Johannesburg - A man who ran onto the pitch during the Germany-Spain match in Durban was given the option of a R3 000 fine or three months in jail by a World Cup Court on Thursday, police said.

The 23-year-old Italian appeared in the Durban World Cup Court charged with pitch invasion - not trespassing as he had a ticket, said Colonel Tummi Shai.

On Wednesday night he entered Moses Mabhida Stadium in a wheelchair.

"He suddenly sprang up and ran onto the field," Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa told a press briefing in Pretoria earlier on Thursday.

He was supposed to have left the country on Thursday.

"Now he may be here a year or more. It was a very strange thing, but we are very satisfied with our security," Mthethwa said.
