Bullet-proof vests for 2010?

Germany - Germany's World Cup stars were warned on Wednesday to expect to wear bullet-proof vests if they venture away from the team hotel at next year's tournament in South Africa.

The head of Leverkusen-based security firm BaySecur, who look after the the German Football Federation (DFB) and their guests when the national team play away from Germany, says their stars like Michael Ballack must take extra care in South Africa.

BaySecur is one of the firms expected to be employed by the DFB while the team is involved in the tournament which runs from June 11 until July 11 when the final will be held at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium.

"The possibility for the players of moving outside of the hotel boundaries should be kept to a minimum," BaySecur's Guenter Schnelle told German magazine Sport-Bild.

"Otherwise there must be a full escort: armed security guards and bullet-proof vests for the players."

The German Football Federation (DFB) are already looking to step up security around the team hotel in Pretoria for the World Cup.

Because of high crime rates in the republic, the DFB are taking no risks with security, says their security boss Helmut Spahn, and are looking to recruit 20 extra security guards for the team's stay at their five-star accommodation.

Private bodyguards will protect the players both within and around the Velmore Grande hotel in Pretoria.

"We will probably use more personnel than we would normally have," said Spahn, who will spend four days in South Africa next week looking at security arrangements.

"We need to first of all get an idea of what security arrangements are already in place for both the team and the media.

"Then we will decide then whether to improve the security measures or whether they are sufficient."

According to Spahn, there is little chance the DFB will rely only on local security guards in South Africa and Germany's federal police force is already in discussions with the DFB on the issue.

South Africa has the highest rate of violent crime in the world, and while many readers may not have had to deal with a carjacking, armed robbery or similar incident yet it is highly likely they or someone in their immediate famioly will before long. The German team took necessary precautions, and wisely so. Anyone with the money to do so would do likewise, or regret it.

we should tell all the teams to wear bullit prove vests. That way we can win this thing lol

I support the decision to equip the team with bullet proof vests. Necessary or unnecessary, it's a precautionary measure. So many people are ridiculing this article, but if one of the team did get shot I can guarantee that just as many people would say that the team should have known that crime in Gauteng is serious and should have been prepared. Comparing the soccer world cup and the cricket 20/20 isn't a good comparison either. The differences are huge. For one, we are among the best cricket teams in the world. If we lose a cricket game, we still had a good game and people can be civil about the loss. Our soccer team has just slid down to what...80th in the world ranking? (someone help me out here.) If we get knocked out of the first round (let's face it, it's likely), I can just picture hordes of soccer hooligans (no, this is not a racist remark, it happens all over the world) going rampant and finding other people to blame for the loss. Judging from the way our countryfolk deal with grievances, rioting is highly likely and violence may follow. On a positive note, the world cup is beneficial to our country because maintenance to infrastructure that should have been carried out many years ago is finally being done. Our roads are actually becoming driveable again. Say what you want about Gautrain and Rea Vaya but I think it's a good thing to push the development of our country. At least it isn't currently atrophying like it has done for the past number of years. So I respect the decision to protect Germany's players from any eventuality. Prevention is better than cure. Especially when it's gunshot wounds we're talking about. I hope no teams are intimidated by our crime rate. Welcome to our country, and show our players how to play as a team.
Frankc10/27/2009 8:50 AM
Wow drastic but understandable if OUR OWN "leaders" led by example with their high speed blue light brigades full of bodyguards that regard it as tooo dangerious to drive at normal speed. Surely such high profile players that GENERATE a lot of income is far more valuable than a minister doing bokkerol than to spend instead of earn money.

Bullet-proof vests for our friends the German team in the World Cup? Waste of money...they won't be there long enough.
@ chris in oz10/23/2009 12:38 PM
chris you talk rubbish the oz rugby team was here for the world cup did they wear bullet proof vest no. Even in German the is crime your place is not heaven remember. If the Germans want excuse because they have failed in Europe and they will still failed again in 2010. bull sh!!!!!!!

This discussion is so amusing. The german team charged a private security firm with their protection. Members of this private firm supposedly gave the advice to wear bullet-proof vests. And now your people do like if it would be the opinion of all germans, that SA would not have the ability to carry out the tournament. That´s simply not true. Why do you think so many german tourists come to your country every year? According to statistics more than from any other country around the world, for it´s a beautiful country. So why do you impute the stupid articles in sa-newspapers being the opinion of all germans? But allow me to ask you just this: If my south african girlfriend (she is living in cape town) is living behind a security fence with a burglar alarm installed in her house, like all her neighbours (this is by far not common in europe), why should the german team not be allowed to take precautionary measures? And by the way: if you are telling here, that the german team is not welcome to the worldcup, then at least be consistent enough and abstain from german investments in your country. I never had problems with south-africans, no matter if they were black, white or coloured people, but the behavior of some people in here is just pathetic for they just refer to stupid articles they read in a newspaper and think they can judge people by that. This is more than disrespectful. Have you ever taken in consideration, that someone has an interest just to sell newspapers? So please cool down and start to think about what you read.

Wake up SA. This is the state of your country. The WC will be a huge failure due to 1 big reason: the crime. I applaud Germany's decision to make their team safe. And these measures probably would not even be enough. The only way Bafoona will win is if Brazil, Germany, Argentina (or even Uzbekistan) get half their players killed in drive-by taxi shootings, hi-jackings or if they are followed from O.R. Tambo to their hotel and then killed for the 5 Euro cash in their posession.

Pllleeeeaaaasssseeee get a life! Our country has many faults, and yes, the crime rate is higher than in other countries, but I assure you, visiting sunny S.A. is just the same as visiting any other western country. We're not backward or 'dof' in any way, so don't try publicity stunts to get in the news. If it's that dangerous in your little mind, then pull out of the 2010 cup, you'll do us a favor! And to all you guys who use pre '94, apartheid, skin color, or any other excuse for the state of our great country, ag shame, get over it, we live in a world where crime is rampant all over, not just in S.A. I'm far from patriotic, but man, the BULLETPROOF GERMANS got my back up!! ROFL!! I love our country, viva S.A.!!!!

