Rio de Janeiro - Six matches, four wins, two draws, 13 goals and no goals conceded!

That is Bafana Bafana’s scorecard at the end of the first leg of their training camp in Brazil. The squad has been in Rio de Janeiro for the past two weeks in preparation for the 2010 Fifa World Cup that starts in June. Next week they move their base came to Sao Paolo.

On Saturday (March 20) Bafana Bafana defeated Botafogo one nil at the Estadio Olimpico Joao Havelange, commonly known as the Engenhao Stadium. Botafogo used their reserve side as the first team was preparing to face fierce rivals Flamengo. In the Rio State league, Botafogo are second to Flamengo.

The match started with former Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana, who coaches Botafogo, going to greet the South African players in the dressing room. This was the first time Santana met the national team since he left South Africa.

Siphiwe Tshabalala scored the only goal of the match from a free kick; this was Tshabalala’s 4th goal in five matches.

“It was very hot and it was a tough match, but that’s good for us as we are getting some experience. I think we are well on track to be a well-oiled machine. Yes I am scoring goals but at the end of the day it’s a team effort and that’s what we are working towards – to be one unit so we can move forward together,” said Tshabalala.

“I have to say we have improved a lot, we are working very hard and the results are there for all to see. We are getting some much-needed experience and if we continue like this, we should be in tip-top condition in three months time,” added Katlego Mphela.

The match also saw defender Lucas Thwala featuring in the starting line-up for the first time since the start of the camp, relegating Innocent Mdledle to the bench. Thwala, just like Surprise Moriri, was playing his second match of the tour.

“We are getting better and better everyday, and we will reach our goal but as I have been saying it’s a process, something that we need to work on. But we have put in a lot of work in the last 13 days. I am very positive about where we are at the moment with our progress. Yes we have been winning games, but that is not the priority right now. We are achieving our goals of getting the team in the right frame of mind, getting shape, working on the identity, increasing speed and building confidence in the players. We are getting there slowly but surely. We are not ready yet for the tournament, especially because we still have to incorporate the overseas-based players in the side,” said Parreira.

The second leg of the Brazil camp starts in Sao Paolo on Monday when the team flies to the Traffic Training Centre where they will be based for the rest of the week.

There will be more practice matches before the team travel to Paraguay for an international friendly match against the hosts on Wednesday, 31 March.

How they lined up (subs in brackets):

Itumeleng Khune, Bongani Khumalo, Siyabonga Sangweni (Matthew Booth), Lucas Thwala (Innocent Mdledle), Siboniso Gaxa (Thabo Nthethe), Lance Davids (Daylon Claasen), Thanduyise Khuboni, Teko Modise (Reneilwe Letsholonyane), Thulasizwe Mbuyane (Surprise Moriri), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Franklin Cale), Katlego Mphela (Richard Henyekane).

Did not play: Moneeb Josephs, Siyanda Xulu, Andile Jali, Daine Klaite, Lebohang Mokoena, Gert Schalkwyk, Tlou Segolela and Thulani Serero.

I know in history of WC, there is never been a host country not going through the secnd round. Also there is never been a host country ranked number 90 in the world. Now add these two and see what will happen. My prayer is just that God might help us score atleast 1 goal, just 1 goal.. you knw why im praying for a goal, its because there are no chances in hell that we gonna win a game in the WC. France has got the Best players playing regularly in the best teams in the world. Same goes for Mexico.......( Vuvuzelas can't stand the Mexican Waves)....lol..... Uruguay once won the world cup.... All these teams we grouped with are on the top 20 in rankings. So please people, let us limit our dreams to just hoping to score just 1 goal ne. I love you all South Africans but not BB. These BB people and Safa are undermining my level of intelligence!!! This is our world cup, we should have given a local coach.........we know we are not playing to win a WC. we just there to make up for 32 teams needed for brazil to win a WC again. So there wont be any miracles there, its either u can do it or you can't. and we as SA we just can't do it. Not before , not Now , Not ever.

