Americans to 'invade' SWC

Cape Town - Americans appear set to be by far the most numerous group of foreign fans coming to South Africa for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, Parliament's sports and recreation portfolio committee heard on Tuesday.

This is according to the number of tickets sold up to the end of football governing body FIFA's third sales phase, which ended on January 22.

Briefing MPs, Local Organising Committee CFO Farouk Seedat said 107 576 tickets for the event had been sold to the general public in the United States.

The second-highest number of sales was in the United Kingdom (63 835) followed by Germany (29 733) and Australia (26 488).

By comparison, public ticket sales in South Africa's "top two" neighbouring countries, Mozambique and Botswana, were 1474 and 1257 respectively.

To date, a total of 2.1 million tickets had been sold for the event.

Seedat said 311 271 tickets were still available for sale to the general public.

In the current sales phase four -- which opened on February 9 and runs to April 7 -- a total of 194 349 ticket sales had been "confirmed" to date.

"The domestic demand has far outstripped the demand from overseas. A total of 164 193 of the 194 349 have been bought by South Africans," he said.

From April 15 -- the start of FIFA's sales phase five -- tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, with applications processed in the order in which they are received.

Match Event Services executive chairperson Jaime Byrom told MPs that many match tickets, originally allocated to commercial affiliates, hospitality and TV rights holders, licensees and others, would soon become available to the general public.

Ticket seekers who entered FIFA's random selection draw process, which takes place on April 15, therefore stood a chance to obtain tickets to matches where currently tickets might not be available.

This was the result of tickets being "redistributed" back from these organisations for sale to the general public.

"One day you can have a match that is not available for sale, and then all of a sudden certain matches become available for sale."

FIFA had not yet come to the end of this redistribution process, he said.

The so-called "random selection draw sales phase" closes on March 31.

reading all these negative comments makes me sad. south Africa is a democratic country, if you don't like it here - please leave, because we certainly don't need your type here! Other than the few minority of people on the globe that have issues coming to the World Cup, everyone else is excited about this World Cup. And as for the people that think they are south african's, stop dooming our world cup with your pessimissm and bull$h!t talk..

With the SWC in South Africa will be like South Africa riding on top of a "Sunami-wave" and after that come crushing down......and a revolution is born with al these new "Warlords" starting to shine theire armour..."What a nightmare dream I had".."Eish!!!!"
Rohan3/10/2010 8:43 AM
The negative comments constantly ejaculated by the pessimist whites here really gets up my chuff. You're wrong! I mean, I am white, but I am not blind to the fact that the SWC is going to be the most uplifting event ever to be staged in out country and I certainly am going to be enjoying it to no end. I really can't wait, and I do think that we have the most beautiful stadiums in world football. The foreigners are going to be bowled over...
@Sean3/10/2010 2:34 AM
Sean - Hear, hear. As an expat, who has come to this country out of choice, I can't tell you how much better it is living in South Africa than in cold, wet Britain full of gloomy people who never smile! The only problem here is the naysayers who can't find a good thing to say about this country - and even want the WC to fail - what a load of garbage they are. On the other hand there are also masses of great people here - so why don't these guys just leave! England awaits!

16YEARS INTO A DEMOCRACY AND STILL THERE IS THIS AWB COPYCATS WHO IS TRYING TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY AS THE LOWEST YOU CAN GET JUST SHUTUP MY FAMILY WERE ALL VICTIMS OF CRIME AND I MEAN VIOLENT CRIME BUT DO YOU SEE ME BAD MOUTHING THE COUNTRY NO I SUPPORT THE COUNTRY IF YOU DONT LIKE THE COUNTRY THEN GO TO HELL (GERMANY)
Sean3/9/2010 10:12 PM
What is wrong with you people!? Are your lives that meaningless that you have to slam everything! As an expat I well and truely realise the grass isn't always greener on the other side.. South Africa is a beautiful place with so much going for it. Yes it has a rampant crime problem, but instead of complaining about it realise what caused this problem to begin with!! All I ever hear from people who have been to South Africa is what a beautiful and friendly place it is, yet all I ever hear from your average middle class white South African is what a hole it is. Maybe it's time to swap places and see how fun life is in a city full of knife wielding thugs and constantly overcast weather! The people who should truely be complaining are the marginalised and impoverished, but they aren't because this World Cup means the world to them and finally gives them a chance to share in something POSITIVE if just for a day, a week or a month.
mattermatishin3/9/2010 9:05 PM
so there are about 260 000 say 300 000 tickets sold and each person apparently goes to about 4 games. so then there are about 75 000 people coming. where are the 450 000 they said were on the way? hey?
Welcome you funny people!3/9/2010 7:17 PM
I thought your nation was petrified about terrorism !!!! Come to this country and experience “proper” terrorism. Don’t we have murders every 25 min (or is it seconds by now) in SA??? What do you call that??? O sorry, the perfect rainbow nation..... Welcome and come and see (read) the real light...