Well the crime is big in South Africa, you can't blame them, but it is funny thou!! I was really hoping South Africa was not going to get the World Cup the country cant afford it, instead of spending all the money on new buildings and roads, that might not even be finished by next year. The country should have spent the money on a cure for aids and helping the poor, homeless and hungry. But South Africa is not safe, crime is a big problem. True crime is everywhere in the world, but South Africa is out of control.
FACTS ONLY10/22/2009 12:39 PM
Please understand that the Germans are looking after their citizens. They are taking measures to protect them against crime, albeit over the top. We can only wish that our government protect us as much as other governments protect their citizens.
Gruntfuttock of Africa10/22/2009 12:21 PM
These comments made by the company BaySecur are probably another aspect of the increasing propaganda campaign to relocate the SWC to Gremany which would be the natural host at short notice should SA default or be proved incapable.
buz10/22/2009 11:40 AM
@Thulani: If you were able to read all the comments you would realize that I picked three descriptions (idiots, stupid, paranoids) used in previous comments ... scroll down ... If you still cannot find them I'll help you ... BTW: My name is Buz, I do not need to hide ... and I wasn't in SA before 1994, I deliberaty chose to return after 1994 Where is your comment to "Mamby" ??? Or do you like throwing petrol bombs too ???
Boerseun10/22/2009 11:03 AM
No-one is in his right mind can blame these people from taking every possible precaution tho protect themselves. Even if they decided to stay away, I would absolutely have uderstood. It's time that we as RSA people realize that what we think on other people safety and our image is not more important than the loss of any life or the harm possible to any person.
Thulani10/22/2009 10:58 AM
Some people seem to suffer from intellectual defficiency, e.g. the guy who call himself BUZ. Just recently South Africa hosted the 20/20 cricket world cup, and they were not compaining about crime. Buz also calls other fellow South Africans Idiots, while trying to get his point across and maybe he need to have a look at himself. One doesn't deny the fact that there is a problem with crime in South Africa, as there was a problem with crime during the apartheid era and it's not an ideal situation. People mustn't only complain when it's soccer world cup coming to South Africa. Guys like Buz remind me of Pre 1994 elections when some people were "scared to lose their homes" once the black government comes to power. Get over yourselves, we are not Zimbabwe!!
buz10/22/2009 10:26 AM
With great interest I have read the comments to what the Germans plan to do, vests for their players and their own security staff. There is some appreciation for a wise decision by the Germans responsible for the life of their Players and Staff. I am happy that we still seem to have a certain percentage of intelligent people in SA. But as I expected the usual bunch of ignorants are slamming the Germans and insults are flying in at their best. Do you guys realize two facts: 1.) We are living in the country with one the highest murder rate in the world. Your denying this doesn't make it better. You yourself are the idiots, the stupid, the paranoid. And I propose we do not care about you getting hijacked, shot in the faces or killed. Get treated by our peace loving and caring fellow criminal countrymen the same way you recommended the Germans (and all other visitors) should be treated. If you prefer to rather lie to yourself then face reality ... 2.) Some people around the world can read and comprehend English. I love the way you idiots, stupid and paranoid make them feel wanted and welcome way ahead of the World Cup. I guess the only way to make you aware of what is going on in SA is to advise all foreigners to boycott 2010. That way it would really hurt ... But I guess not even that will uplift your obviously lacking intelligence ... Or maybe you are just preparing yourself for the elimination of Bafana in round one and have started your obvious search for scapegoats ... would suit you, that is what happens in SA every day anyhow ... Anyway: I have sent your comments to as many people I know in Europe, Japan and the States ... just to make them aware of what they should expect in SA. Let's see what they think about you morons ... Welcome to SA ... 2010 ?? Hahaha ...
anton10/22/2009 10:21 AM
What are they "sinking" of. Wondering what is coming up next. First the gras is not up to standards to the german national coach and now bullet proof vests. All other nations coming to SA are enjoying our hospitality ( e.g. India with the T20 cricket ). This is a disgrace to the SA people. Hope Pretoria can handle them and show them the closest way to Oliver Tambo after the play off round.

they should also bring helmets, just to make sure that criminals will be able to recognise them.

This is just typical German thoroughness. The same trait that gave us Audi's, BMW's and the Bugatti Veyron. Also keep in mind that the trheat is very real and has actually been proved as such: one of Michael Flatley's dancers WAS in fact killed in front of their hotel during a mugging not too long ago.

Try using a bullet proof vest when we throw our petrol bombs you cowards.

Wasn't it this year or last that someone on a FIFA delegation got shot in Sandton for his laptop? Does that ring a bell? I can't remember exactly how the story went... just wondering if perhaps to the rest of the world that wasn't seen as simply another of the 100s of daily murders we have here. Just a thought...
Sam10/22/2009 7:56 AM
Like anyone really gives a toss about Germany.
cj10/22/2009 7:53 AM
As South Africans we have become accustomed to living behind burglar bars, avoiding certain areas, closing car windows etc. Crime is something we live with all the time if it hasn't happened to you its happened to someone you know. These players are worth millions to the teams they play for, of course they are going to be protected, we spend a fortune on our own personal security they are just protecting their assets. South Africa has never experienced an event like the world cup before, the amount of tourists coming into the country will be staggering and they have no idea of the precautions we take automatically.
This is ridiculous10/22/2009 12:18 AM
The germans are just scared that the Jewish community in South Africa might want revenge and they using our crime rate as an excuse... (You see how ignorant and stupid the thing is that i just said?) Well thats exactly how ignorant and stupid the germans are being...
Bodie10/21/2009 11:33 PM
You people are forgetting about the Threat of Radical Islamic Somalis. As (rather) for South Africa not being for sissies, you folk seem to be quoting your hero, Malman. Nice company you keep I must say.

