Cape Town – The leading FIFA-ranked Brazilians hog Sport24 readers’ choice as likeliest winners of the World Cup from the remaining eight teams in the competition.
But it is not a massively clear-cut thing: there is also string sentiment in favour of Argentina and Germany, who meet in one of the most attractive of the quarter-finals at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.
Our poll this week, asking the straight-forward question “Who will win the SWC out of the remaining eight teams?” attracted more than 6 000 voters. And those were the trio of established giants to earn greatest confidence.
Brazil, who play Holland in Port Elizabeth in the first quarter-final on Friday, earned 27% of our readers’ votes.
But Argentina were not far behind with 21%, meaning also exactly half of respondents fancy a South American winner in the Soccer City showpiece on July 11 – there was also a minor, 3% sentiment in favour of Uruguay.
The surprise packages, who broke Bafana hearts with a 3-0 thumping of the hosts in the Group stage at Loftus, play Africa’s remaining hope Ghana in the late game on Friday.
At least support for the West Africans runs into double figures: 10% of readers were prepared to stick their necks out in favour of the lowest-ranked team (32nd going into the World Cup) of the remaining bunch.
The Brazil-Holland shapes up as an intriguing one, but the Dutch could still only command 11% confidence to go all the way.
Similarly, Spain’s status as European champions has not hugely impressed readers, who limit their prospects to a 12% tally of the votes.
And the laugh is on all of us if Paraguay, ranked 31st and never having got this far, sensationally snatch the title – they were the only side – not to get any support at all!
Indeed, if you have somehow tipped a Uruguay-Paraguay final with the bookmakers, who are clearly set to make a killing if it comes to that.
