Johannesburg - The N1 highway en route to Sandton in Johannesburg was gridlocked on Friday afternoon as soccer supporters headed to fan parks in Sandton and Montecasino.

Drivers and passengers seemed undaunted by the traffic jam, blowing vuvuzelas out of their car windows, all wearing yellow Bafana Bafana jerseys.

The highway near the William Nichol off-ramp was most affected just after 13:00.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the roads to Soccer City are also gridlocked, as many fans try to get there in time for the opening ceremony at 14:00.
