Johannesburg - Elation reverberated from the rafters to the benches of the Soccer City stadium on Friday as Bafana Bafana scored the inaugural goal of the World Cup - the first on African soil.
"I'm ecstatic. It was a clean goal. This is the beginning of great things," said Caroline Bauthier.
Fans still stuck in long queues to buy food screamed as they watched the goal in the first few minutes of the second half.
One man moved to a corner, laid down his blanket and knelt down in grateful prayer.
Inside the stadium, the sound of the vuvuzelas blaring was deafening as fans screeched their delight.
Meanwhile, Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar has urged motorists to avoid the roads around the stadium as the match was close to completion and fans would soon make their way out of the stadium.
Nasrec Road and Rand Show Road will be closed to traffic as they will be used to get busses out of the stadium, he said.
