Pietermaritzburg – The DA intends asking the KwaZulu-Natal government whether it used public money to purchase World Cup tickets.
“The DA wants to establish from Finance MEC Ina Cronje exactly how many provincial government departments purchased tickets, how many were purchased and how they were distributed,” DA KwaZulu-Natal legislature leader John Steenhuisen said in a statement on Monday.
The Democratic Alliance also wanted to find out from Co-operative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube whether any local, metropolitan or district councils purchased tickets with ratepayer’s money.
Steenhuisen said the move followed revelations that premier Zweli Mkhize's office bought tickets for members of parliament in the province.
“This purchase of tickets for members is in clear contravention of a directive from national treasury, which classified expenditure of public money on World Cup tickets as irregular.
“There is no reason why tickets bought with public money should be provided to (members of the provincials legislature), who are amongst the top five percent of earners in the province.”
The DA also intended asking the Standing Committee on Public Accounts to investigate.
Mkhize's spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the KwaZulu-Natal government bought tickets as part of its "marketing campaign".
"The provincial cabinet took a decision to purchase tickets for members of parliament with an aim to ensure that they are an integral part of our marketing campaigns.
“Everything was done within the stipulated conditions regarding World Cup activities,” he said in a statement.
