Convicted man back in court

Johannesburg – A 21-year-old man jailed for 12 years after breaking into the guest house of a FIFA World Cup visitor, appeared in the Potchefstroom Regional Court on an unrelated case on Thursday.

Martin Palmer and a 17-year-old youth appeared for housebreaking, theft and possession of stolen property relating to a house burglary in the Bult area of Potchefstroom, said police spokesperson Captain Adele Myburgh.

He was arrested on June 26 after a Spanish visitor's room was ransacked and property was stolen from a guest house.

The tourist's clothes were found next to a nearby railway line by police who also spotted Palmer walking with the minor, down Albert Luthuli street carrying equipment and clothing. They stopped them for questioning.

Both were arrested on suspicion of being in possession of stolen property and the police took a flat screen TV, shoes, a computer hard drive and coat hangers in for safekeeping.

Stolen items

They found that the items had been stolen from the house in Bult.

They also linked Palmer to the theft from the Spanish visitor, for which he was sentenced to 12 years on Tuesday.

On Thursday, the pair appeared for the housebreaking and theft at Bult and for being in possession of stolen property.

Their case was postponed to August 13.

The 17-year-old was remanded in custody in a juvenile place of safety.
