Cape Town – When it comes to World Cup fever, Cape Town is lagging way behind the rest of the country a week before kick-off, government spokesperson Themba Maseko said on Thursday.

"As far is the Western Cape is concerned my call would be for Capetonians to begin to show their excitement about the World Cup," Maseko told a post-Cabinet briefing.

"I've been driving around Cape Town in the last few days and I have seen very few flags flying from cars...I have seen very few citizens of the city of Cape Town wearing the Bafana shirt.

"So the call is for Capetonians to realise that the SWC is just around the corner. Other than seeing the stadiums we would like to see ordinary Capetonians wearing Bafana shirts and also flying the flags from their cars.

"It's a complete difference from what we are seeing in Gauteng and other provinces," he said, adding that in Johannesburg cars sporting the national flag far outnumbered those that did not.

"We expect that spirit to reach Cape Town soon. The expectation is that all South Africans should show their excitement about the World Cup."

Cape Town will host nine SWC matches but no international football team will be based in the Mother City for the June 11 to July 11 tournament.