We are all looking forward to grand 2010 soccer events, no matter how many Americans will actually be here.Humble pie is always good for the indigestion which we suffer from. Of course, whatever is wrong is the fault of the people of our country - never that of the goverment! (I wonder how they got elected - but then, dependant on our support sentiments, some are just bigger suckers for punishment). Let's stop[ the criticism but on the other hand be open for realism. Eventually the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
M3/9/2010 5:35 PM
It would be interesting to see if all these Americans actually pitch up. Personally, I doubt it. When we were there in 2007, we asked nearly every American we spoke to (and as you may have guessed there were many). Most were candid. They told us straight out that they would not becoming as they were rather waiting for the World Cup to be held in Brazil in 2014. Even then they told us that Brazil was far cheaper for them to get to and far more value for money. They also told us that they had no idea who Nelson Mandela was and was South Africa somewhere near India. But on a brighter note - only 124 days to the end of the SWC.
It makes you nasty3/9/2010 5:34 PM
Now that some good is reported around the SWC and that indeed people are coming, all of a sunday the pessimists are out beating their drums that its wrong. When it was reported foreigner weren't coming, they were also happy. Your backwardness knows no bounds, brain-less nin-com-poops. Be happy for your country, be happy people all over the world want to celebrate with you, dont sulk!!
NSE3/9/2010 5:05 PM
@Raj... WELL SAID.
Mike3/9/2010 4:59 PM
I think it's fair to aassume that each American will probably watch about 10 to 15 games during their stay here. So the 107576 tickets allegedly sold probably represents around 8000 - 10000 actual visitors. BIG DEAL..............
jennifer.jelsma3/9/2010 4:54 PM
I am disgusted at the pathetic whinging of fellow whites. If you really think it is so awful here, please leave, we will be much better off without you. SA has met every SWC target so far and the SWC will be such fun - why don't you just join in and enjoy it?
trooth?3/9/2010 4:42 PM
similar numbers to last month and books do not balance (2.1 mill 'sold' of which many are to be returned) . no wonder top hotel operator (radisson) in capetown waterfront edge has folded. publish the actual true sales numbers so business can plan properly. does fedhasa know what is happening - if so, speak.
edward3/9/2010 4:41 PM
The Americans must have an ulterior motive in coming to ZA. since no one in that country other than a few hispanics understands the game of soccer. It is far too complicated for Americans to understand and follow.Ban the lot
Hope3/9/2010 4:40 PM
Stop complaining and nagging, people! Welcome the foreigners with open arms! Be optimistic for a change and enjoy the games and the party! It's up to us South Africans, to make it work! Just a pitty, that many of us are so greedy.
njabz3/9/2010 4:39 PM
It must suck being a pale male judging from these comments. The fact that its not rugby or soccer coming here is killing all of you inside and you will do and say anything to detract from the fact that the biggest sporting event in the world is coming to SA whether you pale pigs like it or not. You whine about crime, the government, etc...that really will not change anything, the world will come to SA regardless of your feelings and this we will enjoy the biggest moment in the democracy of SA. Go back and eat biltong, have kids with your daughters or kill black people or whatever it is that you people do, we couldnt care less about you.
chuck3/9/2010 4:32 PM
Not everyone in the US supports the USA - Italians, Spanish, Brazilian, English etc,,,,,The interesting point is England. I think the biggest in stadium representation will be from England. Think of all the expats living in SA. I have heard that most of applied and got tickets. This is probably Englands best opportunity to win given the support that is going to be in the stadiums for them. My guess in the group stages that 75% of the in stadium support will be English.
Terence3/9/2010 4:28 PM
I hope the American consulate is being honest and pre warning them of the crime here in SA – I feel sorry for these poor SWC spectators they have yet to meet the barbaric savages from this continent. They can always just blame it on apartheid - then on the other hand it will be good for the rest of the world to see and experience first hand - maybe then they will stop sending aid to Africa
Alchemist3/9/2010 4:28 PM
Lets hope that this is ACTUALLY an undercover task force who will move north after USA knocked out of SWC and help overthrow that disgrace to Africa, Bob Mugabe so that Zim can also have FAIR democratic elections ! Bob beware !
Eugene3/9/2010 4:17 PM