This is lank insulting actually to all of us... All i know is they are going to look like a bunch of complete wankers with their bproof vests on! Hope they get chirped for being a bunch of pussies.
Marcelo10/21/2009 7:51 PM
@Bee. I don't think so. The American players will play in an undisclosed and secured location protected by the Delta Farce, sorry Delta Force and the Blue Seals. At the same time US "Androids" controlled by remote control far away from the Pentagon will play the normal game all exposed to the South African public and the media as a diversion. I would like to apologise profusely to everyone who has the misfortune to read my idiotic comments. But then again stupid articles attract stupid comments
Jah10/21/2009 7:02 PM
What if they get shot in the face?
Bee10/21/2009 6:29 PM
Wow this is ridiculous! Shouldn't they supply them with helmets as well?
Marcelo10/21/2009 6:06 PM
If the German Football Association goes to great lengths to protect their players, imagine what the US Football Association will do to protect their American players like coming to RSA with the US army, CIA, Secret Service, invading RSA to set up a no-fly militarised zone thoughout the whole of RSA. If that happens there will no more crime but unfortunately we may have intercontinental missiles pointed at us from North Korea and Iran and that I'm afraid we may have a Nuclear Problem Child! .Ja right!!
Vernon10/21/2009 5:45 PM

Is it April Fools Day already? We hosted numerios succesfull tourny's this year. Without any problems. We had a friend here from England for the BI Lions tour. He said we have the most wonderfull country he ever visited. With the greatest lifestyle. Just don't be stupid where you go. They always tell the tourist don't stand out. Well German Players you sure gonna stand out!!!!
Michelle10/21/2009 5:39 PM
Every country and city has its bad areas where you are warned not to venture into but in South Africa crime is at every street corner, even in nice neighbourhoods. I guess Germany is just thinking ahead because they are worried that there will be no budget left for security for 2010 because our dear Security and Safety Minister has spent it all on luxury hotel accommodations whilst he ponders what must be done with the crime rate in SA.
Spiderman10/21/2009 5:21 PM
Never mind leaving the hotel. Watch your back while in the hotel. A couple in their eighties were attacked in their own bed by five armed thugs who proceeded to rough them up and stab the lady in her hand when she tried to protect her ill husband. They stole what they could and left an old couple traumatised. This goes on every night and day and you all you can say is that SA is not for sissies. Nice attitude until it happens to you. Be careful. Very careful.
Tman10/21/2009 5:20 PM
Great, i hope those bullet proofs help on the pitch as well. While on it, please do some research to see how the vest will affect the flow of blood and movement of muscle i.e. streching and relaxing. I bet they are going to have a long 90 minutes on the pitch.
jackey10/21/2009 5:16 PM
And while they at it, They should scan their training ground's for any landmines and should make there hotel windows bulletproof too !!
jackey10/21/2009 5:13 PM
Are they suppose to be going to SA (South Afghanistan) ???Then I guess they gear is appropiate but other then that can they also import all there cars with bullet proof armour, and then we will all be just as paranoid...Idiotic gemans !!!!
Fingers Skabenga10/21/2009 5:09 PM
Cool! Those European quality bullet-proof vests are worth a fortune on the streets of Jozi. We'll make a killing flogging them to small-time local politicians once we've got the Kraut blood off them ...
milktert10/21/2009 5:07 PM
@ Maths genius. I agree that most (heinous) crimes are rural but I question your 89% "social crime" stat. Regarding previous international sports events do you truly believe that the '95 RWC and '03 CWC were anywhere NEAR the scale of the FWC? Fact is that the number tourists coming in for 2010 will be an order or two of magnitude higher than those of '95 and '03. Bear in mind also that '03 was a cricket world cup and that sport is followed fervently in maybe 5/6 countries around the world. In '95, rugby was not even professional yet so there were not hoards of fans coming in and, oh yes, we still had a sh*t hot police force. Mark my words, some naive tourist is going to get offed for thinking they could go and enjoy the beauty of SA in some far flung place like Bisho.
taxidermist10/21/2009 5:05 PM
I'd imagine these guys have huge life insurance covers. No doubt the over cautious response is to protect everyones interest, including club buy-out investments - understandable if you have money tied up in an living asset. I'd say we even lucky to be hosting this callibre of player.

Crime is real. Look at the Fournos attack during a peaceful Sunday morning breakfast. Look at the med student killed a few weeks ago. It happens so unexpectadly, so unfairly. We have to be prepared and take precautions, so do the German football team. These bastards wouldn't care about shooting a Ronaldo for a cell phone. Shoot to kill criminals is vital. Before I have the anti shooting brigade giving obscene comments, I don't advocate random, unbridled shooting. If a criminal is armed and intending to use the weapon, he must be shot without hesitation......otherwise sooner or later an innocent life will be taken by the bastard. Sick of these hooligans stealing our oxygen.
Maths genius 10/21/2009 4:47 PM
Milktert - come now. When last did you hear about a tourist being murdered in RSA? It has not happened at one of the major sporting events. Our blood thirsty newspapers are dying for it to happen so we would most certainly have heard about it. The murder stats are shocking but 89% are social contact crimes (i.e. attacker knows his victim) and 90% occur in poor or rural areas. Hence the reason why tourists are in fact SAFE in RSA. Come on - time to get excited about what will be a wonderful time in an amazing country.
Xikoxa10/21/2009 4:47 PM
This is a great measure. Our country is full of blood, people killing families for two laptops...no guys....please. I'm black and what the Germans are doing has nothing to do with race.....I bought a house but I feel like I've been sentenced to life in prison. No air to breath coz I can't go outside, they will shoot me and take my cell phone and laptop.....so please they are being real.....
Ed10/21/2009 4:46 PM
Anyone of you who thinks they are crazy and that bulletproof vests are not nessesary, are living with caps over their eyes and have accepted the levels of crime- or you think being hijacked, raped and shot at is OK. You must all wake up. The world is scared to visit SA, and with reason. the crime levels are outragous and our government is doing nothing about it, accept buy nice Beemers..

