Durban – The man who ran onto the Moses Mabhida Stadium pitch during the World Cup semi-final between Germany and Spain in Durban was an Italian citizen who arrived at the stadium in a wheelchair, Police Minister Nathi Mthetwa said on Thursday.
"He suddenly sprang up and ran onto the field," Mthetwa said at a press conference in Pretoria.
"As we speak he is appearing in a World Cup court."
Mthetwa said the man's appearance in court had raised concerns, as he was supposed to have left the country on Thursday.
"Now he may be here a year or more. It was a very strange thing, but we are very satisfied with our security," he said.
