Cape Town - Imbongis and opera singers are among more than a thousand "highly talented" Cape Town artists selected to perform at the city's official World Cup events, the city said on Monday.

They would appear alongside established professional artists, it said in a statement.

Over the past six weeks, over 3 000 artists had participated in auditions at six venues across the city.

Each of the 166 acts selected would perform at least once either at the Fifa Fan Fest on the Grand Parade, the Fan Walk between Cape Town station and the Cape Town Stadium, or at one of the four public viewing areas.

Acts chosen included imbongis, jugglers, magicians, comedians, poets, rappers, bands, opera singers, drummers and dancers.

The final programme would be announced closer to the tournament.