They really don't need to worry if the "shooters" in Bafana Bafana are anything to go by the criminals would probably miss anyway....although the people sitting in row ZZ to the left and right of the goalmouth might be in mortal peril.
TheEditor10/21/2009 4:26 PM
I fully agree with some of your comments. The chances of you being killed while sleeping in your bed, or hi-jacked is much higher now than it was a couple of years ago. I also lock myself up in my own house with trellidoors, beams and ADT. We can never take our live for granted if you stay in SA!!
S.E Usadolo10/21/2009 4:22 PM
The German's fear is real! The criminals here will stop at nothing in getting their share from the world cup. This is a perfect indication of how the outside world views the crime situation in South Africa. The government should wake up!
Princes of Peril10/21/2009 4:22 PM
Put in contrast these prima donnas with the heir to the throne of Great Britain, who came here with his brother to do a dirt-bike endurance trip for charity. I met some of the ous who took William and Harry on game drives and went for beers with them at a local pub. They seemed to have got through the experience unscathed in t-shirts and jeans.
milktert10/21/2009 4:21 PM
Do the maths people. We currently have 50 confirmed murders a day. SA Tourism is expecting 480000 tourists arriving in SA over that month. That means a more or less 1% increase in SA's population during that period which means 50.5 murders per day; 50 Saffers and half a tourist. Multiply that over 30 days and we can expect 15 dead tourists during the World Cup. Even if my numbers are 50% out, it's at least 7 dead tourists. Personally I'm hoping this will play out so that the rest of the world can see what happens when you hand a country over to blood thirsty savages.

Good idea -first thing I do when I hear a noise or my alarm goes off is put on my vest. Then I grab my firearm and wait for the security company. Better safe than sorry. If they make any attempt to get at me they are going to face a hail of lead. If i need to assist the security guys then Im ready. Everyone should own one.
Shane10/21/2009 4:10 PM
I suggest Ballack wears a mask....and blends in with the rest of us SA'ns.... i.e. rather blend in ..... P.S: he is over the hill already, he should rather be a spectator....
germandude2510/21/2009 4:09 PM
@aubrey masina Playing the race card again are we? So how many germans do you know personaly?
Tshepo10/21/2009 4:08 PM
they might as well wear them in the field of play...Gees!, these guys, they make me sick to my stomach...they should do us a favour and stay in Germany for all we care, plus they play boring football...whether they like it or no, the WC is coming to a developing nation, and the next one thereafter to another developing nation ...
beetroot10/21/2009 4:08 PM
FORGOT THE HELMETS, DIDN'T THEY?
KOBUS10/21/2009 4:08 PM
Have you guys seen how ridiculously normal German tourists in SA are often dressed? A bulletproof vest will look pretty stylish next to that! Hhehehe.
Hans10/21/2009 4:08 PM
Well what do you expect them to wear for protection!!!
Bafana10/21/2009 4:06 PM
Let them TALK about the: XENOPHOBIA Attacks in Germany!!! Africans are Attacked in Germany, during these Campaigns. I wont support Germany!!!
Romulus10/21/2009 4:04 PM
South Africans have put on blinkers to survive from day to day, the rest of the world has not. What you now accept as the norm...is ridiculous!. Face up..the country will never get better, until the ANC is replaced with a political party that has the interest of all the people at heart....and that will not happen in our lifetime..if ever....so you either have to fight for your country or leave.
Handogg10/21/2009 4:04 PM

