Durban - Schoolchildren will ditch their uniforms for football jerseys, while dancers will take to the streets on Tuesday as South Africa celebrates the 100-day countdown to the World Cup.

Top FIFA officials, including the world football body president Sepp Blatter and secretary general Jerome Valcke, will mark the occasion in Durban with a press conference aimed at dispelling doubts about South Africa's readiness for the June 11 to July 11 tournament.

They'll be winding up a tour of the 10 stadiums that will host the matches, aiming to reassure naysayers that despite some work being done on the pitches and the surrounding grounds, all the venues are on track for the kick-off.

South Africa has poured R33 billion into preparations for the tournament.

The heavy construction is already finished at all the stadiums. Soccer City, the 95 000-seat venue for the opening and final matches should be handed over within a month.

Major upgrades to airports in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Bloemfontein are complete, while Durban's new airport is set to open on May 1.

Valcke said on Monday that on a scale from one to 10, South Africa's readiness was at an eight.

"We will be at 10 on June 11," he told journalists. "In terms of readiness, South Africa is ready to host the World Cup in 2010."

Ordinary South Africans are being urged to get into the spirit by wearing the green and yellow jersey of the Bafana Bafana national side, blowing the vuvuzela trumpets that are ubiquitous at local matches and waving the national flag, said Danny Jordaan, head of the local organising committee.

He said South Africans were also being urged to learn their national anthem, which includes verses in five of the country's 11 official languages, and to buy tickets for the matches.

"We see a tremendous response," Jordaan said last week.

FIFA says that 2.2 of the 2.9 million tickets have already been sold, even though fewer foreign fans are expected to attend.

South Africa is banking on 450 000 foreign visitors, though the actual number could be lower, with many fans overseas still recovering from the shock of the global recession.

The 100-day mark will give South Africa a chance to try to overcome lingering concerns about the games, especially security in a nation with one of the highest crime rates in the world, averaging 50 murders each day.

South Africa has spent more than 2.4 billion rand on security, recruiting 41,000 additional police and buying hi-tech equipment for the competition.

Overall, South Africans are increasingly optimistic about the World Cup. A survey out on Monday found that 85% believe the nation will ready for the games.

The public was less rosy about the chances about the hot-and-cold fortunes of Bafana Bafana - only 55 percent said they thought the team was ready to compete.

If SWC starts 11 Jun 2010 and that is day 0, then including today there is 101 days left. If we exclude today, then 10 Jun would be day 0. Please explain to me how today is 100 days?

Here comes "Foxymania" - be aware!

I see Foxy you are a very bitter person. I bet you had a childhood dream of becoming a good soccer player one day unfortunately talent stood in your way. Having said that I think we should all rally behind the boys and give them our full support. This an opportunity to once and for all show the world that SA is not such a bad country ofter all. Remember that most people do not much about good things that are happening in this country (thanks to mordern jounarlism) and hence a good show by us would at the least encourage visitors to come again (tourism boosted) and maybe investment here and there. Call me a dreamer but I have confidence in my country and all the peolple in it regardless of colour (and of course including you Foxy)

100 days it seems like only yesterday that it was announced that we won the draw its amazing how much this country can do when we pull together and work as one nation, im proud of this country and proud to be part of this amazing event. That said i think its still taking awhile for it to hit us that this is actaully happening. I honestly think that our boys are going to do us proud and im behind them 100% even thou a place in the finals seems like a far fetched day dream but theres a chance and how ever small the chance theres still a chance South Africa in the 1999 world cup weren't expected to win it but they had something to prove and our team has something to prove so do us proud boys. to finish things off Foxy the country needs this more than you think it would give this country a chance to improve the schooling, improve the way of life for people and just boost the moral of everyone. Remember everyone has a to make there own chooses that goes for the matrics aswell they can dance in the streets or they can study its up to them just because the soccer world cup is here doesnt mean they will fail if the study they will pass and i bet you now that the ones that do pass are the ones that studied

Foxy and Immy, I wonder which country you are from if you do not support events hosted by your country it shows lack of the spirit of brotherhood in you. The budget speech has taken care of Educational needs. We should be pround and happy for our nation. Maybe you are Australlian or you reside there not in this country. Please people grow up.
Thembani3/2/2010 9:20 AM
Foxy, Its nice to see that there are patriotic South Afrcan who are determined to see our grade 12 excel in their exams and help South Africa to be developmental state that we envision. However, foxy, Education receive too much money than all the priorities of government, to we are all serious about government. Lastly, today we celebrate our milestone in preparation for 2010 SWC. As you are a patriotic citizen, join us and celebrate our achievements and many more to come. Its your country, help it.
van3/2/2010 9:11 AM
even if we spent all the country's money on education it won't solve our problems. don't forget the positive benefits of sport. after school the kids still need something to do. we have the world cup. let's make the best of it.
Mfanomncane3/2/2010 8:50 AM
@Foxy-Oh really now? Did you say the same thing when we hosted rugby and the cricket world cups? You might as well tell all SAfricans to stop attending any Currie Cup,PSL,domestic cricket games and pour our money to education. Do you ever have fun? Maybe you're one of those who was beullied so often at school you haven't gotten over it despite counselling?
Koekemoer3/2/2010 8:47 AM
@foxy, jealousy makes you nasty.
Immy3/2/2010 8:47 AM
Well said Foxy.I agree with you 100%
KOKI3/2/2010 8:42 AM
sad to see how some people cannot embrace this ocne in a lifetime opprtunity that is going to put our beloved country's name even higher on the world map and possibly make other world leaders recognise and realise the potential that our country's children posses. sure the hype is big and education is a little bit neglected but is it really that much of an issue???parents should be able to control their children and this is something that is going to be remebered for a eternity to come and THOSE children are probably going to benefit from it even in the very long run........
Phelan3/2/2010 8:41 AM
@Foxy, You doomsday prophets will never lighten up will you? It must really suck to be so negative.
fk3/2/2010 8:39 AM
Foxy you sound like someone bitter ,is it because soccer in South Africa is mostly loved by Blacks?i wonder if it was Rugby or Cricket as White Sports you were going to feel the same.Did you listen to the Budget Speech FYI a lot of money is going to Education. If you do not want to enjoy soccer why do not just shut up and let us enjoy it.
magnifique'3/2/2010 8:32 AM
Truly magnifique' is how one describes the stadiums!!! South Africans must really be proud and get rid of those long faces, this is a time we should be happy. I am so proud to be South African. Stadiums are a piece of art and alegacy we can all be proud of for years from now, where are we building the next olympic stadium by the way?? That should be our next goal.
gee3/2/2010 8:23 AM
I hope it will be ALL school children that get football jerseys and that they to share in this celebration !!!
Foxy3/2/2010 8:08 AM
this year more matrics will fail, because they will be dancing in soccer outfits instead of going to school .. Rather ensure that the children go to school, see to it that they get proper and safe transport to school, good teachers, books etc. than making such a fuss of the soccer. They should have invested the money in the EDUCATION system instead.
