Security sets new standards

Johannesburg - Police commissioner General Bheki Cele on Sunday praised the security services for ensuring the safety of people visiting the country for the Soccer World Cup, saying they had created new standards for themselves.

"If it was not for the South African security services, we would not have gone this far," Cele told the police, SA National Defence Force and Johannesburg metro police at Nasrec.

"... The bad thing that you have done is that you have created a standard that you need to maintain," he said.

He had been in contact with Brazilian officials, who had asked the South African Police Service to help secure the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

"That's the mark and impact you have made. The world believes in you," he said.

"Make sure that when the visitors are gone, South Africans are safe. You need to maintain the squeeze on criminals' space and finish their oxygen."
