert or fan.Develop a taste for the game with South Africa presenting the World Cup.The Dutch Team demonstrated in the final what the British will refer to as "lack of moral fiber"under extreme pressure. The Dutch team were psychological not prepared for the final and became "a little bit bossies when their game strategy did not go according to plan. The lesson that I have learnd out of the final is that Soccer is a game of skill, brains and emotional(psychological) stability. The Dutch Team did not understand this, paniced and it resulted in a mediocre performance(very boring) and a lost opportunity. If

Fifa should ban Holland from the next World Cup. We don't need thier spoiling tactics again.
ferdi7/13/2010 9:06 AM
JJ, you talk rubbish, take you dutch suppoort and shove it were the sun dont shine friend, the dutch played the worst football game anyone has ever witnessed, apart from the Portugal game in the l;ast SWC where once the again the dutch were the aggressor, if you cant beat a team try your darndest, but dont be stupid and play rough ugly footabll, we are not use to the dutch doing this, but they were so out played by a brilliant Spanish team that they then blame the ref, he had zero choice, hooland could have lost 2 players in the 1st 20 min, they made the final ugly and a fiasco, the coach should lose his job immidiatly as these were his tactics, his pathetic and so is this crap cheese head team. spain will retain the cup at the next WC, the dutch will iss thge Brazil WC. Gauranteed.

Sorry, here we call it soccer and we blow vuvzelas ! Check your dictionary or Wikipedia: The game of football is any of several similar team sports, of similar origins which involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball with the foot in an attempt to score a goal. The most popular of these sports worldwide is association football, more commonly known as just "football" or "soccer". Unqualified, the word football applies to whichever form of football is the most popular in each particular part of the world, including American football, Australian rules football, Canadian football, Gaelic football, Rugby league, Rugby union and other related games. These variations are known as "codes." The way the Dutch played was sad, mean and stupid and a waste of their great talents. They were lucky not more were sent off. They had plenty of great chances to score as well and did not take them. It did look as if they were scared of the Spanish and had to intimidate them. Spain on the other hand only really had 2 good games, most probably peaked at the right time and the coach picked the right game plan. So the Dutch need to take a long hard look at themselves, so near but so far. Awesome world cup though, atmosphere in South was mindblowing, viva soccer!

So "get it right" you are saying that It is not SWC but FWC.mmmmmh wonder where you been the last month

Cruyff has crawled so far up Spain's arse over the last 2 decades, I'm surprised he hasn't applied for citizenship yet!
Foot ball vs Soccer7/13/2010 8:55 AM
Soccer city is having a name change, it is now called the National Stadium, this so more events can be held
JJ7/13/2010 8:48 AM
Of course he is supporting Spain, he managed Barca in the late eighties and his style of Total Football is firmly entrenched there, the Dutch could have beaten Spain just like Inter beat Barca, no doubt about it, at least he also admits that the ref was making mistakes. As for anti-football he said that about Brazil in the 2002 final, I do not think he should use this term so generally...
Lav7/13/2010 8:48 AM
Well I must say, I agree with Cruyff. If you compare the final with normal Soccer it was definitely over the top with the amount of fouls and back chatting from the Dutch side. I hoped for more of an attacking and defending game rather than a start-stop, free kick, foul here, dirty tackle there game like on Sunday evening.
Mark7/13/2010 8:45 AM
soccer, football, same game....
Thabang7/13/2010 8:42 AM
I dont think anyone takes you seriuosly except Barcelona.
Fee7/13/2010 8:42 AM
I blame the ref squarely on this one. He was way too harsh on some of the Durch tackles and way too lenient on some of Spains. De Jongh, though, should have been sent packing for that shameful attack on Alonso. Spain saw the Dutch gameplan and changed strategies by playing the ref and the idiot fell for it hook, line and sinker. Every time a Spanish player went down, even in Iniesto's case, running and falling over Dutch players on the ground, the ref blew in Spain's favour! Spain played for the easy decisions for them even if it meant making the Dutch look like the bad guys.
Ed7/13/2010 8:37 AM
Pittance. Cruyffje, you didn't do so well in your days either, did you? It takes one to notice one... Like Webber, who got money in an offshore account to be biaised and leniant to Spain, I notice that you also have financial gains for your statement..
William McIntyre7/13/2010 8:32 AM
For those who witnessed the great Dutch team in the 70's would agree with Johan Cruyff. It has nothing to do with where he is working. I do / did not work in Spain and I agree with his comments. The name 'Beautiful Game' was introduced by another "great" Pele and he was literally kicked out of the 1966 World cup. It seems that inferior teams have to resort to violence in an attempt to achieve. It was a sad way to end what was a great tournament.
Get a life7/13/2010 8:31 AM
Well then you better tell them to rename soccer city you moron. Whats up with the attitude its "football" . you sound like an arrogant pom. get a life and stop with this crap.
@John7/13/2010 8:30 AM
Having watch the game last night, cannot help agree with Cruyff. Just because he works in Spain does not remove the fact that he is Dutch. I cannot understand why De Jongh and van Bommel were allowed to remain the field within the first 30 minutes of the match. The de Jongh kung-fu kick would have made Bruce Lee proud. Xabi Alonso was totally unprotected as he was going for the ball and I believe that English referee had a worse game than all the English players combined. Granted, it was a tough match to referee, but there is one thing to play a team close and rough them up, but there is another to be thugs parading as footballers. Perhaps the Dutch watched videos of their cousin, Bakkies Botha, and they thought they should behave the same? To think I went to the stadium supporting the Dutch. Not a fan of Spain and their 1 goal per match returns, but I saw myself celebrating their goal because of the thuggery of the Dutchmen
Thulani Makhubu7/13/2010 8:30 AM
Cruyff you are spot on due to dutch behaviour the referee ended up having an attitude against them. We only started enjoying good football 2nd half otherwise the match was scrappy.
LS7/13/2010 8:29 AM
I could not agree with Cruyff more - The Netherlands team came out and played a dirty game - and although they had so much support from their country and SA, such play does not deserve to win. Viva Espana!!!!!
Julius7/13/2010 8:28 AM
He just doesn't want to see any Dutch team do what he and his team couldn't do. I mean he even said before the game that Spain would win, how's that for supporting your country?
zoot galoot7/13/2010 8:20 AM
Eish FFS - now we need to to do the renaming thing again. Soccer City becomes Football City, A rose by any other name... blah blah blah. The beautiful game? Not on Sunday night I am afraid to say.
Simon7/13/2010 8:20 AM
Well said Cruyff! the dutch were down right dirty, for a second I suggested that Bakkies had given them a team talk before the game..! More importantly, at the end of the day, the best team of the night lifted the trophy... The sad thing about SOCCER is that if spain had lost the spanish would be blaming the ref... But ultimately the problem with this game is all to do with the ref... Only two players should be allowed to speak to the ref, the two captains..! and secondly, TV refs should be introduced at the goal line! A goal is a goal, whether technology is used or not!
Linda7/13/2010 8:03 AM
I agree wholeheartedly. The Dutch played dirty, ugly SOCCER and if they'd played like that from the beginning they wouldn't have made it to the 16s. I was bored and irritated with the game from the beginning and I'm glad the Dutch lost. GO SPAIN.
Dear FFS...7/13/2010 8:01 AM
Who cares? Yawn.
Wow7/13/2010 7:55 AM
I love this honest post-analysis of the game....

Just one correction it is not soccer it is Football.
John7/13/2010 7:39 AM
I wish that I could say to this Cruyff guy, you talking nonsense in this matter. Because you working the most of the time in Spain you need the Spanish votes.
