Johannesburg - ANC president Jacob Zuma discussed party unity and the 2010 World Cup at the national executive committee (NEC) meeting, party deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe said on Friday.

"He raised the importance of the country's celebration of the 2010 World Cup in a manner that will cement the unity of the nation," Motlanthe told reporters outside the ANC NEC meeting in Johannesburg.

"He did wish (Bafana Bafana) to score more goals."

He added that party unity was a "standing issue" at all NEC meetings.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said that by 15:00 Zuma had concluded speaking and the meeting would be opened to discussion amongst members.

"Comrades have raised a number of issues and comrades will raise a number of issues... for a united NEC meeting," Mthembu said.

He said the NEC may discuss the results of ANC Youth League president Julius Malema's disciplinary hearing. Malema was on Tuesday found guilty of undermining Zuma and punished with a R10 000 fine, 20 days at the ANC's political school and anger management classes.

"It is not on the agenda but it is likely (to be discussed)," Mthembu said.

He said the NEC would not pre-empt a report that might be compiled by the disciplinary committee. However, whether or not there was a report, the issue would ultimately be discussed.

ANCYL secretary general Vuyiswa Tulelo said on Thursday her organisation did not believe the hearing followed "procedure" and would be taking it up with ANC leaders. Tulelo was present at Friday's NEC meeting.

The quarterly meeting in Johannesburg started on Friday and was expected to end on Sunday.
