Maximum punishment for KZN cop

Durban – Maximum punishment must be imposed on a police officer caught drunk and in possession of drugs and R10 000 cash near the FIFA fan park, in Durban, the Democratic Alliance said on Friday.

"The DA welcomes the arrest of the offending officer and calls for the maximum punitive measure to be imposed," said DA caucus leader in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature John Steenhuisen

"While the majority of police officers are committed to ensuring a crime-free World Cup experience, there will always be some that don't play by the rules," he said.

The Warrant Officer was arrested on Thursday when heroin, cocaine, five cell phones and R10 000 cash were found in his car when it was searched at a roadblock in South Beach. The off-duty officer was drunk at the time.

"The reality is that the reckless actions of one person have the ability to tarnish the reputation of the entire police force in our province," said Steenhuisen.
