Johannesburg – Brazil expects to host the "best ever" World Cup in 2014, Brazilian football legend Romario said on Thursday.

"We expect to hold the best World Cup ever and God willing, we will do just that," he told reporters at Soccer City.

Romario, a retired striker, was the player of the tournament at the 1994 World Cup.

He believed the 2010 World Cup, the first on African soil, was "very successful" even though he had been in the country only a short while.

He hoped the Brazilian national side would win the trophy in 2014.

"I'm sure that the ambience in Brazil will be one of the best... I am hoping that in football, we can become the champions. That is the most important part," he said via a translator.

Romario would not name his favourite to win the World Cup in South Africa, saying it would be "complicated" to choose the better of the Netherlands and Spain.

"My heart is split right now, but for me these are the two teams that best represent football, technically speaking."

Romario forms part of a Brazilian delegation in the country to formally kick-off preparations for the 2014 World Cup.

He was besieged by reporters after the briefing, not for information, though, but for autographs.
