Cape Town – The Mother City’s tourism website called on eager Soccer World Cup fans to avoid the official FIFA Fan Fest area on the Grand Parade on Thursday as the area was filled to capacity.
The website implored enthusiastic fans to go to Adderley Street, where giant television screens had been erected.
Earlier a spokesperson for the city, Kylie Hatton, confirmed that one person had been injured while fans were pushing to gain entrance.
The Fan Fest area can accommodate 17 000 people.
The reported injuries were apparently all minor.
Additional law enforcement officers had been summoned to the area in front of the historic Town Hall and helicopters could be heard circling overhead.
An eyewitness told News24 that people at the Darling Street entrance had been pushing against the barriers, trying to gain entrance.
Motorists on the city’s surrounding highways were also asked via new electronic boards to stay away from the CBD because of congestion.
