Cape Town - With just minutes to go until the kick-off of Bafana Bafana's crunch match, thousands of people had flocked to the Fan Fest on Cape Town’s Grand Parade.
Blowing on vuvuzelas, they jived to the beat of DJs and live acts as they waited for the South African team’s moment of destiny.
"I think they will put in everything. This is their last chance," said Wayne Hendricks, of Caledon, who was outfitted in a Bafana shirt and a violent red wig.
"If they don't win, at least we've played the game. Win or lose, we're behind the boys 24/7."
Rowayda Adams, from Bo-Kaap, said she was hoping for a win.
"When the game is on we'll see," she said. "They must just make the best of it, because we're not going to have the World Cup (tournament) again."
Nine-year-old Ryan Demers, from Retreat, was convinced Bafana were going to win, five nil. Why such a big margin?
"Because Teko Modise plays crap," he said. "Simphiwe Tshabalala’s going to score everything."
Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato, addressing journalists in the media centre next to the Fan Fest, believed Bafana could win if they "tackle their hearts out".
If they put on the same display of determination they had against Mexico, there was no reason why they should not humble France.
Deputy mayor Ian Nielson said the city had spent R64m on its World Cup fan parks and the fan walk from the city centre to its 2010 stadium in Green Point.