I blame the prawns.10/21/2009 4:03 PM
I blame the prawns personally
Bandile10/21/2009 4:03 PM
Didn't we host the IPL cricket, Lions Tour and Confed Cup this year??? I don't recall any of the sports personalities wearing bullet proofs and making balderdash statements...What is so special about Ballack and German entourage that Kaka, Robinho and others that have been to our country didn't need this type of security?
TJOPPIE10/21/2009 4:02 PM
@somedude. You are correct. In this country we have forgotten that life is precious. Although I do believe bulletproof vests are ridiculous, the SWC will be a hunting ground for the criminals next year.
Sandile10/21/2009 4:01 PM
No this is crazy!
rob10/21/2009 4:01 PM
SA is the worst country in the world. Murder and rape happens with one of the highest frequencies in the world. I cannot believe SA even got the WC. It should be taken away. We will all be murdered in our beds. I hate this country, it is a savage hell-hole
katey10/21/2009 4:00 PM
The article says that Spahn (the security guy) will be visiting SA next week for 4 days to check out security. I wonder if he will be wearing a bullet proof vest????? He's probably hyping up his security concerns so that his company gets the contract....often there's an agenda. This one unfortunately just sparks alarm and harms our country's reputation. Now I wish some sharp journalist will check if this guy's wearing that vest...maybe I'm wrong, but i think this is ridiculous. Did Manchester United players wear vests last time - where any of them shot? Sure, crimes bad, but these guys hang out in safe areas and are surrounded by security personall..
L10/21/2009 4:00 PM
Only in South Africa!
Wade10/21/2009 3:59 PM
BaySecur (the German Security Company in Germany who advise this ridiculous info on SA) are only making sure that they get the "job" of looking after the German Football Federation. Once again, a greedy corporation just trying to make money out of the 2010 World Cup. Lets not mention the war ..... or should I say both wars that the Germans lost .... apparently they still scared! Viva SA! Viva!
aubrey masina10/21/2009 3:58 PM
Interesting. These blokes finished their stadia less than a week before the WC kick-off in 2006. They even warned a lot of people not to venture in other areas of Berlin because of skin heads. The IPL was here in RSA, arranged at short notice with no bad incident(s) and the vedict is there for every one to see! No bullte proof vest, nogal. Germans are racists and we all know it! Ask Namibian (Hereros) they know better!
jenni10/21/2009 3:57 PM
Not surprised, after all I live in a prison, so what is the difference? Just now we will all probably have to walk around with bullet proof garments. Perhaps our government should take note of what other countries think of the crime in this country and may be do something about it and not just for 2010!!!
nicci10/21/2009 3:57 PM
How the mighty have fallen! LOL!!!! From wanting to rule the world to hiding in a vest that won't even help. Here they shoot with AK47's. Your vests will maybe start a new fashion trend? OMG, how ridiculous................... Seriously, we have a huge crime problem, and the more light is shown on it, the better. Hope it blinds all the corrupt politicians/cops/tsotsi's straight to jail. Wishful thinking......... Yeah I know
L_M10/21/2009 3:56 PM
So it's okay for every ANC Politician in South Africa to drive a R1M BMW's for security concerns, drive around with blue light brigades packed with body guards shooting at innocent civilians, but it's NOT OK for the Germans to say they need to take extra security precautions during their trip here? Bunch of hypocrits! I for one would share a much bigger tear if Ballas was shot then Blade.
Danny10/21/2009 3:55 PM
@Dr Desmond Fakema You are so right! If they didn't rape africa for so long there wouldn't be so much crime, or tv's, or soccer, or cars or buildings or cities or guns or computers or ANYTHING you all love so much and claim to be 'yours'...
Sandza10/21/2009 3:54 PM
Where did you get your stats, Mike? They are so wrong. Stop listening to people's conversations in a bar and do your own research.
Ellen10/21/2009 3:54 PM
.....but what if they aim for the head????
game10/21/2009 3:53 PM
very wise of the Germans, SA is a dangerous place. naysayers are simply inured to the unacceptably high crime rates.
John10/21/2009 3:53 PM
Balack must be protected at all cost, even if it entail the whole SA Air Force - all three our airplanes. He is one hunk of a man! Njammies! And while we're at it Ronaldo, that nice Argintine... and all the other pretty young things as well - they need the best service we can provide. Just to think they are going to run around my own town, makes me all excited!
Lihle10/21/2009 3:53 PM
Cmn we just had the confed... Germans... shouldnt they worry about the cup? I mean German football is dead no offence.. Will Spain and Brazl need bullet proof as well...
NvV10/21/2009 3:52 PM
Ha ha you say. Big Joke. How deep is your head buried in the ground? Have you become so blinded by you ignorance that this kind of reporting seems unrealistic and stupid. Maybe to you it is but the rest of the world, your customers for 2010, see it differently. It’s still a long way before the actual fun begins but I love the fact that the world’s focus is slowly turning its attention to SA. What can of worms will they discover digging behind the obvious bravado and arrogance. Fools. Have a laugh but watch this space.
Elviswansn'there10/21/2009 3:51 PM
Germany bring their army? Frik yeah! it'll be world war 3! Dr Desmond Fakema, you think we caused crime? I'd like to see the mind control syrum that us Europeans have. Crime is every where and sure we stole resources but we didn't give anyone a handbook on how to become a criminal. Crime is human nature and so is justice, but we as South Africans are out numbered by the people that listen to that instinct.
Rob10/21/2009 3:51 PM
HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Connie10/21/2009 3:50 PM
I totally agree with GeePMB - South Africa has very successfully hosted the Cricket and Rugby World Cup, and I can't remember any of the teams wearing bullet-proof vests! I'm originally from Germany, and I think this is totally unnecessary (and stupid)! I keep telling everyone that they should take anything they hear about SA abroad with a grain of salt. (but then my husband's 90+ great-aunt thinks that we have lions and hyaenas living in our back yard). However, both sets of parents have visited SA numerous times, as have friends, and they all felt very safe here!
Alan10/21/2009 3:50 PM
That should work well when some muggers knifes a player for his medal!
Connie10/21/2009 3:48 PM

