About the Stadium
Ellis Park Stadium was built in 1924 as a rugby stadium. It became the venue we know today after being demolished and rebuilt in 1982.
It is the home of the Golden Lions (formerly Transvaal), the Lions Super 14 franchise and Orlando Pirates Football Club. It has hosted top soccer teams such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Argentina.
Perhaps the most famous moment in the history of the stadium was when the Springboks beat the All Blacks to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup in-front of a capacity crowd, and former president Nelson Mandela in a replica Bok jersey.
