Johannesburg - A Spanish man, allegedly part of an international syndicate, appeared in a special World Cup Court in Port Elizabeth on Monday for a string of thefts, Eastern Cape police said.

The case against Carlos Marcial Rojas Richmucha was postponed to August 8. He and co-accused Carmela Isabella Jaime, 49, were linked to six thefts in Port Elizabeth and one in Sandton, Johannesburg, spokesperson Sibongile Soci said.

The pair, who lived in Peru, were arrested on different days and appeared in court separately.

"They were part of a syndicate of six that arrived in the country on June 16. They have allegedly been targeting tourists in hotels, shopping centres, restaurants, and at ATM machines."

The identities of the four others were known and police said they would be arrested soon.
