Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal government on Thursday announced that it has spent about R80m on public viewing areas for the World Cup.

"In order to ensure that our people, even those who live outside the host city, are able to bask in the magic of the World Cup, our government has spent R80m on a public viewing areas programme," said KwaZulu-Natal acting MEC for economic development and tourism Ina Cronje.

KwaZulu-Natal would have 10 public viewing areas in nine municipalities, she said.

Cronje said the provincial government wanted to ensure that all rules and regulations were followed in the public viewing areas.

It had trained 940 safety volunteers and 6 600 local artists were scheduled to perform.

Opportunity to perform

"The artists will be given an opportunity to perform and will be paid by the department of arts and culture."

"They will consist of 160 established artists, 80 comedians and 160 poets, plus 80 community radio DJs and 320 visual artists will perform."

She said about 120 small businesses would trade at the venues.

Cronje said the public viewing areas were in keeping with FIFA regulations and were entrance free, but that there would be a strong police presence and traffic control.

They were also not as restrictive as the FIFA fan parks when it came to goods sold. Durban has a fan park on the beachfront, in the golden mile.