I think no one is factoring in "social murders" like cop killer Marius van der Westhuizen who killed his kids, etc, etc. "Between two-thirds and three-quarters of murders in this country are social in nature," deputy commissioner Chris de Kock told a media briefing in Cape Town. "They occur between friends, acquaintances, family members," he added.
Sandza10/21/2009 3:46 PM
lol... are they also going to put on helmets. This dude is ridiculous, security is always beefed up around important guests in RSA. Give me one incident where an international sportsman was shot at, it does not happen even in the cape flats. Sportsman do visit this country and conduct coaching clinics in the townships, incidence free.
Dries10/21/2009 3:43 PM
How can they say that there is little chance of only using local people as guards. These guys must also use only South African guards, they must also apply Employment Equity when choosing their guards. If not they are obviously racist. Must be fun walking around in a bullet proof vest? What must spectators do?
ttt10/21/2009 3:42 PM
A bit theatrical but since each player is worth a lot to the DFB, a bulletproof vest might be a good investment. People are killed for nothing every day @weza; If they want to yes, but if they don't want to, they beat up old grannies and rape them. Very friendly people indeed. @khau: You should be worried, I'm coming for you ...
Julius10/21/2009 3:42 PM
Yeah, stupid germans. They dont have brain. the cars they build were invented by south africans. this is why i say only our people must drive mercedes and bmw. because if there is an accident it will be because one of our people drove the car. but no shame. and if there is no accident we can be proud of our own people.
KAB10/21/2009 3:39 PM
They are going overboard now. I know we have a problem with crime but not like that. SA have had so many Foreign reams(Rugby, Cricket Soccer) this was never a problem. We even had the USA team not so long ago and did not have this kind of negativity. Some third forces are out to ruin our country
PMC10/21/2009 3:38 PM
Good for them........
Buffalotiger10/21/2009 3:38 PM
Somedude is quite right - SA still has the worst violent crime rates in the world, and tourists are far more likley to getmugged, attacked or killed here than anywhere else in the world. SA streets are dangerous, and for all of you naive indigenous, GROW UP!!!! The Germans have got it right.
Samantha10/21/2009 3:37 PM
I think they would need ear plugs as the vuvuzela is more harmful
Jack10/21/2009 3:36 PM
Are the Germans arming up for another World (Cup/ War) again... Well they should be proud of themeselves hey.... Surely they'll get it right this time... not....maybe... This is South Africa not a bullet proof war zone Hope they enjoy their protected stay ... Germans!
Donovan10/21/2009 3:35 PM
I think it is correct we have citizens shooting wildly like in the wild wild west, not only do we have to worry about the criminals but now public members who think that have also the right to shoot to kill anywhere anytime! I say not only bullet proof vests, include armour plated cars, 20 personal security guards (just like this governments ministers have currently) and perhaps through in a few American Black hawks in for extra measures, because lets face it, South Africa is unprepared for next year the criminals are going to get richer and richer!
Tandi10/21/2009 3:35 PM
Hope they are going to bring bullet proof helmets with them, headshots are the best way to kill someone SA criminals don’t shoot to injure you.
Marc10/21/2009 3:34 PM
They best leave their wives, girlfriends and children at home too, since they may be raped, hijacked etc etc. Or of they do bring them, fit them with chastity belts! Well at least us Saffers will get a break from crime while the world cup is on since the tourists will be easy targets!
darkwing10/21/2009 3:34 PM
It's just going to take one of these prominent soccer players to be mugged or shot, for instance Renaldo, for the world to stop coming here. Have you forgotten that we rely on tourism and will do so more and more in future? It just shows what image we have in the outside world.
Hunter10/21/2009 3:33 PM
Africa is not for sissies...
MikeMike10/21/2009 3:33 PM
This is funny no matter which way you look at it but, what is even funnier to think, this is how the world sees SA and will be seen for a LOOONG time to come.
steve10/21/2009 3:32 PM
What do we expect when our own parliment is full of criminals? Travelgate, arms deals, Selebi befriends drug dealer, Shabir, Chippy, Winnie, ministerial bling beamers, five star hotels, shoot to kill, 50+ murders a day, a rape every 25 minutes, JZ's blue light brigade kills kid in Ulundi, roads + power + rail infrastructure failure, unionised defense force storms Union Buildings.... - wake up, we are a mickey mouse, 3rd world, banana republic.....
Bye10/21/2009 3:31 PM
I won't be in SA for 2010. The crime bonanza will be so overwhelming that I'd rather watch from a safe distance. Certainly our team won't be worth watching. Maybe I'll even stay there!
Wendy10/21/2009 3:30 PM
With the crime rate so high in SA, I do not blame ANY team for wanting to take extra measures to protect their players. Yes, there hasn't been any incident during other World Cups, but rather safe than sorry!!! It is sad though, that SA is viewed this way by other countries, hopefully the World Cup goes off well, and we can all show the world what a wonderful country SA is, and try and change their perception. To all the moaners out there, try and see it from their point of view - they are going on what is broadcast on the news, you cannot fault them at just wanting to be safe!!
Raymond10/21/2009 3:29 PM
How silly of the Germans. Don't they know that they will be robbed of their bullet proof vests?
carol10/21/2009 3:27 PM
LOL...........If they are really worried about safety, give them bullet proof helmets, and remember the sunscreen
jam10/21/2009 3:27 PM

DADDYKAY10/21/2009 3:24 PM

Just dont get shot in the head!!!
Hein10/21/2009 3:23 PM
They red the Beeld newspaper and decided on bulletproof vests. Not a bad idea. They are not used getting shot at.
beetle10/21/2009 3:23 PM
Why does the term "soccer prima donnas" spring to mind? I agree with the prvious comments about the Federation Cup and Rugby Worl Cup that well. I thought these Germans were more intelligent.
Jan @ Nic10/21/2009 3:22 PM

Liza10/21/2009 3:20 PM
DEUTSCHLAND ÜBER ALLES!!!
jedi10/21/2009 3:20 PM
People this is sad having a reputation like this is not what builds investor confidence and promotes economic growth. With things like this it is only going to take one ignorant foreigner to get mugged or worse and South Africa’s reputation will be completely shot to shit by the creative press. And PS Dr Desmond Fakema, if we did not bring our evil technology to this country you would probably still be herding cattle in your buck skin so dot get smart even if you are a real doctor.
Sech10/21/2009 3:19 PM
ha ha! British and Irish lions were in SA, Y they didn't wear bullet proof vests? World cup will b hosted in SA not Afganistan.
Peché Africa10/21/2009 3:18 PM
This might sound ridiculous but the truth is yes better wear a bullet proof vest in South Africa. We know what a mess our country is in, you cant evens go to the mall and not think of getting robbed anymore.
Sebastian10/21/2009 3:18 PM
Go for the head comrades. I think there are snipers out there who can overried the bulletproof. Germans very paranoid i must say. We had multiple world class sporting events no bloodshed. WAKE UP WORLD WAR CREATING EXPERTS!!!!
Stupidity10/21/2009 3:18 PM
I though no one will go lower than suffer. This is a free country; you can wear anything you want. What I don’t understand is why are they bragging now? If you want to wear bullet proof wear it and stop bragging. Some people here are also retarded, what do you understand on this? How many international or local players were shot in Mzantsi? None!!
Jan Boland10/21/2009 3:18 PM
@ Dr Desmond Fakema that said on 10/21/2009 at 2:49 PM Ag Please! .... Let’s not forget if it was not for Europe raping our continent for centuries we would not have half the crime today. You must be a traditional healer or something similar ... a Dr has brains and could not possibly blame the current crime problem on colonialism but squarely on the ANC government that has failed this country miserably! Or was that an feeble attempt at being humorous?
understandable10/21/2009 3:17 PM
Lets not forget that when the Proteas tour Pakistan or India they are usually escorted by members of the Pakistani or Indian army. I'm pretty sure the DFB does not make decisions like this without doing some research (SA crime stats). Furthermore, what if they did not take these types of precautions and one of their players did end up being shot. They would get into some serious trouble with the german government for not doing everything necessary to ensure the safety of their players
milktert10/21/2009 3:17 PM