People of Mzansi, please i beg you...jst stop this whole Bafana reaching the last 16 thing. its impossible!!!!! in other words, its not practically possible!!! u know whats highly possible??? losing all our 3 group matches....that one is definately possible. the worse thing is that we are made to believe things that are not there. Going 2 brazil shows that we honour brazil, we think they are kings of soccer. its true brazil is a great team, but not the kings. Bafana bafana is worse than Orlando Pirates!!! Now imagine a national team worse than Pirates playing in the world cup!!!! its gona be a real Shame for Bafana supporters.

i knw the whole country want us to get to the last 16, but i want us to go a step furher, quarter-finals for me will do.
dronkie3/24/2010 12:55 PM
Hopefully we get to the last 16 at least
Syanda3/24/2010 12:52 PM

Reffer to @Craig 3/22/2010 4:26 PM. So what.. people must sit back and entertaint derogatory insults every single day from those opposed to football. Come on now you are over simplifying the issue.
AL 3/23/2010 4:29 PM
To all the blacks complaining about the white man AGAIN, GFY!!!! It`s pathetic that the certain few can bring down a whole race of people. You will probably see more whites than blacks at the WC games. You are the most racist peolpe on the planet and turn everything into an us vs them story. You idiots walk around with your eyes closed, take what you can and give nothing back. I wish `YOU` would pack up and leave ffs and let the rest of us grow the country to where it should be.
Veja3/23/2010 12:01 PM
Well done Bafana Bafana. Those who still doubt your progress am sure you will make them eat humble pie. A lot of international analyst rate your chances highly after having witnessed your Confed Cup performance and your current camp is adding much needed synergy and confidence in your play which is altogether very impressive. People judge you on past performance which you did prepare for them as well as you did for Confed and now the world cup. I bet Bafana are going to be the surprse of the tournament. Phambili Bafana phambili!!
phil3/22/2010 7:09 PM
BB are the lowest seeded team ever at a WC. We could not even qualify for the African Cup of Nations. Based on these facts, we do not have a chance in hell. It is worse than saying the Brazil will win the rugby World Cup. (Brazil is actually 28th in the world, believe it or not.) But to win, you need to score goals and miracles do happen. If we are keeping teams from scoring and continue to do so, we might just see a miracle happen. We need some "Madiba Magic".
@Craig3/22/2010 4:26 PM
Tell that to the white bloggers who call the team Banana Banana. Apartheid only ended on paper 15 years ago. If you visit this soccer forum often you will see that the whites jump at every opportunity to change a Bafana Bafana topic into one that is politics or complaining about SA.... their comments typically fall in the following categories 1) Bafana is rubbish because the ANC is rubbish 2)Bafana players are a bunch of idiots only suitable to work in a garden, mine or riding at the back of a bakkie 3)those who support Bafana Bafana are brainwashed low IQ baffons in the same way that majority of SA has been brainwashed by the ANC....etc... So if there are people who play race on these forums, its usually the narrow minded whites.
Craig3/22/2010 3:34 PM
I new somebody would pull the race card, apartheid ended 15 years ago, none of the players can claim pre-disadvantaged, the problem lies in the fact that they are useless and if they weren't the hosts they wouldn't even be there. As long as we have fans that still use apartheid as an excuse and believe we are doing well in Brazil are chances will never improve.
Zandile3/22/2010 2:38 PM
This was an excellent end to tour... now there next tour to Sao Paolo must produce even better. At least Bafana are trying!
Yes we can!!3/22/2010 12:02 PM
@ Edward, man i am with you. In case these leeches hve forgotten what brazil or who they are, they must just check on the amazing history of the soccer mad country. Let me state some facts, 1) they have played in all WC's finals and they are the only country to do so. 2) They have won the WC 5 times, they have featured in more finals than any country, their players collectively command a lion's share of all soccer players remunerations , about more than 50% of any person you meet in Brazil is a soccer player. That we have played their sides, albeit at second string level, and played more than 540 minutes without conceding a goal and we have about 8 of our own, that means a lot. And they have forgotten we are in this in the first place because of their stupid dads and moms who legalised apratheid and caused our country's isolation. They