Johannesburg - The 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee on Wednesday decided that the SA Police Force would take over security tasks at four stadiums during the sporting spectacle.

The decision was taken during a midday meeting between police and the committee, police spokesperson Sally De Beer said.

On Monday, striking security officials walked off the Green Point stadium ahead of a World Cup match between Italy and Paraguay over a wage dispute with their employer.

More than a thousand police trainees were deployed to take over security tasks.

On Wednesday, De Beer said police would now take over security at Soccer City, Ellis Park, Green Point and Moses Mabhida stadiums.

OC chief executive Danny Jordaan thanked the police for their commitment.

"The 2010 FIFA World Cup must remain a special celebration of Africa's first FIFA World Cup. We will ensure that the event environment is one that contributes to this celebration," Jordaan said.

Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele said: "Our priority is the safety of the tournament and the country as a whole. We will perform our responsibilities with diligence".