add up these numbers and there are about 250 000 tickets sold to overseas based tourists. I am sure people coming would watch at least 2 games if not more so there wont be more than 120 000 odd tourists in total. We are going to host a brilliant event wiht no one coming to appreciate it. Still think FIFA make millions out of us and we only get nice stadiums out of the deal
Sean3/9/2010 4:10 PM
So many negative comments. Is this what South Africa has become!? So sad.
Shano3/9/2010 4:08 PM
we can thank Oprah for that.
GT3/9/2010 4:02 PM
Mpho - TICKET SALES DO NOT MATCH AIRLINE SALES. Do you think I am making this up? I have my tickets and love SWC, but we are getting halfbaked answers from halfbrained managers. How are all these people going to get here, by cuban refugee boat? Apply your brain to my post and give me an answer lightbulb
Brandyball3/9/2010 3:56 PM
Americans ? Travelling to some godforsaken continent to watch some dumb game they never invented ? Who are we to believe here ?
Natasha3/9/2010 3:53 PM
Im really happy the Americans are coming to experience our beautiful country. They are the biggest culprits in believing we live in a country where lions, tigers, elephants, etc. roam the streets and everyone wears traditional outfits, etc.. Is there anyway we ban the Australians? they just gonna come and be so negative, obviously being influenced by the "South African Australians" living down under now
Burtfred3/9/2010 3:36 PM
@T with an O Hey dude, you sound like a really well-ballanced bloke - a race chip on each shoulder.
Paul3/9/2010 3:34 PM
Guyz... SA is running neck-to-neck with USA on violent crimes! Hence, no surprise for the US fans as we are brothers & sisters in "crime"! You r all very much welcomed to our beloved country.
Juan3/9/2010 3:32 PM
YES!! and the USA press isn't censored by the sa government, so they'll actually WILL publish reports on rape and murder and assault and robbery of foreign tourists in SA!! YES YES YES!
@ T with an O3/9/2010 3:31 PM
The term is 'dog in the manger'. You seem so filled with hate that you argue one way and another like a flip-flop. If these are expats, then they are showing real interest in the country and the SWC. And bringing money with them. And taking back new goodwill from the experience. Hmmm?
Mpho R3/9/2010 3:30 PM
@GT, your comment is dumb, foreigners would need to prove that they have SWC tickets to get visas and not the other way around. You just sound like you are trying to start another naysayers' thread, you will eat more humble pies.
Raj3/9/2010 3:25 PM
The fickle public rise again...the problem with SA is not the gov. but the people and their stinking negative attitudes....the SWC will be a success if we choose it to be...so stop cowaring behind your own fear and get soem balls....you're AFRICAN.
SIPHO MALEMA3/9/2010 3:24 PM
There's only one bunch who are worse at math and that is the SA guvvamunt! To He** with the SWC, FIFA and everything else involved with it.
Steve3/9/2010 3:21 PM
Who is buls@@@ing who? Americans don't even like this crap game
@ rbgguy3/9/2010 3:15 PM
It is not teh number of foreigners coming to the world cup that is in question. It's the number that will leave alive.
just askin3/9/2010 3:13 PM
has anyone told them that they need two pages open in their passport or the gestapo at the airport will send them home? hopefully with a zimigrant to carry their bags.
Attie3/9/2010 3:09 PM
applied for 28 tickets, got them all! give it another 2 months gonna be worth gold
Anti-War3/9/2010 3:08 PM
That is why we will have massive security concerns. Just imagine Israel, Iraq and Afghanistan also qualified together with the USA and UK. What a security nightmare it would be and a WC that should be played in each individual country rather. I have tickets for 5 games at a stadium. One is a USA game. Im not going to that game because I dont want to risk my own security in my own country because of another country's wars all over the globe.
hank3/9/2010 3:03 PM
FIFA must be the biggest liers I have ever come across, what games are available in Cape Town, i'll tell you - NONE, ZERO, NADA
GT3/9/2010 2:51 PM
The sale of tickets is not matching with the sale of airline tickets. Does SWC Committee have anything to say on this? There was no need for someone to prove they were actually coming to SA before buying a ticket. I fear people have bought tickets, then seen the cost of the actual travel and just decided to walk away from coming.
Ryan3/9/2010 2:47 PM
Makes sense, Americans don't even know what continent SA is on let alone the crime statistics.....
Will3/9/2010 2:38 PM
Ah well then we are sorted...American probably do not know much about SA, and it will be quite easy to surprise them, while also if/when our unpleasant side surfaces, they will probably think it will be some "African" experience to tell the folks at home
rbgguy3/9/2010 2:36 PM
No foreigners coming to the world cup hey? Eat some more humble pie, naysayers.
Gibbaan3/9/2010 2:33 PM
I really hope they a spectacular opening ceremony and not just a few 'impis' running around in leopard skins.