Nic10/21/2009 3:14 PM
Hahaha!! Stupid Germans!! Please rather do us a favour and stay in Germany! Although our crime rate is high SA ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!
Kuas10/21/2009 3:14 PM
bla bla bla..Yes SA is unsafe, and thats why many have security guards in their complexes..and crime is an issue and the fat politicians need to start dealing with that as wishing it will go away does not help!!!
Mike10/21/2009 3:13 PM
Don't think it is stupid at all, considering more people are killed in SA on a yearly basis then in Iraq.
Thembalabantubonke10/21/2009 3:12 PM
Easiest and cheapest ways for the Germans is to lose all their games, and there will be no need for extra security
Bob Bitchin10/21/2009 3:11 PM
Our local so-called "VIP's" dont move anywhere without their armed protection squads - who is sending the wrong message? I see we achieved a pitiful ranking of 128 (out of 133 countries surveyed) in the world in terms of Safety & Security - Pakistan is 132 and Nigeria 133. This government needs to wake up and soon!
Joe10/21/2009 3:11 PM
LOL@Dr Desmond Fakema --- Of course you wouldn't be playing Eurocentric sports like soccer either. Or maybe we should blame the fish for crawling out of the sea 400 million years ago and evolving into people. If they had just stayed in the water there would no crime at all. Not on land anyway.
nic10/21/2009 3:10 PM
Michael Ballack? Who's that....? :)
Freddy10/21/2009 3:10 PM
Why bother coming to SA. Let them remain in Germany and we continue enjoying our contry. SA don't have lunatics who kills randomly like American school kids.

Tshekedi10/21/2009 3:07 PM
Am i suprised? NO! Anyway the poor germans are welcome to visit any part of the country while they are here for the world cup. there are no-go areas for others like we witnessed in germany a few years ago! Oups! they will eat a humble pie when they see the humility and acceptance of others by the millions of the rainbow children. surely no need for b-proofs, but if it makes them happy let them have them! its always good to prepare well for war when going into one - they no better than all of us! Oups!
haha10/21/2009 3:07 PM
is the world cup going to be the same as the confed cup? 1000's of tickets given away for free to the poor. Just to fill the stands? bwhahaha VIVA AFRICA! with a K
fern @ kobus10/21/2009 3:06 PM
No its not fool. Stop being so gleeful.
Gerhard10/21/2009 3:05 PM
Mnnn I would propose they buy the SA made bullet proof vest. I understand our bullet proof vests are the best, thats why the British soldiers going off to Afghanistan buys them, in preference over the ones the British army dishes out...The company in SA making them have had the best testing ground for their vests, being central Jo'Burg after 7 PM... much more hair raising than the Taliban in Afghanistan...
katman10/21/2009 3:05 PM
Well, they'll struggle to win this World Cup wearing bullet proof vests.
LEBO10/21/2009 3:05 PM
They might as well stay in Germany, we can have a world cup without them.
Thozi10/21/2009 3:05 PM
Bullet proof??? Is this man sane??? I swear to God and my ancestors that something is not right in his head ... there are "things" in his head
jb10/21/2009 3:04 PM
after the WC, the robbers are going to run around with these jackets and protect them when going into a robbery. Now we need to aim for the face.
thato10/21/2009 3:04 PM
I don't blame them. This country's crime levels are so high that the problem actually defeats us all.
manfredo10/21/2009 3:03 PM
Why are some of your readers upset about these news? Have you ever thought about our OWN celebrities, especially politicians, halfbread and baby politicians (Lollipop Malema etc) who dont even stay in 5 Star hotels in CPT and DBN alone but with their own body guards (though one is the top SA policeman) ? Do they trust the situation here ? Wake up ! We want to stage the biggest show on earth! That the world looks at this situation here and is well informed - you wonder ? Read everyday's papers and look at the awful crime record ! Not for Sissies ? Go back into your laager!
Leslie10/21/2009 3:01 PM
I don't know what people are doing to our country with this bad advertising. Try and be more positive and enjoy the world cup. South Africa is 1 of 2 countries lucky enough to have had all 3 world cups....... Doesn't that count for something?
Yol10/21/2009 3:00 PM
Bwahahahahahahaha! Sjoe, but the Germans are really not the brightest bunch are they.
milktert10/21/2009 3:00 PM
Do the maths people. We currently have 50 confirmed murders a day. SA Tourism is expecting 480000 tourists arriving in SA over that month. That means a more or less 1% increase in SA's population during that period which means 50.5 murders per day; 50 Saffers and half a tourist. Multiply that over 30 days and we can expect 15 dead tourists during the World Cup. Even if my numbers are 50% out, it's at least 7 dead tourists. Personally I'm hoping this will play out so that the rest of the world can see what happens when you hand a country over to blood thirsty savages.
Piet10/21/2009 2:59 PM

Welcome to Prawn country. District 9
somedude10/21/2009 2:57 PM
You people thinking this is bull, poor you. You have forgotten that life is precious and that some countries actually care about their people. We in SA is so lost and disconnected with the pain and suffering of our innocent fellow citizens we just look the other way and believe we are safe because we fear the reality of - life is dirt cheap in SA, people get killed like flies here, for R50 and a cellphone.
Showswhatothersthinkofyou10/21/2009 2:57 PM
That just shows what the international community think of SA. Can you really blame them ? Shoot to kill should be applied more readily to solve the problem which is SA
Zuntino10/21/2009 2:56 PM
ha ha! That's funny shit, I never knew the germans were such fags... well you can thank the ANC and their very able MENESTAS for this reputation... what a joke, how embarrasing....
jonnie10/21/2009 2:56 PM
Why not hire professional hunters to protect the players from elephants and lions while they are at it?
bombay10/21/2009 2:55 PM
No we don't have any problem with the vests given to players, we are interested in wallets, phones, ipods and ya bags if u can put tracker on those then u have won but we are satisfied with whatever you doing now..
Glock 22 10/21/2009 2:55 PM
I dont blame them. You get killed for a cell phone doesnt matter where you come from.
kolobe10/21/2009 2:55 PM
maybe this is a hoax, doesnt make sense.we just had the confed and non was wearing a bulletproof. the crime is bad but this is lunatic.who comes up with such recommendations?this is a definite sabotage.let them stay in germany

