FIFA guns for ticket website

Cape Town – A US-based website has come under fire from FIFA after launching a ticket transfer portal for World Cup fans who want to buy and resell their tickets.

A spokesperson for the website, socoza.com, who said they had already received two warning letters from the world football body, has dismissed the allegations.

"We are not breaking any rules," South African-based legal adviser Joel Shoot told News24 explaining that the website did not actually sell any tickets but provided a platform for fans to communicate with each other and exchange tickets. This, he said, excluded them from FIFA regulations.

"It is unfortunate that FIFA takes a dogmatic attitude in regard to working with others. Third parties could help fill the seats", Shoot said.

FIFA has in the past days raised concern about the number of empty seats at World Cup stadiums, even at matches where tickets are sold out.

Shoot said however that FIFA was largely responsible for the empty seats.

"They have created a problem with rules that are unworkable in everyday practice," he said.

One of FIFA's rule regarding ticket sales is that transfers have to get written consent from FIFA and the source of the tickets should be authorised by FIFA.

Shoot said transfers were helpful to fans whose teams did worse or better than expected in the tournament, mentioning the English and US fans as an example after the two teams produced unexpected results in group C.

England, considered the better of the two, came second while the Americans surprised all coming out tops, meaning that people who bought their tickets thinking England would win ended up at the wrong match.

"They were all sitting there with tickets for the wrong game," said Shoot adding that this was because of FIFA's "short-sightedness".

Selective enforcement

He said demand for exchanges on those games and from German fans who have become interested in the tournament following their team's 4-1 victory over England had been high.

"FIFA is not losing out, they have already sold the tickets, it is SA that is losing revenue with foreign fans unable to come here," he said.

He also accused FIFA of selective enforcement as there were ticket brokers who, unlike socoza.com, were actually selling tickets.

American companies Razorgator and eBay-owned StubHub, who can get up to 15% of the amount received for a ticket sold on their websites, are two of them.

"I'd like to see FIFA take on eBay. They would not take FiFA’s demands seriously, because ticket brokering is a well established and respectable enterprise, FIFA is demonising the industry, and they are being disingenuous" said Shoot.

Registration on socoza.com is free, but a $13 (about R100) fee is payable to read email from other users.

"We are hosting a multi billion rand event and we have to deal with this system," Shoot said.

FIFA was not immediately available for comment.

The body earlier advised fans to go to any First National Bank, Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets, FIFA ticketing centres or call 083 123 2010, to buy or resell their tickets.

Auntie fifi has an idea their. A rebel organisation that puts the fans and football first would have my vote. - use tv technology, including citing players who dive, a 6 month ban will stop that practice in its tracks. - ban vuvzelas during play. - A simple effective ticketing process.

I must say FIFA have bungled a number of things, the ticketing, empty seats, the ball (or at least not involving players more), the poor officiation, thier estimates of visitors & consequent financial return etc, etc. Its honestly quite amazing that the world puts up with this autocracy.

One thing that you all have to remember is that Fifa run the World Cup and that South Africa bid to host it. Fifa will make all the money from ticket sales etc. The host country will make money from the fans that come and stay here. All along the South African public was informed that they should not expect to make loads of money out of this SWC, but some still hoped and now the tears are falling all because no one listens or chooses not to understand. Fifa is a business not a charitable organisation and as a business it is their right to make money. Fifa are not holding a gun to your head to spend your money, it is your choice alone.

Firstly, @Chris - fifa makes the most money, by far! We as South Africans are footing the bills - and will do so for a long time to come. Secondly, where else have you seen the entire justice system of a COUNTRY protecting the bottom line of a commercial enterprize? Please read Andrew Jennings' :FOUL!" - very, very insightfull.

@ Fan: I don't wear T-shirts, but I'll definitely buy this one - AND wear it!

Get rid of FIFA. Period. The soccer fraternity should start a new soccer organisation to arrange World Cups. What does FIFA really do besides F**KALL ? The power is in the hands of all the soccer organisations around the world.................I cannot see how they cannot see through the charade. But, no ja well fine.....all we can do is bitch.....now one has the balls to do something about it.

yet again fifo act like a polce state and go against people that are doing what they are incapable of doing with all their resources. Fifa cannot take on competition without having to have the law of our country changed for their benefit. They should never be allowed to host another world cup!DISGUSTING!

It seems to me that the fifamafia is more interested in making rules and money than promoting and looking after the game of soccer. Should sep blatter not rather be explaining to us (via the media) why his referees are of such mediocre quality, than partying with the hob nobs (hence not being available for comment all the time) and making absurd rules as he goes along, and throwing everything under the blanket of security

And what is the fee to exchange your ticket at FNB?
Chris6/28/2010 9:57 PM
Howcome FIFA is never available for comment. Probably to busy counting their money. It irritates the crap out of me how the rich and famous FIFA won't allow the small guy to make a buck or two. I suppose that's how you become rich and famous in the first place. I would love to know who makes the most money out of this tournament, South Africa or FIFA?
THE PUNISHER6/28/2010 9:31 PM
F*** FIFA, THEY CAN'T EVEN SECURE AN HONEST REF FOR THE GAMES, NOW THEY WANT TO COME UP WITH THIS SHEET? I'M A GERMANY FAN, BUT THE 2ND ENGLAND GOAL WAS A GOAL. ONCE AGAIN, F*** FIFA
