Johannesburg - Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was not in the Johannesburg car accident which killed her and former president Nelson Mandela's great granddaughter early on Friday morning, police said.
Gauteng spokesperson Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said that an earlier police report that she was in the vehicle which rolled on the M1 near the Selby offramp was incorrect.
The accident occurred at 00:35 when they were on their way home from the World Cup kickoff concert at Orlando stadium in Soweto.
Their driver was arrested for alleged culpable homicide and drunken driving.
Associated Press news agency reported earlier that Madikizela-Mandela was treated briefly at the Morningside Medi-Clinic. A spokesperson for the clinic was not immediately available to comment on this.
Apple of her eye
Jan-Jan Joubert reports that sources close to the family have confirmed Madikizela-Mandela was not in the car at the time of the crash.
She had accompanied her great-grandchild Zenani Mandela to the concert, after which they had returned home.
The deceased then headed out with at least two other people, assumed to be friends. They were involved in the accident, which did not involve any other vehicles.
Madikizela-Mandela is said to be distraught, as the deceased was the apple of her eye.
Although it was earlier confirmed the former president would attend the World Cup soccer match between South Africa and Mexico, chances for that happening are now deemed remote.
