Johannesburg – Bafana Bafana star Benni McCarthy – who is married – was left out of the final World Cup team after he apparently entertained women in the early hours of the morning in his luxury hotel room in Sandton.

This was also the reason why goalkeeper Rowen Fernandes was cut from the team.

The scandal follows another in sporting circles after it was revealed on Friday that Springbok lock Andries Bekker had been cheating on his wife of two years, Pioni, with a fourth-year student in Cape Town.

Sources in the Bafana camp told City Press that McCarthy and Fernandes were apparently entertaining women at 04:00 on Thursday morning at their hotel.

Coach Carlos Parreira was furious and immediately decided to cut the two from the team after security showed him CCTV tapes of McCarthy and Fernandes taking the women up to the room.

The incident took place shortly after the South African team’s pen-ultimate practice match (before the final team was announced) against Colombia.

It had been believed until now that McCarthy had been left out of the team because he was overweight and unfit.

Several sources, including a top soccer official and a hotel staff member who wanted to remain anonymous, confirmed the events.

Fernandes initially denied the report and McCarthy could not be reached for comment.

descipline at this stage is of paramount importance. when they say that you have to be dedicated to your country they do not mean in the soccer field only but also outside the pitch. they have themselves to BLAME

Congrats, keep it up, were are all those people who were talking negative things about Bafana Bafana ? I am surprised today to find that not even a one person is negative about Bafanas. I like this, you guys made my day.
STILL NOT GOOD ENOUGH REASON6/7/2010 5:17 PM
If that's the reason why Benni was left out then it's a blunder on the coach-IIT'S NOT BENNI'S FIDELITY WE WANT BUT HIS SOCCER SKILLS. The strikers that are in the team may deliver loyalty to their partners but will they deliver goals and good perfomance?
Concerned6/7/2010 4:11 PM
Ag jinne, there you guys go again believing everything you read. You should know the Parreira does not select the team and that he is only a puppet. ask any of the previous coaches and they will verify this.....I did.

About time,Benny was too big headed,we have lots of good players & the team will play well without him. A man who lacks self control will never come on right, fatty is married for pits sake!!

I say, good riddance! Even if Benny was Zizou (Zidane), the coach made the correct decision, even if may regret it in the end, I believe it was the best thing for the team and the country. Why Regret? I was and still one of those that believed that Benni shud hav been given a benifit of a doubt, due to his undoubted talent, arrogance/confidence on the field, experience, etc! Yes, even when he's shown the country the middle finger so many times. But, due to such developments, I believe it wud hav been counter productive. How's this for a scenario, cause as things seem 2 go so well without fatty, they can simply go horibly wrong as well? Assume, Mphela catches some kind of a cold (i.e. obviously gets injured), what are our options? Parker, lone striker? Oh please! Another factor as well, is that all these coaches favor a lone striker approach, but the problem is that, it's only fatty that can adapt his game play with his back to goal, a blind rat can see that! However, fatty put both his feet in his mouth and nobody really shud miss him, even those who felt he still had a role to play, like myself.

How can these morrons put their careers at risks by entertaining whores? Big Up Mr Carlos Parreira for showing them that they are not big than the national team. Real taste of their own medicine. They dug their own holes and they had to be buried just like that. The national team doesn't need pussy players but football players. This is the coach the nation needs. Mr Carlos Parreira you are the man. Thank you Sir for showing them who is the boss. Ayoba Mr Parreira Ayoba Bafana Bafana.

...And here we were feeling sorry for your exclusion from the squad. Even at a time like that, you still had the nerve to disrespect your team mates and coach. You will never learn Mr Mc Carthy will you???????