There's no Adolf Hitler in South Africa. They must relax -- or stay at home.
Reality is10/21/2009 2:54 PM
It is simple, whether we like it or not. The world knows how high our crime rates are. We need 200,000 extra policemen to fight crime.
rbgguy10/21/2009 2:54 PM
Why don't they bring an SS brigade too? This is more fuel for sour expats to gloat about how we are in a civil war and all that crap. Shame
J Gal 10/21/2009 2:53 PM
This is a BS really everywhere in the world there is crime SA isnt the worst. Like it or not some people who commit crime are not even South Africans
sunny10/21/2009 2:53 PM
Dumb....we have had two world cups here with no incident. Bullet proof vests is taking it a bit too far...
Choppa10/21/2009 2:51 PM
Dawn wa Lesele: I don't blame them either; this is just to 'help' avoid your 'brothers' from doing what they do per norm, tradition and nature. Trusting their own security intelligence above ours is a very sensible and viable move. There's a big difference between the two parties (emphasis on 'intelligence').
Mark10/21/2009 2:51 PM
While you are at it i suggest packing your Lion repellent, torch with plenty of batteries and a Hyena proof tent!

They might as well take a detour to Iraq
Gerhard10/21/2009 2:50 PM
Wake up South Africa - this is what foreigners think of our beloved country. Who can blame them? We have the 2nd highest crime rate in the world behind the drug ridden Colombia! I foresee a lot less visitors for 2010 than expected by our "competent" goverment.
Dr Desmond Fakema10/21/2009 2:49 PM
Ag Please! Why don’t they rather stay home! Pathetic is all I can say! Typical Paranoid Germans. Let’s not forget if it was not for Europe raping our continent for centuries we would not have half the crime today.
weza10/21/2009 2:48 PM
What a stupid idea, South Africans are very friendly and warm.
SAFA Spokesperson10/21/2009 2:48 PM
Are they still talking about security guards? USA has confirmed with us that they will withdraw 5000 member army force from Iraq & Afghanistan to be accompanied by their fighter jets to South Africa next year for the WC so that their players can get maximum security.
RazMaTaz10/21/2009 2:47 PM
WTF... and these are the guys who started two world wars and they think we are a dangerous country!
GuviJ10/21/2009 2:46 PM
This is no joke. Wake up SA, this is the way the world view us! We need to change this perception, 2010 is our best (only) chance.
JACO BOTHA10/21/2009 2:46 PM
Africa is a tough country!!!!!!
Sello10/21/2009 2:46 PM
I wonder why we have not yet had a shooting incident on guests during the rugby world cup, football confederations cup, cricket world cup, ICC trophy and many more. Having said so, I dont necessarily deny the crime problem.
steve10/21/2009 2:46 PM
Classic ... way to funny ... i cant believe people think like this ...oh well im sur ethe players themselves wont want a bullet proof vest effecting their fashion statement.. after all they are going to wanna look there best for the SA women ...
sjert10/21/2009 2:46 PM
I agree, if anything they should fear the british football holligans!
Thabo10/21/2009 2:45 PM
Viva Germany. At least they know what they are in for, but what about the poor fans walking around all blissfully. Can't wait for the WC it's going to be open season for the criminals.
xp10/21/2009 2:45 PM
Perhaps they read the incident with Bianca Warburton and realised this country is finished
James10/21/2009 2:45 PM
Proof that the 1st world also thinks the SA 'leadership' are a bunch of incompetent crooks. I have not met one person that is not interested in visiting SA, but I have also met very few that will actually do it, due to the concerns they have about personal safety. We are forced to live with it, but that does not make it normal.
Crap10/21/2009 2:44 PM
Why dont you just bring the whole German Army to escort ur german assess around Gauteng WTF u on about
C'mon!10/21/2009 2:43 PM
O C'MON!!!!! you guys cant be serious...
Vukani10/21/2009 2:43 PM
This is just the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. Bullet proof vests?? Couped up as much as possible in their hotels?? What message does this sent to the world, that the majority of South Africans are criminals?? Mind you there is probably nothing as funny as a paranoid tourist, especially one wearing a bullet proof. The real crime here is looking ridiculous!
Sinethemba Madlokazi10/21/2009 2:42 PM
That is a wise thing to do to protect their players and every one who the part of the Germany team. The problem that I have with this is that, did they use bullet proofs in the previous world cups? If no, that will clear shows that they don't have faith on us to make this world cup successfull. All in all for their safety that will be benificial, but for our image as South Africans that will not be beneficial in terms of our preparation and being organised............
OGIES10/21/2009 2:41 PM
what a reputation we have !! resulting to bullet proof vests and bodyguards for soccer players . It is also recomended that the guys wear ear protection for noise polution from the so called Vuvuvela?? poluters

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaa, this is one of the dumbest things I've heard coming out of this fokken foreigners. What's next, their own special toilet paper?

Aim for the face!
fern10/21/2009 2:35 PM
This is totally ridiculous. Stupid Germans
Gavin10/21/2009 2:32 PM
Any chance we can ask them to leave their security team behind in SA after the world cup to look after the rest of us?
GeePMB10/21/2009 2:30 PM
PATHETIC... yes we have a high crime rate but for heaven sake, this is ridiculous. Does DFB think every South African walks around in bullet proof vests. By all means have a high level of security as is becoming of such an event but stop being so melodramatic. We have had both Cricket and Rugby World cup tournaments here and our security has been world class and incidents have been kept to a minimum and certainly no players have been shot! The players have more chance of beeing attacked by their own fans if they play badly.
Theo10/21/2009 2:27 PM
LOL!
KOBUS10/21/2009 2:24 PM
LOL, this is pretty funny, but I guess in a country with tens of thousands of shooting incidents each year, it's understandable...
Mike10/21/2009 2:23 PM
Welcome to SA
