Johannesburg - The German soccer fan who allegedly assaulted a cabin crew member when his plane did not make it to the World Cup semi-final appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Friday, the National Prosecuting Authority said.
"His case was postponed for tomorrow (Saturday)," spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said.
The postponement would allow Jorg Mardos' lawyers to consult with witnesses and the state. Mardos allegedly assaulted a cabin crew member and insulted others on landing in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday night.
He had been on a Durban-bound SA Airways flight which was forced to turn back due to congestion at King Shaka International Airport on Wednesday. As a result he missed the World Cup semi-final match between Germany and Spain.
Mardos, who apparently had a number of tickets for people waiting for him at Moses Mabhida stadium, allegedly started hurling insults at and assaulted one of the cabin crew. He was arrested on landing in Port Elizabeth and later granted bail.
Mhaga said Mardos could face other charges, including contravening the Civil Aviation Act, assault and crimen injuria "as it was alleged that he used the 'k-word' with one of the cabin crew members".
