Mexico City - A top Mexican tourism official has been fired after getting into a screaming match with relatives of Mexican soccer players at a World Cup match on Sunday.

Miguel Gomez Mont has apologised for his behaviour at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. He was the head of Mexico's tourism promotion agency, Fonatur.

Mexican television footage showed Gomez Mont in the middle of the row following Mexico's elimination from the World Cup on Sunday. Other spectators can be heard jeering at him.

Gomez Mont said on Wednesday that the fight started when he saw his wife had been knocked to the ground and he went to help her. He did not offer further details, saying only that he regretted his "inappropriate attitude".

Gomez Mont is the brother of interior minister, Fernando Gomez Mont.
