Johannesburg – That’s better, Bafana Bafana!
After a disappointing goalless affair in the first training game against Volta Redonda on their Brazilian safari, the South African soccer team on Sunday won their second game at a canter.
It may have been against a reserve side from Fluminese, but Carlos Albert Parreira’s side won 8-0, with Siphiwe Tshabalala and Kermit Erasmus each scoring two goals.
Bafana had to wait for more than 40 minutes to take the lead, but with six goals in the second half were streets better than they were against Volta.
Parreira had also sent again sent on a brand new team in the second half in an effort to refine his search for a squad for the World Cup that takes place in June and July.
Only Lebohang Mokoena, who did not play in the first game, got game time against Fluminese at the expense of Thulasizwe Mbuyane.
Parreira was particularly impressed with Bafana’s passing and the amount of possession they enjoyed.
Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Tlou Segolela, Richard Henyekane and Daylon Claasen also beat the Fluminese goalkeeper.
Bafana have struggled to find the back of the net since Parreira took the reins again from Joel Santana.
South Africa were still involved in another training game against Boavista late last night.
It was played in the Graja Comary training complex, where the Brazilian national team trains.
South Africa also still have to play Cruzeiro and Botafago before their international friendly against Paraguay on March 31.
Botafago are currently joint leaders in Group B of the Brazilian club league and are coached by Santana.
“It was nice to be able to score so many goals for once, but we can still shift into a higher gear,” said Tshabalala.
“There is still a lot of hard work ahead and we are taking it game by game.”
Fluminese coach Ruy Reisinger was full of praise for the South Africans.
“It was a tough match and we just could not adapt to their way of playing,” he said.
