Germans look to the Dutch

Johannesburg – Netherlands will be the team to back in the soccer World Cup final after Germany lost its semi-final match 1-0 to Spain on Wednesday.

Thousands of supporters had gathered at the German School in Milpark, Johannesburg and, although some said their country played well, Spain was the better team.

"They did well, but played a little too defensively. I am all with Holland now," said Robert Weedman.

"Although I am a little heartbroken I know I can rely on the Netherlands team to do me proud."

As the final whistle blew, a group of Spanish supporters who had almost been lost in a sea of black, red and yellow, stood up on their tables and began waving their national flag.

Suported Bafana

"I can't believe it. I really thought it was going to be a Germany-Dutch final," one supporter said.

Michelle Smith, a South African living in Germany, said she had “supported Bafana Bafana 100%”.

"But they are gone and it's over for them. Therefore I began supporting Germany... Now I don't know who to support."

People filed out of the school hall, where they had been watching the game, and headed for the comfort of German food and beer.

"If all else fails, you can always rely on a German beer to sort you out," said one fan.

Bad news for car guard

In Port Elizabeth, Germany's loss was bad news for a local car guard.

"The people are cross now, they won't pay me. If Germany had won I'd have got 10 times the amount," a disappointed John Williams said outside the city's German club.

According to the club's assistant manager Peter Allan, about 700 people had packed the venue to watch the game.

"The result is good for business on Saturday. The Germans will now come to Port Elizabeth, but it's bad for German pride," he said, referring to the match for third place between Germany and Uruguay.

One long-faced German supporter, Mervyn van Eyssen commented: "All of a sudden, Spain played properly."