must see this and themselves as the cause of this problem, but as usual they will not own up. Is there any lousier and stupid fools in the world like some south african whites? all I know is that there is value in these camps cos it fosters unity, it cretaes an opportunity for the coach to see what his players can and cannot do, it fosters team building, it creates unity which couldn't be achieved through any other means if they were in SA, they learn new tricks. Japan and korea sent their youth teams to Brazil and football life has never been the same ever since. Go BAFANABAFANA, WE ARE BEHIND YOU ALL THE WAY AND WE LOVE YOU. And these loosers can all trek to another planet if they want, we will always love you.
noel3/22/2010 11:28 AM
My Dearest Edward, I give you 120% for being positive. With an attitude like that you will go places. Can BB win the World Cup? Like you said there are no reasons why they cannot. They have the same number of men on the field as all the other teams. Will they win the world cup? It is probably very unlikely. But like I said, "Dreaming is free and no-oner can take that away from you." I will watch every BB game and will be shouting my heart out. Go BB give it everything you have with an "EDWARD" attitude. Who knows? I love the game.
nicodemus3/22/2010 11:19 AM
@Edward -- Do you really think that Bafana are now going to suddenly jump from 86th on the soccer world rankings to WORLD CHAMPIONS based purely on a good record against under 19 & ordinary club sides??? You are obviously refusing to be practical & insist on being dreamy - eyed & again looking for something for nothing, just like our govt.
Craig3/22/2010 10:51 AM
You are sometimes beating clubs second teams and you think you're on track, what nonsense is this, you are the SA national team, if beating the second team of a football club 1-0 is a highlight, we can assume you already have written yourelves off at the world cup, you should be thrashing club teams, averaging 2.1 goals a game against club teams is an absolute disgrace.
Vusi3/22/2010 9:53 AM
@Edward, stop smoking your socks. There is no way that you can compare second stringer club sides to the highly talented international sides that bb will have to face in the world cup!Lastly most european soccer writers expect us to come stone last...read the daily tabloids...and come back to reality.
namo3/22/2010 7:07 AM
what a great perfomance,wish u luck
Edward3/22/2010 6:00 AM
Lehlohonoolo Clearly you know nothing about soccer. History shows us that most home teams reach the semi finals. You underestimate the ability of the coach and this squad of players Not so the experts Most European soccer writers predict Bafana will be in the last four. There is no reson why ZA can not win the WC
lehlohonolo3/21/2010 8:26 PM
Come on Faizal and Edward, you guys must be smoking something,really.6 wins against under 19's ,and reserve teams in brazil count for nothing.
Scaramouche3/21/2010 7:45 PM
Good to see them putting some hard work and having a focussed set-up. There should only be one thing in their minds-eye, without any distraction, and that is to gel into a strong unit. We might not have the same level of talent or experience that teams like England has, but with a strong team focus, fit athletes and massive support base nothing stops them from making all South Africans proud! Good luck Bafana!
faizal3/21/2010 7:29 PM
go on! go! go! well done bafana bafana. I am 100% behind you"ll, train hard and put your best effort come what may and we shall overcome and truimph and be victorious. all the best. Go Bafana Go.
Lucky3/21/2010 6:27 PM
Congrats to bafana & the coach on the job well done, i believe in carlos pereira's vision to bring local based players up to speed with international football. Come 11 june when all players (incl. overseas based) will be assembled i tell you we will win, theres no doubt.....
EDWARD3/21/2010 6:10 PM
In July when South Africa wins the world cup she will be the first country in the world to be no 1 in Rugby Cricket and Soccer. A fantastic achievement for such a small country,For any side to go across to Brazil and remain unbeaten over 6 matches is an enormous acheivement.Ignore the negative comments of Ponkie and Player. It does not take a rocket scientist to work out that they are white and jealous because soccer is not a their game in this country.Give praise where it is due
Ponkie3/21/2010 4:46 PM
That's right, start building the display cabinet for the SWC trophy, but don't quit your daytime jobs just yet, because the trophy cabinet will remain empty. Dreams are good friends... The only way Banana-Banana will get the SWC trophy is when they steal it.
Player3/21/2010 4:42 PM
and? You don't test your abilities against club sides.........
