ANCYL want Mokoena axed

Johannesburg – The ANC Youth League criticised Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena on Monday, saying he sometimes made "costly mistakes" which the team could not afford.

"The coach and tactical team should honestly assess the captain's readiness for the soccer match against France on Tuesday," spokesperson Floyd Shivambu said.

"We believe that the captain of Bafana Bafana, Aaron Mokoena, sometimes makes costly mistakes, which the team and the country cannot afford in a do-or-die soccer encounter."

But the ANCYL believed Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira was "excellent".

Shivambu urged all South Africans to continue supporting the team, which faces France on Tuesday in the soccer World Cup tournament.

South Africa has played two matches, drawing 1-1 against Mexico and losing 0-3 to Uruguay.

"Bafana Bafana needs the continued support by all South Africans, when they are not winning, because supporting the team only when they win is not real support," Shivambu said.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
