Johannesburg – The safety of a Nigerian soccer player is receiving more scrutiny following death threats made against him, the police said on Monday.

Additional personnel would not be assigned to the security of Sani Kaita, but he would be closely watched by the assigned team security liaison officer (TSLO), Brigadier Sally de Beer said in a statement.

"The TSLO with the Nigerian team has been requested to pay close attention to Mr Kaita and to ensure that the stringent security measures already in place are sustained," said De Beer.

She described all 32 TSLOs as "experienced and highly trained".

The death threats against Kaita come after he received a red card in Thursday's match against Greece for kicking a Greek player in a dispute over a throw-in.

Nigeria lost the match 2-1.
