Durban – The national transport department was on Friday looking at taking "appropriate action" against private aircraft that refused to re-position at King Shaka International Airport in Durban creating chaos.
“We have been provided with the private aircraft details such as registration numbers… We are looking at taking appropriate action against the private aircraft,” said Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele’s spokesperson Logan Maistry.
On Wednesday there was chaos at King Shaka International Airport when aircraft could not land, resulting in some soccer fans missing the Soccer World Cup semi final between Germany and Spain at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The Airports Company SA (Acsa) said private aircraft would be towed out of the way if pilots refused to move them at OR Tambo International Airport during the final World Cup game on Sunday.
"We are going to be more forceful on Sunday. If aircraft refuse to move we will tow them away," said Acsa operations manager Bongani Maseko on Thursday.
He said that on Wednesday the pilots of private aircraft, many carrying VIPs, had refused to adhere to the set procedure of dropping off their passengers at King Shaka International Airport before moving to the old Durban International Airport to park.
On Friday Acsa said it was considering all measures it could take against private aircraft which refused to follow procedure.
“We are reviewing the process, all options are being considered. A decision has not been taken yet,” said Acsa spokesperson Colin Naidoo.
Comair Limited and Kulula.com on Thursday demanded an independent investigation into the chaos at the airport.
