Johannesburg - Strangers, black and white, reached out and held hands as they entered the Elkah fan park in Soweto ahead of the long-awaited soccer World Cup opening game on Friday.
"It's for the love of the game," said Soweto youth Jabulani Makhoba, as excited fans entered the stadium blasting their vuvuzelas.
"We may have race issues in this country but today we are forgetting everything for the love our country," said Makhoba.
Groups of people kicked a soccer ball around while entertainers performed for the growing crowd.
Motorists on the road leading to the stadium motorists smiled as they waited for traffic to snake through.
A group of Mexicans in one car waved a Mexican flag at South Africans in the queue.
There were no signs of violence, but police were on hand watching.
An announcement over loudspeakers said a car outside the stadium was on fire but it was not yet clear what started the fire.
