Cape Town – With Bafana Bafana out of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, fans around the country have been adopting other teams.
A number of Capetonians said on Wednesday that they would be supporting an African team or one of the South American favourites.
Clive Prinsloo, a financial planner from Rondebosch East said: "I am a true African supporter."
He said Ghana had taken the initiative of running training schools and were showing that the system was working for them.
"It's good see some young blood on the field and they have brought youngsters through. I will be supporting Ghana and no other team."
Supporting African teams
Lemise Abrahams, a foreign exchange consultant from Cape Town, felt the same.
"I will first be supporting all the other African teams because we are part of Africa," she said.
Her second choice would be Brazil. "I will then be supporting Brazil because they play good soccer, they have such a flair with the ball."
Ivan Botha, a restaurant manager from Durbanville, said he was supporting Ghana because "they are the dark horse of the World Cup and they are awesome".
Godwin Zender, a waiter from Cape Town said he was a Bafana supporter, "but for the moment I'm supporting Ghana". They were one of the African countries still in the World Cup.
Argentina and Brazil
Argentina and Brazil were also been named as favourites among Bafana Bafana supporters.
James Qeqe, a hotel employee from Alice in the Eastern Cape, said he was supporting Argentina now because they were playing good football.
"I'm going to support Argentina, Maradona, because I'm a fan of his," said Phyllis Kilifele, from Langa, who is unemployed.
"I'm supporting Brazil now because in 2002 I was in London and they won the World Cup. It was the first time that I had ever watched soccer and the fans were just fantastic," said Lelani Boshoff, a personal assistant from Durbanville.
There was also support for the European teams.
Behind Portugal
Carla van der Merwe, a communications officer from Plattekloof said her family came from Portugal so she was "100% behind the Portuguese soccer team" now that Bafana Bafana was out.
"The Portuguese have style, they are extraordinary and when they have that ball, nothing can stop them. Viva Portugal."
Malika Fagodien, a manager at a parking company in Cape Town said he had supported Bafana because he supported his country, but was actually a Germany supporter, "always have been".
"I thought Bafana were brilliant, but now I supposed I'll be supporting England since my boss is British," said Janine Moir, a dental assistant from Cape Town.
