CT hits million SWC fan mark

Cape Town - Cape Town's official soccer World Cup facilities have hosted over a million visits since the start of the tournament, the city said on Tuesday.

The figures were based on cumulative attendance at the city's four fan jols, the Fan Fest on the Grand Parade, the fan walk, and the Cape Town Stadium.

"Based on (these figures), it is projected that approximately 1.7 million people will visit the facilities by the end of the tournament on 11 July," the city's communications department said in a statement.

"This has exceeded all the city's expectations, as the original projected attendance figure on which planning was based was one million visitors."

The one million mark was reached on Monday afternoon when fans congregated on the Grand Parade to watch the round of 16 match between the Netherlands and Slovakia.

All the facilities had proved very popular, the city said.

More than 235 100 people had walked along the 2.4km fan walk on the five Cape Town match days, some with, and others without tickets just for the experience.

A total of 317 798 spectators had attended matches at the stadium.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
