Durban – The Moses Mabhida Stadium has not been renamed Durban Stadium by FIFA, the City of Durban said on Friday.
"There is absolutely no truth in the rumour that the name of our stadium has been changed by FIFA," said city manager Mike Sutcliffe.
He said it was agreed four years ago that all FIFA communications would refer to host city stadiums by their geographical locations.
This was done to help people around the world buying World Cup tickets to easily identify in which city the games were being played, he said.
"On the FIFA website the stadium in Durban is referred to as Durban Stadium, however when you click through for more information it's identified as the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban."
The stadium is named after ANC stalwart Moses Mabhida.
